Re: Dell GX-260 motherboard repair... cap appropriateness question.
Drum Roll please!....
....
SUCCESS! I have restored my GX260 (11 caps this time, whew!).
I was very nervous about this one guys because once I started desoldering I notice that 3 of these were located where there were very fine embossed circuitry all around the post hole. I was so afraid I would spill solder on it or melt the protective cover and short them out. I did discolor two of them mildly but it appears I didn't fry it as the computer BOOTED UP!!!
I've checked BIOS and it seems...

Re: Dell GX-260 motherboard repair... cap appropriateness question.
Ok, well I'm just going to order the same brand, model as the original since they are still available. I just hope they made new runs of these caps without the bad formula or I'll be throwing out this motherboard in a couple of years.
I really didn't expect to be able to find the original parts so thanks for everyone's input and help!

Re: Dell GX-260 motherboard repair... cap appropriateness question.
Ok, so these are trash then? I was afraid of that. I wish I had come here before I ordered those last year (I had no clue at the time).
I have 10 of these on hand but the specs look outta whack to me on these too...
Nichicon 2200uf 6.3v HZ-series
Code: H1127
Size: 10x20
impedance: 7 (mOhms)
Rated Ripple: 3770 (mArms)
Plus I need 11 and I only have 10 of these.
Oracle, the only problem with those is these are in a tight line around a CPU so I don't think...Last edited by Stevevil; 10-13-2013, 12:37 PM.

Dell GX-260 motherboard repair... cap appropriateness question.
Hi again gang! Last time I posted here I was working on my IZ3D monitor (I'm using it now to write this, 3 months later!) Thanks for those who helped me choose correct components.
This time I'm about to recap ELEVEN bad nichicon caps on my old firewall box. I had to retire this SFF firewall box over 2 years ago because it wouldn't start 19/20 times I tried. Opened her up and whoa, lots of swollen caps.
I found a recap kit on the CapKing website last year, but I'm just now getting around to pulling the mobo and looking at what I ordered. I've had good luck with their kits...

Re: Noob needs help choosing replacement caps (experts please help)
Replaced the caps (6 caps took me over 2 hours to remove and replace) but I was surprised how well most of my solders went. I'm writing this using the monitor now and it's working perfectly! No artifacts, no problems!
Thank you so much for your help with this project. I'm so stoked to get my IZ3D working again!
I learned quite a bit during this process and I'll be better equipped for my next repair project (maybe I'll finally fix that cap-plagued dell sx240 I've been sitting on for 2 years).

OK, whew. Thought I put that work in and messed it up.
I didn't even notice that one was 300 min. Yikes.
So you feel 1.9A is close enough to the original ripple of 1.75 to not matter, I guess.

Petes CA, you've got a ton of posts, do you also agree with my final choices (going with the 2nd on the cap with two links) and the replacement P4 helped me find?
Man, I'll be so excited to get these ordered.
And why does that one say Automotive? No one has told me what...Last edited by Stevevil; 08-06-2013, 07:48 PM.

Re: Noob needs help choosing replacement caps (experts please help)
um... I'm not sure but to recapitulate what I'm hearing, my choice of general purpose (regardless of the close specs) are the wrong choice for this type of circuit? It's definitely a monitor power supply. I searched for about 2 hours last night on various sites to find those listed, I'm not sure where I can find closely matching caps that aren't GP (the only other type I saw listed were "automotive" and like I asked above, I don't know what that means unless it's rated for 12v DC.)
At this point...

Here's what I've picked out for replacements. Can someone knowledgeable please check my specs and see if I'm going to encounter any problems with my choices? Pretty please.

Re: Noob needs help choosing replacement caps (experts please help)
I'm not sure I understand your answer completely (or maybe I didn't explain enough).
The capacitor on the board is marked 10v with the markings I specified and has the 10x20 dimensions (I measured them with a metal mm ruler) but the pdf that lists all the Capxon KF series only show the two I listed which neither match the dimensions of the actual 10v capacitor on the board. Either the document I'm referencing is out of date or there's something missing in the document (maybe a discontinued...

Re: Noob needs help choosing replacement caps (experts please help)
Ok, I went back in the Capxon KF pdf and realized that there was voltage listed up top (I had tried to match using uF and size alone previously). Felt a little silly for not noticing this before.
Here's the actual ratings (according to the Capxon KF manual)...
Black 100uf 25v KF series 105c P710 vent 11mm x 6.3mm
Cap Size Ripple Impedance
100uf 6.3x11 370 0.35
Green 2200uf 10v KF series 105c P722 vent 20mm x 13mm

Re: Noob needs help choosing replacement caps (experts please help)
I see. I definitely don't want to do this repair twice. Especially after reading the BC FAQ talking about damaging the board by pulling off/on caps multiple times. I want to get it right the first time. I'll count all the capxons when I get home and see what we're talking about here. I may ask for additional help locating the correct caps for the others once I get their specs (please be patient with me, as although I don't know much about capacitors, I swear I'm not a dummy... so I'll learn this stuff pretty quickly...

Re: Noob needs help choosing replacement caps (experts please help)
Thank you both for your help. If I understand your responses correctly I gather the "ripple" is how much variance in volt/amp the cap can tolerate? And that's why it's ok to go higher but not lower?
I guess Impedance would be the cap's resistance, also the reason it is ok to go lower but not higher?
Also, I read on another site these caps are low ESR, are the replacements you guys suggested? (or does it matter?)
Also, I've heard people talking about switching and non-switching...

Noob needs help choosing replacement caps (experts please help)
Hi everyone, I'm new and I've decided to repair my IZ3d 22" monitor. It was making high pitched noises when running last time I plugged her in over 2 years ago and it had been getting progressively worst. I knew I had probably blown caps or nearly (although it was still working when I retired it).
I've disassembled the monitor and identified the bad caps in question...
<drum roll>
Capxon
Yea.
So help me please. Here's the specs of what I'm replacing but I have no idea what to replace them with (since I sure don't want more Capxon)....
