  • Re: Vertical Bars - Tab or T-Con?

Hmmm. Maybe I've got a chance to resurrect the beast. I noticed a identical unit with a failed panel on Craigslist but dont know if it's still available. If I can get my grubby paws on it for cheap, maybe it's worth a shot.

Do you believe the T-con failure could cause the power board to buzz?...

Budm - I believe your spot on. You have now showed me the light but dont wanna look at it! I'm starting to face reality that the panel is toast.

Yes, the G4 Power Board is making a low buzzing sound along with the higher buzzing sound from the T-con.

The document you provided explains the IC issue better than the other document I read by Sony.

Thanks for your support and time. Now let me find an LCD that I can repair as this one has me beat.

    Cheers!...

Will pickup some contact cleaner. Thanks.

Now is it normal for the T-con board to buzz? It's coming from the right side of the board when facing the LCD....

Yes, I reseated the two ribbon cables (twice) on the T-con but did not clean them. The T-con board is T400HW01 V3 40T02-C04.

Tom66. Glad I did not try to move the ribbon cables so thanks for the heads up. I'm attempting to confirm the issue before investing in something that could be beyond economical repair.

What is typically used to clean the contacts on the T-con ribbon cables?...

Hmmm. Is it possible to slide the t-con board over and feed the right ribbon onto the opposite (left) panel feed? Would I only see half of the display or would it be scrambled?

Tom66. Yes, it does have the 120Hz motion flow but it's turned off. Is there a reasonable approach to confirm it's the t-con board without purchasing a replacement?

  • Re: Vertical Bars - Tab or T-Con?

Now I'm getting somewhere. If I choose to "freeze" the picture, the abnormal dark area and discolored vertical bar displays on the right but a picture in picture appears on the bottom left. This PIP continues to display the current program without any display abnormalities. This means the system is rendering the video properly but only on the left.

Does this indicate a failed panel on the right?...

Tom66. Thanks for the clarification on the t-con not affecting the Ethernet port. Would like to clarify my findings. The right half of the screen is darker than the left. There is a lighter colored bar (reddish/yellowish) which is 3" in width that runs vertically from top to bottom that displays on top of this darker area. This colored bar appears only when there is a lighter color behind it which is shown in the picture attachments.

Could the T-con board also cause issues with the Ethernet? Possibly the Ethernet failed years ago but I never knew because it was not being used. I'll take a close look at the t-con board for obvious failures. Will report back with my findings.

Update. Noticed the Ethernet jack on the unit is not functional. Could this point to the main board that is causing the vertical bar and darker screen on the right side? Checked the tabs and they visually appeared to be fine.

  • Vertical Bars - Tab or T-Con?

Have a Sony LCD Model KDL-46Z4100 with approximately 2 abnormal 3 inch vertical bars around right of center. You'll also see the screen to the right of these vertical bars are darker than the left side of the LCD. The unit is about 5 years old and no issue since purchased new. Bars stay on 24X7 without any changes due to temperature or duration of using the TV. Noticed these bars are only visible if the screen has a lighter background and are completely unnoticeable when background is black or certain darker colors. Basic service diagnostics show good with about 4,000 hrs on unit. I have not seen...

  • Re: New Members - please post your introductions here

Ok so here I am. My name is Scooter (oops, I mean Mark) and I'm from California. I'm an Aircraft Mechanic (but not working as one) as I'm currently fixing my TV and everything else that breaks. Anyway, I'm also PC repair literate and recently replaced the bad caps on my 40" Samsung. Good deal as it only cost $10 to fix. The cheapest LCD I'll probably get my grubby paws on. Anyway, I'll start posting my current issue on a 46" Sony in a bit but first got to grab my favorite tool. Honey, where is my hammer!
