  • Re: Wife's PC killed by virus

He likely downloaded a compromised app, but that would be a user issue not a Linux one and would apply equally to any operating system irrespective of how secure it is.

You can put up all the fences you like but if someone leaves the front door open.....

  • Re: Viewsonic Vp201b: Flickery screen

OK, well I check the cable but that seems sound and same problem still so at the moment I'm still leaning towards something being up with the logic board, which is a colossal pain as the capacitors on the main board are all little surface mount jobs and I was hoping not to have to go near them.

Anybody got a suggestion as to whereabouts on the mainboard might be a good place to start looking?

Both of which still require physical access to the device. If someone has gained physical access to your hardware then you've already been compromised so while interesting this isn't really that much of a big deal....

  • Viewsonic Vp201b: Flickery screen

    Morning all,

So I've acquired an old Vp201b that's not quite working properly, it has a tendency to intermittently flicker like it's losing vertical sync for a bit. Other times it's fine for a while. Aside from that tho it seems to work fine when it is working, no dead pixels or anything and it's got a nice resolution on it so it would be good to get it fixed if possible.

I've already dismantled it once and given it a look over and there was an obvious problem with the 450v capacitor on the PSU leaking electrolytic from one of the pins so I've replaced all the capacitors...

Aye, the only way you're going to get air bubbles between a heatsink and cpu shield is if there's a mismatch between the surfaces anyway in which case your paste isn't going to be doing a lot to help either way. So long as you put a thin layer on it should be fine, just not smear it on like toothpaste.
