Re: talk to me about BGA rework inspection stations
Thanks
I should have updated this thread anyways. I ended up sticking with my X-Tronic 5040 station for now but we did order the BGA300 inspection scope from SMT Tools. We also got the upgraded .5mm prism, software and reballing kit. That should be coming in this week. I've ran through a couple tests using the 5040 and it should do the job. I can keep the heat levels consistent to within +/-5 C.
I'm really excited to do a live run on this. Its going to be pretty interesting....

Re: PICS! I need some help with one hole....
Did another today, same thing.
The old solder just won't melt through the hole. So I finally got mad and left it on the IR preheat station for 30 minutes set to 350C. I felt like I was baking cookies.
But the solder finally melted through. Now to put the thing back together and make sure I didn't melt anything I wasn't supposed to.

Re: PICS! I need some help with one hole....
Thanks!
That makes perfect sense. I even resorted to Chip Quik alloy to try to keep the solder wet but it wasn't enough.
I do have an IR preheat station, I'll give that a try on the next one I do. Leave the old solder in, heat it up to 350, and remove the old tab. I don't have enough hands to use 2 irons at once....how do you guys do that stuff?...

PICS! I need some help with one hole....
There is one hole on one board that I work on that always give me trouble. These are through-hole solders with a tab instead of a post. All the other ones I do are fine but this one hole always ends up trashed.
Here are some pics of the board and the problem hole. The purple arrow points to the other hole on the board that always turns out fine.
I use the same method on both: lots of flux. Chisel tip heated to 350C. Solder wick all the solder that I can from both sides, then pull the tabs out. Every time the one hole is fine while the...

Re: Looking for recommendations on IR rework station
Here's the whole story of what happened with me and Xtronic:
I ordered the 4040 station and it had a bad iron. Wouldn't heat up hardly at all. I emailed them and received a call back the same day. They shipped me out a new iron and I had it in 2 days.
But the iron still wasn't heating up all the way. So I emailed them again, pretty upset. The owner of the company called me within a half hour of me hitting send. He asked me what he could do to make it right. Offered me a refund, a...

talk to me about BGA rework inspection stations
Here's my story:
I repair credit card terminals and I started playing around with upgrading the memory on a couple boards. I had never dealt with BGA chips before, so I was lost when I found that the chips I need to replace are BGA.
Now I've done enough research to know what they are. I'm not sure on how the equipment works though. I know I need the endoscope vs xray. I know I don't need anything huge since the boards I work on are small (4" x 9"). But what do I need to be looking for?
I already have an IR station and a hot air station. Can I just...

Re: Looking for recommendations on IR rework station
I use the X-Tronic 5040 everyday at work and it works great. It's a 70 watt iron, IR preheat and hot air station all in one. I have zero complaints.
Best part is the company is located in the US, so their customer service is beyond awesome. I had a problem with a unit so I sent them a pissed off email. I had the owner of the company calling me within a half hour to make things right.
Check out the 5040. Its a great machine.

Re: HP 742C with 10 bad caps
Once again, I am a simpleton about this kind of stuff. Could someone please link me to a specific page and tell me exactly which caps to order? I understand that I will need a 60+ watt iron, a scraper and a sucker. The caps are what I am unsure of.

Re: HP 742C with 10 bad caps
Oh right. Good job topcat!
I was hoping someone could link me to what I need to order. I have searched all over trying to find the right caps and all I can figure out is that the are 1500u, 6.3v.
I am a noob to this kind of thing, any help would be appreciated....

HP 742C with 10 bad caps
Hello all. I have an HP 742c desktop that has 10 bad caps. I have never replaced caps, but am OK with soldering. My question is which caps should I get? The caps are all 1500u 6.3V with 105c temp.
