  • Re: 13 Teapos on my Mainboard

'k. There's four caps that are all 5 mm diameter 22uF 25V Supacons. I've heard that this brand should be replaced no matter how tiny they are. TopCat's got a 22uF 25V Samxon in his inventory. Is it worth spending the cash to get those replaced when I send the mobo to Topcat?

All of which are 100uF, 10V. Are they enough of a failure risk to warrant replacement? If so, what should i get as replacements for them? They're 5 or 6 mm in diameter, and 7 or 8 mm tall at the most.

  • Re: is it bad to have the heatsink puching against caps?

So we know that it's bad if the heat-sink is PUSHING on the cap. What about if it's just touching or merely brushing the cap with virtually no contact at all?

  • Re: When is a board beyond economic repair?

Well I'm trying to figure out what the most precise matches are for a mainboard of mine that needs to be recapped. Might just send it to get the few MUST REPLACE NOW caps taken care of and then get the others that can wait replaced when I've got the money to pay for the more...thorough procedure. It's an nVidia nForce2 Ultra 400 board on which I plan to use an AMD Athlon XP 3200+

  • Re: When is a board beyond economic repair?

For me, some old parts have value as retrocomputing gear. A friend of mine re-capped the mobo on an old Mac SE/30 (one of the most expandable black-and-white all-in-one Macs). Replaced the PSU with a new aftermarket one that's rated for 3 times as many watts, uses a quieter cooling fan, and he's dismantled it and checked: it uses nothing but GENUINE Rubycon caps, he's recapped the mainboard (including replacing some axial 'lytics with tantalum caps, and all the others with polymer caps) and given it the royal treatment. Did a hack to increase...

  • For this capacitance and voltage...

Which of the two is a better pick? Both Nichicons, 22 uF, 25V, and I have the choice of either the KL or the VX. This is for mainboard use. Given the choice between those two nichicons, which (if either) is better than the mobo's stock Supacons? Or would the Samxon stocked by TopCat be better than either of those two? I'm trying to find the best caps of each specs that match the stock caps on the 'board, while still providing an improvement over the stock caps. The board's got good caps for all but a trio of high uF caps that are known defective Nichicons, and virtually ALL the smaller ones are...

  • Re: Empty Cap Spots

Fair enough. I'm not an _extreme_ overclocker BUT! the board is a Gigabyte GA7N400Pro2, and my CPU is an AMD Athlon XP 3200+ which clocks in at a stock 2.2 GHz. I'm considering bumping the multiplier from 11x to 12x to boost the clock-speed to 2.4 MHz and had heard that sometimes if the empty spots ARE in parallel, putting caps there can assist in reaching modestly higher clock-speeds while reducing the need to turn up V-core. Is this true? Also, one of the cap locations fouls my heat-sink. If there is an empty spot that's parallel with it which is clear of my...

    Empty Cap Spots

Which ones can have extra caps installed on them to make a board more stable or work for a longer time?

    Nichicon HZ or Rubycon MCZ?

thanks for the heads-up. Fortunately I don't really need much, just some MCZs and MBZs, plus a couple oddball cap sizes that are luckily available from BadCaps.net

  • How reputable is TheCapKing?

I ask because I see a few that are listed as Rubycons in specs out of stock at BadCaps and a few of specs that BadCaps simply doesn't carry. Wanted to make sure I can trust them to deliver on what they claim to have in stock before I buy from them. Anyone here have experience with them?

  • Re: Name that board...

For the record, Lian-Li cases are godly, imho. I've only bought one but I'm hooked. It's a PC-60USB in black (so technically a PC-61) but I got some aftermarket upgrades to it like the replacement front panel jack set, replacing the stock dual USB with a unit that has dual USB plus mic, headphone jack, and firewire 6-pin jack. Just wish I could get the aluminum bracketpiece that holds it in place replaced with one that's anodized in black, and get the mount for the foam dust filter that doesn't cover 75% of the foam's surface area with metal that blocks airflow....

    Is this safe to do?

I was wondering if it is safe to different colours of sharpie markers to mark bad caps and the good caps to replace them so you can make sure you replace it with a cap marked with a dot of the same color, to ensure they all match properly, or would the ink potentially damage the metal on the top?

  • Re: Tiny Choyos & a couple GSCs on a Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro

Alas, there are no polymer caps of the appropriate voltage and capacitance for that particular position so the only option I'm left with is longer leads, or angling it outwards slightly to minimize the increase in lead length.

  • Re: Tiny Choyos & a couple GSCs on a Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro

ok. I've identified the relevant caps. I'm doing the whole thing as a preventive measure, as the larger caps are mostly Nichicon HM(M)s which are known for being iffy so I'm going to replace them. One cap is so close to the CPU socket that the CPU heatsink fouls it. Is it safe to install the replacement with more length on the leads to orient it to lie parallel to the mobo?

  • Tiny Choyos & a couple GSCs on a Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro

The Choyos are 100uF at 10V, and measures 5 mm in diameter by 8 mm tall.
the GSC is either 2.2 uF or 22 uF at either 2.5 V or 25 V and measures 5 mm in diameter by 8 mm tall. a 2nd GSC is marked as 100 uF at 16V or 1.6V and measures 5 mm across by 11 mm tall Neither the Choyos nor the GSCs have any vents and there's one each of the 2 GSC sizes, and 11 of the Choyos (all the Choyos are identical as far as I can tell)

Are they small enough to leave well-enough alone or should I replace them?
