• Re: Auxiliary Power Supply question

What you need to do is load the 5V side. The 12V side will have significant load with a number of drives, but the electronics don't take much in the way of 5V - try to get the total load on the 5V side up to 5 Amps or so - better to get it up to 20% of rated if possible.

The big Florida roaches have a lot of water in them - they explode nicely. But do it in someone else's microwave, so you don't have to clean up after...

re. the fake "WriteBack" cache chips...

I don't know how long ago those fake cache chips were floating around - around the time of the 486/AMD k5/k6 CPU. Found a number of cheap mobos that had them back then (another clue was that they were soldered in - no respectable outfit soldered cache in those days, all socketed) - The BIOS was hard-wired to report 256kB L2 cache too, but if you tested with Cachechk, it would come back bad. Shows how dumb the crooks were, couldn't even be bothered to counterfeit...

I was thinikng you could bolt a couple of Codegen S101s together - less than $300. shipped from Newegg or Dealsonic.

• Re: and a list of known junk power supplies

Tiger Direct has had a sleazy rep from way back. Recently had to be forced under court order to pay up on numerous outstanding rebates.
. Foisting the X-Connect onto an unsuspecting public certainly didn't polish their rep up any...
. I was under the impression that the X-C was OEM by Powmax for awhile myself, but it turned out to be Youngyear instead. Powmax nee Leadman was one of the better PSU brands way back in the day of the AT to ATX transition era, how far the great often fall... As far as Youngyear, I've not seen...

• Re: Tagan to deliver 900w and 1100w PSUs

Acer PC systems is a completely separate entity from the AOpen division even though they share the Acer corporate umbrella. Acer Systems OEMs their PSUs from numerous suppliers.
. AOpen sells components and barebones chassis to system integrators, VARs and us hobbyists. They really try to keep the quality of their components well above average. AOpen cases, PSUs, optical drives and mobos have been very reliable for me over the years.

The Acer retail channel (now Benq) stuff has not fared nearly so well here.

The original Ultra X-Connect. Unsafe - parts may blow up when overloaded rather than shut itself down like it's supposed to. Most of the modular cables don't latch to the PSU (just friction fit) so there is a danger of loosening/falling out from thermal cycling. RMA terms are "interesting". Packaged by a member of the marketing group in which Tiger Direct is a key player - 'nuff said.

BTW, L&C hides under lots of brands. Look for LCA, LCB etc. as part of the model number.

Note to admin: Kindly punt the 10-minute edit limit. I often spend 10 minutes tweaking JUST ONE SENTENCE of my posts...

The Tagan 900/1100s are Topower variants.

Lunacy! AOpen branded PSUs have always been Fortron not Topower. The 700 Watter that AOpen had a brief exclusive on is now out under the Fortron brand : Fortron Epsilon 700. Here is the AOpen version: AO 700W. Enermax (of which MaxWorld, Tagan and ePower, is a division) uses a variety of OEMs for their PSUs Channel Well and Topower among them.
