• Re: Onkyo tx-sr674 no sound

Ok, got her all back together and tested. All of the speaker outputs work great, as well as a bunch of the inputs. Analog and toslink work great! HDMI not so great when it start cold, once the receiver warms up, the HDMI inputs fade in. I don't have a speaker icon array on the front display as madan1 suggested. When the unit is cold, and a surround signal is applied, the front display responds with red Dolby words. If you set the display correctly, the detected format will pop up in text. No sound when cold, turning to hash, turning to garble, fading...

Ok guys, I got sound out of the unit. Relays popping like crazy after power up. The sequence I'm seeing is like the signals I saw on the "digital / dsp / microcontroller" or whatever you wanna call it board. Plug into the mains, standby light comes on. Press power button, the mains relay clicks. After a couple seconds, the 50v enable relay clicks, followed shortly by whatever speaker relays the thing decides to energize.

Previously, I did not see the speaker icons on the display. Standby light lit up when plugged into the wall outlet....

    Update on my progress:

The digital board that contains the Dolby dsp and the microcontroller on it behaves like expected. The power on signal comes out, lots of speaker relays go to +5 volts a few seconds after pressing the power button. Audio mute and protect lines end up at zero volts during the same time period. So the brain is alive but the muscles are paralyzed.

Looking at the schematic, there is a choke point here:

Besides the logic standby supply, the high current transformer has a couple of extra taps...

  • Re: Onkyo tx-sr674 no sound

Ok so I found the service manual for the unit and figured out why the amp power rail is low. The power section gets half voltage from the mains transformer when it comes out of standby. Full voltage is not applied until the logic decides everything is okay. I'm assuming that the speaker relays and the power control relay all get signals from the microprocessor to do their jobs. Since every speaker is failing the self-test ( service mode tests display ng), I will begin hunting down digital signals to and from the micro, looking for where the broken link...

  • Re: Onkyo tx-sr674 no sound

Please explain, I don't have any speakers connected to the avr while troubleshooting. The unit comes out of standby, applies half voltage "warmup" to the power amp section. All speaker outputs are failing self test, so the main enable relay never kicks in. I can try injecting different signals (toslink, hdmi, etc.)to see what the avr detects. I'm new to this unit. How should the front panel icons light up under what speaker condition or configuration option possibilities? I know the unit has audessey and auto tune, but nobody left me a microphone...

started a topic Onkyo tx-sr674 no sound

    Onkyo tx-sr674 no sound

Just got this av receiver donated to me. The unit powers up and the front panel seems to function as it should. Speaker enable never happens. Popped the case open and nothing looks or smells burnt. No shorted output transistors. The only thing irregular is the high power rails for the power amp section are +/- 30vdc instead of 50 plus.

Tried the usual tricks: unplug for an hour, plugin turn on, turn volume to max, button dance, volume to min, unplug. Factory clear reset. No love. Checked out the self test, all channels fail with NG message.

    Anybody have a clue where...

  • Re: Westinghouse LD-4655VX secondary failure

Main board tested good when rigged to a samsung monitor panel. Since the tcon boards are no longer available (and they're tab-bonded to the panel), this set is doomed to a life of endless torture on the xbox. It's big, and the kids don't care about the dark picture. Not economical to repair (new or used panel). Such a shame, ,it looked good for one night....

I shot a youtube video of the set:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=no2WNT5P0zY

Are there any models nearly equivalent to this one? It has a Chimei Innolux panel in it (CMO), number V460H1-p09. Can't find a price on only one. Datasheet says the panel supports 3D and 120HZ refresh rate, so I imagine the panel also goes in some more expensive models as well.Re: Westinghouse LD-4655VX secondary failure

Freezing various parts (graphics scaler chip, lvds receiver chip, power fets, etc.) has no effect on operation.

To me, it seems as if a cheap repair is out of reach. The timing controller boards are not available for this unit, since they are bonded with tabs to the panel. The main board is the only real board level repair option. I can do SMD repairs, but have yet to find any real service manuals or info on this unit.

So what do you all think? Is a main board likely to repair this set? I'm not sure my buddy...

  • Westinghouse LD-4655VX secondary failure

This LED backlit LCD TV originally came to me dead. I followed this thread:

    https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=22932&highlight=westinghouse

The original issue turned out to be a burnt ribbon cable end that supplied power to the right half (as viewed) of the LED backlight strip. I cut a quarter inch off the bad end, shaved some plastic back to expose conductors, and reinserted the ribbon cable. The unit lit up fine, and had a pretty good picture for a lower-priced HDTV. I assembled the unit and ran it for "burn-in testing".

  • Re: Westinghouse LD-4655VX - My First LED

Thank you all for sharing this info! A friend of mine has the misfortune of owning one of these sets. Same basic problem as the original poster, mangled ribbon cable(s). I dismantled the unit as Kevin did, removing only the plate by the LVDS board and the black plastic, to reveal just about exactly what he illustrated in post #19.

An ebay search revealed the only seller who had long enough cables was shipping from Thailand and had a 2 week lead time. OEM cables are no longer available as per the local tv shop (where I worked...

  • Re: New Members - please post your introductions here

    Hello all,

This is Jeff in Kentucky. I have been in and out of the electronics industry since the 80's. Every time I get laid off or burnt out from "real" jobs that pay steadily, I get back into some sort of consumer service. When I figure out the money just isn't right, I go back to something industrial. I've worked at tv shops, radio stations, service depots, manufacturers, etc. I love component level repair and improving on engineers' short-lived designs, but found better money doing industrial maintenance....
