Re: Apple sues Samsung
Apple has lost my business all together. Their supremist "we own everything" attitude makes me sick. I can't support a company that uses those business practices.

Re: Dell refurbishing "oops" on GX620 motherboard
After recapping about 150 of these boards myself, it's easy to spot refurbs when it comes to motherboards. You pick up on subtle details here and there. In the case of desktop motherboards however, the easiest way to tell is that they apply a new sticker with the serial number on the board itself. Another way to tell is by comparing the date codes on caps. Most of the time, only the "problem area" caps are replaced, no doubt as a way to make the board last just until the warranty runs out (plus...

Re: Dell refurbishing "oops" on GX620 motherboard
I actually remember these coming in the last few months last year before the extended warranty ran out and thinking "Ruby's never looked like this!". I say I got maybe 15 or 20 like those in and that was it. One thing I remember is that they came with a green tape around the box that said "factory tested" or something like that. It did come from Dell though, but your guess is as good as mine as to who did the rework....

Re: Dell refurbishing "oops" on GX620 motherboard
During the last 2 or so years of receiving refurbished boards from Dell, I have seen a large variety of rework done. Most boards had only the 2200uf caps replaced with Rubycon or Nichicon, while others had only caps that failed replaced. I've gotten boards back with Teapo and Suncon caps. Up until today, I've only seen authentic caps on these boards. Cheap and half-assed work, yes. But never fakes. I'm sure Dell is unware of this, but I'm also pretty sure they don't give a crap. They don't want these boards to last and...Last edited by 4tified; 04-13-2011, 09:14 PM.

Re: Dell refurbishing "oops" on GX620 motherboard
Wow, you guys called it. I thought that by the recent date code and "K" vent on top that maybe Rubycon had just changed their font style a little. I'm usually good about spotting fakes but how blind I was. The Gener-i-bung was a dead giveaway. These were the replacements sent by Dell, but now I'm wondering who is doing the work for them? The rework on the motherboard was spotty too....

Dell refurbishing "oops" on GX620 motherboard
Thought ya'll might get a kick out of this one. For those who have recapped the Optiplex GX620 motherboards, you should be able to pick up on this right away:
For those who are still wondering, I pulled these three Ruby MCZ's from the right of the picture. There are supposed to be three 1500uf, 16v caps, but instead were three 2200uf, 6.3v caps, which of course failed. Suprisingly enough, they lasted a whole 3 months, just goes to show you how great of quality these Ruby's are. Replaced them with Ruby MBZ's 1800uf, 16v. (I'm out of 1500uf's.)Thought ya'll

Re: Dell GX620
Wow. Dell is a piece of work. Seems that the "replacement" motherboards that were sent out around 2009/2010 for the GX620's ONLY had the bulging caps replaced. It's funny to see a mix of Rubycon/Nichicon's of the same value on a motherboard and ever funnier to see the data code of the original Ruby MCZ's, because you KNOW they weren't replaced, and you KNOW the majority will fail RIGHT outside of the 5 year extended warranty mark. As for the boards sent out 4th quarter last year all the way until Janurary 2011, seems ALL the 2200uf, and rear 820uf caps are...

Re: Dell 745.....Here we go again!
I don't know about the SMT's or Minitowers, but the Optiplex 745 USFF PC's I've come across seem to last alot longer than the GX620 equivalents, if for nothing else because the majority came with 1.6/1.8ghz Yonah series processors, which run cold to the touch unless under full load. The first 745's realised with the Pentium D's of course never make it past the 3 year warranty mark, most definatley due to the massive amount of heat within the case. The 755's upward's seem to be Dell's first venture into using 80%+ solid aluminum caps outside of...

Dell Optiplex GX620 USFF High-Pitched Wine
I have recapped literally hundred's of SX280 and GX620 boards, but 1 out of every 10 of them emit a high-pitched wine. I am curious to know what this is. I generally use Rubycon MBZ's and YXG's for the 2200uf replacements and Nippon KZG's (usually 1000uf, 6.3v in place of 820uf, 6.3v). It matters not what caps I use, so I am wondering if anyone has any idea what this noise could be coming from. As with all Dell's USFF models (excluding the new 780's), the power supply is external and isolated from the system.
Thanks!

Re: Hakko 808 too hot!
I think I'm just going to purchase the control board. I'm tired of pissing around with this thing. Too many repairs to do and without my 808, I can't make any extra money.
Thanks for the help guys.

Re: Hakko 808 too hot!
Unfortunately I don't have the old resistor nor a picture of it. I do know that the resistor is replaced was no more than 2 watts (based on the size and shape), but I am not 100% sure of the resistance. There are no schematics of the 808 that I know of, I've looked everywhere. The two things I know of are the tolerance level and the max wattage. Should I try a higher resistance?...

Re: Hakko 808 too hot!
I could've sworn I had the right one!
Do you reckon the 1ohm resistor is too high or too low? I had a feeling the wattage didn't matter, but I just needed to verify....

Hakko 808 too hot!
Recently replaced my Hakko 808 heating element and wasn't paying attention to what I was doing.... shorted the leads coming from the heating element, which in turn blew a resistor. Based on the color bands, I replaced it with an equivalent 1ohm, 2 Watt Resistor with 5% tolerance. (Brown, Black, Gold, Gold). Problem is now, the Hakko desoldering tip glows red after it has heated up, indicating that the temperature is way too high. Turned down voltage as far as it would go and decresed the calibration pot as well, but to no avail.
Is is possible that the because the resistor is 2...
