• Re: Questions on ESR/RC, replacement cap selection

I think his RC= ripple current.

If your spec sheet does not list ESR it is probably higher.

Be careful that you consult the data sheet for the ripple current multiplier for the correct frequency it will be subjected to.
All manufacturers and series do not use the same frequency of 120Hz for factor @ 1 for their non low ESR types such as your Ruby VXH.
Sometimes 60HZ and sometimes 10KhZ

Low ESR types typically/usually reference 100KHz at ripple factor correction @ 1

• Re: Need ESR values for 8200uf 50v cap

That's just bad info. It's all relative.
A top speed of 140 Kph in a Lamborghini is "really bad", but normal for a ford ford focus.

It is dependent on several factors and asking what is the esr of XX uf @ xx V is not really answerable to any meaningful response.
Data sheet, data sheet, data sheet is the answer

Take this Vishay cap i ran into lately with an esr > 20.
Bad right?
But the data sheet says 32 ohms @ 10Khz. Go figure! see 1st pic
Extreme case, yes...

Re: Capacitor ESR

howdy.
Initially you were talking about specs measured on Nichicons but you showed a pic of a Rubycon.

Attached is an old copy of that SXP series, no esr data, but has ripple current spec dependent of physical size.

Typically the series is a 2 or 3 alpha numeric designation.
Esr will vary by series and manufacturer. Also is dependent on capacitance. temperature rating and physical size.
There is no hard fast rule, but experience will help.
Data sheets are necessary....

A snip from a Panasonic pdf from 2004, i think it was .

Looks like yours are supposed to be 4 week of dec, 2005 and 2006 .. or dec, 2015 and 2016 or afake date code.
Seems like December of 2015 is too fresh, and the ones from dec 2016 are even fresher

• Re: KitchenAid/Whirlpool PCB issues

Hi keith.
They joints can be bad for a few reasons.
They are large heavy components with heavy wires that didn't get heated enough during the solder wave process. In essence their large size and/or what the leads are connected to act like a large heat sink and therefore the joint is "cold". Cold solder joint.

This results in a crappy joint that is brittle and not really stuck to the two pieces that one is trying to join. The joints should be shiny and even.
They can be seen by your photos. They tend to...

• Re: KitchenAid/Whirlpool PCB issues

Start with these joints and any others that look the same.
as per other techniques on soldering, remember you have a dual sided board so you need to get solder to other side for good connections.

But too much heat for too long and you may start to lift foils
cheers, good luck....

Model # please and does it have auto defrost.?
Need an in focus pic of the underside. The relays as well have their solder connections go bad, so resolder that T9 relay

Moving the board correcting the issue probably indicates a bad joint, cracked foil or flaky connector harness. Look inside the harness ends to see if female pins are spread to far apart.

That thermal fuse is most likely a thermostat or re settable over temp cutoff. Where exactly is it located? Pic!

• Re: Unknown Capacitor Brands

Thanks for the quick detective work chozo4. I had seen the Kemet ESC pdf sheet, but I guess I gave up to soon. Normally I'm more diligent/successful.

Oh well, my panny fC was a good match.
With your info I found another pdf for acrotronics ESC with their logo actually printed in the datasheet...

• Re: Unknown Capacitor Brands

Wondering if'n anybody seen this brand before. Go no hits online for the brand or series.
Last week, pulled these out of a washing machine a few years old, maybe a Samsung, filtering a SMPS for 5V.

Brand AV, series ESC 105'C
2 x 2200uF 10V readings were .4 and .57 ohms around 1600 uf's.

Yesterday, buddy brought me another board from a dryer (different brand) and had the same AV brand cap both pre bridge and post SMPS, They all checked Ok and the problem for the dryer was non cap related.

However,...
