• GE Wall Oven, Dim display capacitor repair

My GE Profile dual wall oven display had become dim over time, to the point where you could barely read the display by cupping your hands around it. Some googling suggested bad caps could be the issue, so I decided to recap the control board. The display is now bright and back to normal. Here's the summary of my repair.

Turn off power to the oven.
Remove the control panel. Take LOTS of pictures of the wiring before you start unplugging wires from the control panel.
Measure all the capacitors, put oven back together.
Order caps and wait.
Do the full repair. Reinstall carefully.
...

  • Re: All replacement capacitors in iMac G5 PSU burned up

I've been following this thread for a while, since I have a 614-0293 that doesn't work. It had a few bulging caps and a toasty coil. I acquired a recap kit as well as the coil discovered in this thread. (Nichicons from Mouser and the coil from digikey).

Anyways, I recapped it & replaced the burnt coil. Shorted the power-on wire. All the voltages checked-out okay. I installed it in my iMac, and it wouldn't turn on. The power light blinked for a moment, but no boot sound. I reinstalled my known-good PSU, and...

I've always thought of Jetway as a very low-quality maker. Should I reconsider that opinion?...

  • Re: Which of these two caps would you use?

I finished up the job yesterday, and its all assembled and working just fine. I used the HNs around the slots to maintain future compatibility, since I will probably sell this machine at some point and don't want any future owner to have an unplanned headache. I've attached two pics, one with the original 15mm G-Luxons, and one with my repair. Hopefully the pics are clear enough. And, yes, HZs and HNs are total overkill for this board, but if you're gonna do it, do it right!!! Oh yeah, and the date code on the HNs was 0833, so they're definitely...

  • Which of these two caps would you use?

I'm recapping a Shuttle XPC motherboard, and stumbled across a "which way would you do it" question.

Near the PCI/AGP slots there are several caps. What's in there now are a G-Luxon LZ 1000 uF 10V 8x15 cap. There are 3 caps on the "business" side of the slots, 1 3cm out on the PCI, and two behind the PCI slot (on the non-business side of the card).

I have two different caps I can put in the three trouble spots:
Nichicon HZ 1000/10 in an 8x20
Nichicon HN 820/6.3 in an 8x11.5

The 20mm height of the HZ will stick up above...

  • Re: Antec TruePower 430 recap need help

I just recapped a True380S, which is probably very similar.

For the Four 3300 uF 10V 10x32mm caps I used Nichicon HZ 3300 uF 6.3V 10x25. My choice was to drop the voltage to 6.3V and keep the 10mm diameter so it would fit.

For the two 2200 uF 16V 10x32mm caps, I couldn't drop the voltage. So I used two Nichicon HZ 1800 uF 16V 10x25mm caps. I had to drop the capacitance to 1800 uF in order to keep the size and voltage.

The HZ is a low-ESR cap, but only with a rated endurance of 2000 hrs @ 105C. Perhaps...

  • Recapped: PC Power & Cooling, it had Fuhjyyus!

To be fair, this is a Silencer 275ATX which was probably bought in 2000 or 2001 or thereabouts (I really don't remember). However, I pulled it apart to check the status of the caps, and was surprised to find a bulging YEC, as well as several Fuhjyyus. I remember paying a huge premium for it when I bought it. I contacted PCP&C, and they were not able to provide any information to help me with the recap. I think think they make a great power supply, but was disappointed to see these in there.

    Here's what I pulled out:
    C21 4700 10 Fuhjyyu TMR 13x36
    C29 4700 10 Fuhjyyu...

  • Re: Bad Antec experience, need a new PSU

If the Antec specs meets your needs, why not just recap it and keep using it? Its a lot cheaper than buying a whole new power supply, and with decent caps in it its a pretty good unit. I just recapped a True380S (from a Sonata case), and its working fine again.

  • Re: HP 742C with 10 bad caps

I've done several boards, so I'm by no means an expert compared to many folks around here.

Here's a few tidbits of advice:
If you don't have a desoldering tool, this is the best $11 you'll ever spend:
    http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062731

You might as well replace everything on the board that has a vent on it, not just those that are leaking. You'll have it torn all apart.

If you don't want to order from Topcat (and there's no reason not to, I've swapped a few...

  • Best cap series for power supplies?

This post in the FAQ does a very good job outlining the best caps for a motherboard recap across various brands:
    https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=2280

However, are there different caps that are betting suited for a power supply? Or, can that same list be transferred to a power supply recap? I have typically been using Nichicon HZ and HN, since they are available through Mouser in a variety of sizes. Are they the best choice for recapping a power supply, though?

I noticed that Nichicon lists PJ, PS, and TS for switching power supplies:...

  • Fixed: Shuttle XPC Power Supply by ACHME

A family member was having problems with a Shuttle SK43G computer that I built for them a few years ago. They were experiencing occasional instabilities, as well as an intermittent delay or pause between pressing the power button and having the computer turn on. It was kinda freaky pressing the power button and having it turn on 5 minutes later!

Anyways, all the caps on the motherboard looked fine, even though not being the best of brands. I remember some OSTs on the mobo. The problem turned out to be in the power supply. Most of the caps in there were bulging and leaking. Unfortunately,...
