Hey there guys, it's been a while since I've picked up another tv project, so It's time to consult the experts yet again.
By the way, this forum has been a huge help to me in the past year. I really appreciate all the great advice & knowhow everyone has shared. Y'all rock!
Today, I found a Sony Brava KDL 40S4100 (2008) on craigslist. The guy took great care of the tv, almost perfect cosmetic condition with the stickers still on. Original remote.
The problem:

Re: Sylvania lc370ss9 turns on for 10 sec. then to standby mode-my fix and pics
Again, SAME exact problem. I was killing myself trying to find out what was wrong with this damn tv. No bad capacitors, no bad fuses. I went back to it today after a week to see if I might have missed something, & moved the wires. It was one of those 'duh!' moments. I did the same fix with electrical tape & it works fine! The first time I haven't had to solder somethingCame back here to see if I could help someone with the same problem. You made my day! Lol. Here's another pic anyw...

Re: Trouble getting to capacitors. Magnavox 50mf231D/37
Dude, at this point, I think you can do a J. This Turdbucket has been the biggestI've worked on so far. I'm so glad it worked. It always comes down to the moment of truth.
What the world has taught me so far:
No matter how much you know, you can always learn more.
Stupid shit might surprise and enlighten you some of those times.
Some people talk to hear their own farts.
-love you guys!

Re: Trouble getting to capacitors. Magnavox 50mf231D/37
Hey LLLlllou, thanks for your help. I appreciate constructive criticism and help because I am new at this. It's not something I went to school for, it's a skill I'm trying to pick up on with input from those who are much better than I am at it. You might have missed the part where I did replace all the bad caps with rubycons, not radio shack. Though to get the job done, I was thinking about it. I am not a pro tech, nor am I trying to pretend like I am one here. Just a girl trying to fix a few tvs on the side, and learn. By...

Re: Trouble getting to capacitors. Magnavox 50mf231D/37
All the caps? All of them? (A year later, there's me... trying to hang myself with half used soldering braid that never seems to work)
Quite frankly, I'd rather spend an entire day with a jehova's witness. Regarding Crap Shack: Well yes, I was thinking about it.... Considering this tv is A: currently not working, and B: I'm not trying to have it in my house for 7 years, I'm selling it once I do get it working. I have replaced the caps that typically go bad in the unit with rubycons, and bought the same brand...

Re: Trouble getting to capacitors. Magnavox 50mf231D/37
Damn, I got all the caps out without too much trouble. I NEED one of those solder sucker things. Never used a desoldering braid before, but gave it a shot this time. Again, never before has the solder gone back in on me and closed the hole to where I can't fix it! I think this tv is just screwing with me, for real. Well, now I've got a few holes that are closed with solder, and the braid (for whatever reason) is giving me nothing but a headache. It was easier my way, wiggling the caps out while heating the solder. I should...

Re: Trouble getting to capacitors. Magnavox 50mf231D/37
Thanks for your help. And LTank, It's good to know you've changed these guys before & it didn't involve ripping any unnecessary parts out. That's the feedback I was hoping to hear.
I'll get to removing them today & finding out what else I need to order. Or maybe, just maybe, Radio Shack will have the caps I need so I can get them today.

Going through my own Magnavox nightmare at the moment. Same model only a 50 inch. I think elves made these.

Trouble getting to capacitors. Magnavox 50mf231D/37
My project of the week. A 50 inch Magnavox with the power supply problem. I'm a novice, but I'm starting to really like TV repair. Learn something new about it every day. I've fixed a handful of TVs with the same issue, and I've never run into this problem. 3 of the capacitors I need to replace are in a really tough spot!
Of course the first thing I'm thinking is 'I've got to fanagel the new cap into a barely big enough space & bend the external wires 'just so' and try to move around things'. Then, I remembered I'm new at this, and there's probably a good way to do it that...

Re: The proper way to discharge electricity from a flat screen before working on it.
I've never discharged capacitors before, and searching the Internet hasn't really recovered much in the way of tutorials with visuals. I'm not brave enough to do the screwdriver method. It doesn't sound like a safe move for a novice like myself! But I'll get one of those resistors and give it a shot. Just so I have this straight, between the advice on badcaps & other info I've dug up.... Start to finish.
Tv is unplugged of course... I want to take the DM board out & flip it...

Re: The proper way to discharge electricity from a flat screen before working on it.
I hear ya. iPads aren't the best for typing either! So, I have one more question for you then, because I want to learn... What would you do in the case of a plasma tv?
I got into this because my old boss was giving away all the 37" flat screens in the bar that were having trouble turning on. I said "Sure, I'll take one!" I dig projects. I got one, and so did my friend Mike, who can barely work a stove. I fixed both of those & then bought and flipped another. What...

Thanks. I've looked at some other flat screen repair forums that say things to the contrary. It's just not something I want to dick around with if there's a chance that it can shock you!...

The proper way to discharge electricity from a flat screen before working on it.
Hi guys, I've fixed a few TVs already with the power supply problem by taking the DM board out and replacing the capacitors. However, the TVs I've worked on have all been sitting for over a month, & discharging the electricity wasn't such an issue. I found another good buy, a 50" mangavox flat screen for $75 with the same issue, but since I don't know when it was turned on last (and I'm not the kind of person who enjoys sadistic high voltage shocks)... I was hoping someone in this forum could give me a tried & true method of discharging any dangerous voltage from the set. Any simple...

Re: New Members - please post your introductions here
New to the forum! I recently started fixing a few tvs on the side, and I have a pretty decent success rate for being a self taught girl! Anyway, I joined to expand what knowledge I already have, & read up on troubleshooting techniques.
