Doing the flash routine (after locating an HDMI wire and a laptop with the port) brought the display back to life.
I want to report a couple of things:
1) My S23A550H wasn't working in either VGA or HDMI and works great after downloading the exe, restarting the laptop and flashing via VGA (!).
