Tom, again many thanks for your guidence and training in repairing this tv. You have given me a basic understanding of Plasma tv's and what each circuit board is designed for. I bought all of my boards off ebay, so i guess i will try and sell it for the $28 that i gave for it. At least i can positively say that it's a good working board. Thanks again. Keith

Tom66, You have been 100% correct from the beginning. I received the Main Board and installed it and the picture looks great except for one thing, the picture is off center when i display the menu. I couldn't find any adjustments in the menu or the board to correct this so i removed the board to look on the back and noticed that there was an EPROM with a lable that had Z50PJ240 and a version and date code on it. I looked at the back of my old board and it had Z42PJ240. After doing some searching...

Thanks for your info. I ordered a main board yesterday morning and i should receive it by this weekend. If this dont fix it, i will order the control board. I am having too much fun to quit now. This is a summary of my first Plasma TV repair. When i first got the set it would come on and have a bright white raster just like an old CRT type tv with no antenna connection, then in about 3 seconds the picture would go dark but the audio would still be there. I had all of my voltages on the Y-sus, power supply and i thought the Z-sus as...

Thanks for the info. I dont have a scope or access to one. Is the CTRL board the one that has all of the inputs on it? If i replace this boad will i have to have the ROM flashed with different firmware?

In my past expierence with tv repair, most of my repairs were either the power supply or the rf module. Lightning would either short the diodes in the full wave bridge rectifier or kill the board that the video source came in on. I have only repaired one LCD ( replaced one open inverter transformer) and i know nothing about Plasma tvs. All my experience was with CRT type sets. And two way radios.

I will take pics this afternoon when i get home from work. Initially i had all voltages on the Y-sus but i think the Z-sus was bad. I think i killed the Y-sus by disconnecting and reconnecting the cable going from the Y-sus to the Z-sus while the tv was on. When i did i heard a snap like a power arc and one of the pins on the connector was black. The lady that gave me this set thought lightning might have came in on it and she just bought her a new on. I dont know what kind of video source she was using at that time.

Yes i did. When i first turn on the set the screen lights up with a dim white picture not a bright raster like before then it goes to a dim glow. When i press the menu button i get no image. The volume will increase and decrease. I was expecting a blue screen with no signal or something like that. The test pattern shows all images including full screen red, green, blue and white. The color bar is very vivid and correct. Do you think it could be the board with all of the inputs on it? Thanks, Keith

The tv turns off after about 20 to 30 mins when running the test pattern.

When I remove the resistor to stop the test pattern should I have some kind if picture without a video source? The menu doesn't show all I have is a slight glow. I'm sorry about the dumb questions as this is my first Plasma tv ever. Do I need some kind if video source to see even the menu?

  • Re: Zenith Plasma Z42PJ240 sound but no picture

This afternoon i installed the Y-sus and Y-buffer board that i had ordered. The picture came on with an awesome display running the test patterns. I only let it play for a few minuets. Tomorrow i will apply the power again and let it play for a longer amount of time. This had the sharpest and most vivid picture that i have ever seen on a tv. I have not checked the voltages since replacing the defective boards. How long should i let it run with the test patterns? Is is safe to leave it in the test mode for a long period of time? If...

Is the Y-Buffer the long green board to the left of the Y-SUS that is vertical to the screen? If you think the Plasma panel is ok then I will go ahead and order the Y-SUS and Y-Buffer. At this point I only have $25 in this TV and I have really enjoyed this project. Thanks to you it's been like attending training except with my own personal instructor. You have re-kindled my interest in TV repair. I'm very greatfull.

Do you think if i just replace the Y-sus board it will be salvageable? or do i need to replace the Z-sus again also. The power supply still checks out ok.

  • Re: Zenith Plasma Z42PJ240 sound but no picture

Thanks for you Help Tom66. Here are some pics. After i took the pics I removed power and disconnected the cable going to the Z-sus then re-applied the power and i heard a faint snap and the picture would not come on but still had audio. I checked the Y-sus board and found Q22and Q23 (SUS_DN) shorted. Also Q21 (SUS_DN) open. Q12 (SUS_UP) open , Q13 (SUS_UP) shorted, Q15 (Blocking) open. After looking at the pictures, do you think this is beyond repair?...

The test pattern also shows color also. I think that i read in an earlier post that if the heat sinks were hot on the Y or Z sustain boards that they should be repaired or replaced. I am comfortable with repairing them but i didn't find anything shorted. Would it be better to replace both sus boards? Could it be the buffer board?

  • Re: Zenith Plasma Z42PJ240 sound but no picture

I don't know what happened last night but this afternoon i removed the Y-sus board and checked for shorts but found none. i then removed the buffer board and didn't really know how to check it but i didn't find any shorts on it either. I re-assembled the boards and then I put the 160 ohm resistor back on the control board then plugged the power cord back in and the picture came on all white for about 3 to 5 secs then the test pattern started. After a few more seconds a large area in the middle of the picture went black but the outer...
