Re: Sony KDL-46Z4100 another TCON problem?
Still unresolved. I confess I haven't had much time to spend on it with travels and other time constraints. I did look at it again yesterday and have concluded that testing continuity on the cable is a no go for me. The wires and terminals in the connectors are WAY to small for me to check with my VOM probes. And some of the terminals are almost hidden in the connectors.
So where do I go from here? I don't know. If the experts here have any other ideas I'd love to hear them. I could make good use of the TV if I could fix...

Re: Sony KDL-46Z4100 another TCON problem?
Let me clarify what I've done. I started with the colored vertical stripes as shown in my original post. I purchased a used replacement TCON board and after installing it, found that the vertical stripes were no longer present, but the TV would shut itself off and display 14 blinks of a light on the front panel. After reading the posts from Bud last night, I checked continuity of the fuses on both the old an replacement TCON boards, and both showed nearly 0 ohm resistance. I also checked voltage at both ends of each fuse on the TCON board...

No, the colored vertical stripes are gone. But the TV won't stay on. It shuts itself off after about 30 seconds and the red light on the front panel blinks 14 times repeatedly. It doesn't stay on long enough to hook up a source and test for an appropriate picture.

Re: Sony KDL-46Z4100 another TCON problem?
I suppose this means that there is no obvious problem with the TCON board? By the way, I noted that if I power the set on with the LVDS cable disconnected from the TCON board, it does not go into the 14 blink failure mode. Stays on, but obviously, with no picture.

Re: Sony KDL-46Z4100 another TCON problem?
Yes on both counts and as reported, the resistances were both below 1 ohm, essentially zero. And I had 12V at each end of both fuses with power on.

Re: Sony KDL-46Z4100 another TCON problem?
I tested resistance by probing the two ends of the fuse with the two probes of the VOM. I tested voltage by holding the negative probe from the VOM to a chassis screw and the positive probe to each end of each fuse. I hope that's correct......they are kind of tiny.

And yes, less than 1 ohm resistance across both fuses.

12V DC at all both ends of both fuses.

OK, thanks. I'll check and report back.

I see now that you are right; no need for another picture. F100, 4A/72V near LVDS connector and F101, same fuse on left. I should check them both?
Thanks,
Chuck

Sorry, I'm having trouble uploading the pictures. I'll keep trying....

Re: Sony KDL-46Z4100 another TCON problem?
Thanks Bud. Sorry for the rookie question, but can you tell me where to find that fuse? I don't see any fuses on the T-CON board or on the board with all the inputs and outputs that the TCON is connected to. I have no schematic, etc. :-(

Hmmm......sounds like I got a bad TCON board from China???? Do you think its worth trying another board?
Thanks,
Chuck...

Re: Sony KDL-46Z4100 another TCON problem?
Progress report: no joy so far!
I received the board and carefully installed it. Plugged it in, the set powered on and my first observation is there are no longer any colored vertical bars on the screen. Good news, I thought. BUT, even though I got sound through the speakers from my DTV box, there was no picture. As I was thinking about this, the TV turned itself off and the status light blinked red 14 times repeatedly until I unplugged it. Turned it on again and had the same problem. So, opened it up again and did two things....

Re: Sony KDL-46Z4100 another TCON problem?
Hi Robb,
I have ordered a used T-Con board from a company in China that was recommended by another forum member. The board is in route to me now and I expect to receive it in a week or so. Total cost was $113 including shipping. Here's a link to their site http://www.wisiny.com/1-878-182-11-sony-a-1564-648-a-bt3-board-version-1
Good luck and keep us posted on your progress. Isn't it frustrating to have to deal with...

Re: Sony KDL-46Z4100 another TCON problem?
Yeah, I bought a cheap 50" Toshiba to tide me over. I've found a couple of T-Cons for a bit less so will probably bite the bullet soon. When I do I'll post the results.
Thanks for your observations!
Chuck

Re: Sony KDL46z4100 red hazy picture
Congrats! Wish I could find a reasonably priced T-Con for my set that might get it going again. Where did you order from? Perhaps I can see if they have one for my TV.
Thanks,
Chuck

Re: Sony KDL46z4100 red hazy picture
Here you go; the front of the T-Con board. I didn't take the thermal pads off because they seem quite fragile. But if I need to, let me know and I will. If you need to see the back of the board, let me know.
Thanks!
Chuck...

Are there similar test points on this board?...
