• Re: Sun 24.1 LCD / Samsung 244T

Gentleman, especially, Jet, Retired, and Bud-

I finally wore down and purchased the new power supply on ebay. It was getting frustrating not having the skillset to properly diagnose (and repair) my board, even with the great help from you all. In the end I spent about $180 to get it back. And, no, in a financial sense it may not have been the best decision, but I am concious of the environment and I felt better about salvaging what I consider a great looking and nicely spec'd monitor as opposed to sending it to a landfill.

I think I'm about ready to raise the white flag here. I've cashed in a great amount of goodwill from you guys and have spent $50 for a questionable board rebuild, and $30 today for more capacitors and a solder pump, and have nothing more to show than a burned smell in my shop.

If I could ask your opinion on a couple more things.

1. There's a "new, open box" power supply on ebay. Would you trust it and/or spend another $110 for one?
2. There's a Samsung 244T 24" on ebay for $200, which uses, I believe,...

Ok, I just returned home from the electronics supply store and replaced the large cap (100uf450v). When I powered it up there was a noisy vibrating sound and the removable fuse blew.

Now that front bezel on/off switch is connected, I get

CM813 ---563 meter set to 2000ohm
CM809 ----10.36 meter set to 20k
CP811 ----4.14 meter set to 20k

Ok, news flash. I just shocked myself reaching across the board. When I touch the red probe to the ground lug on the board and the black probe to the top of the wide heat sink at the middle bottom of the board I get a VDC reading of 63v. What's up here?

Bud, I just pulled the skinny circuit board off the front bezel and hooked it up to the wire harness in photo #1. However, when I depress the power button I still don't get any of the LED lighting up to signal status.

Thanks for all your help, guys. I know it must be frustrating dealing with someone not skilled in troubleshooting.

One more question- The wire harness in my photo #1. It goes to the front bezel on/off switches along with a couple of other switches like Left/Right/PIP, etc. When I'm testing this board, is it ok that it is not connected to anything or should I try and remove the skinny circuit panel behind the bezel and plug it in?

Also, how much can I expect to pay for a new panel? Ballpark range.

Thank...

Bud,

After hooking everything back up I still have 166 on the large cap. I restested the 3 small caps ner the IC and got

CM318-----4.26
CP811------4.82
CM809-----9.9

Also added to previous post.

Thanks

I may have mistakenly made those tests you all suggested on the board without having it connected to everything else. Sorry if I screwed up there.

So, if I'm looking at this correctly there are the 3 we've been testing by the IC and 3 more in front of the large cap, for a total of 7? Anywhere local (Richmond VA) I should be able to find these or should I go online? Bud? Thoughts?

Is Radio Shack a place you all don't think highly of? Here's what I found for the large cap on their site. http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=12438411...

Jet, I'm seeing 168 on main cap.

Bud, you're saying I should have the power board fully hooked up with the other signal and inverter boards? If so, I'll do that. What should I re-check after doing so?

Also, after I hook up all the boards, what about the on/off switch that's attached to the plastic front panel frame. The wire harness is in my post #1, picture 3.

Thanks

Bud,

I have the power switched on with the paddle switch next to the cord on the panel, yes. And the power board is not attached to any of the other boards. It's on the work table by itself.

Bud,

In regard to the 3 pins you had me check. I had VDC at 20 and got

top pin = 0
middle pin = .02
bottom pin= .02

Bear with me as I'm not a techie, but I measured the resistance with my Greenlee DM-20 starting with 200 up to 2000k.

At 200, when I first touched the two I would get a momentary reading of 85 up to 155 then it would drop back to 1 again. Again, I would touch it 3 or 4 times and would get a quick reading and then back to 1 again.

Thanks for taking...

At 2000k I get 180
At 200k I get 26.2
At 20k I get 4.27
At 2000 I get 564

When I touch probes together I get essentially get 0 on the higher #'s. ie 20k or 200k

Ok, I must be doing something wrong. After waiting about a half hour I retested and all showed 0 readings.
Then I powered up again for about 10 seconds and shut down. Then I retested and got the original readings above.

When I set my meter to 200ohms (bottom most setting on above meter photo) I get a reading of 1 before I touch CM813 and the same reading, 1, when I touch each wire.

Ok, checking those 3 caps with meter set to 200 VDC I get 0 volts.

RM801 .5
FM801 .3

FS802S .4 (green torpeda fuse)

Going back to my first post, does the fact that it died all at once upon turning it on one morning have a bearing on anything? No problems beforehand.

Bud,

Am just savvy enough to know how to do basics but not good enough to know which setting on my meter to use for

1. checking the 3 caps
2. checking the RM's

If you'll show me which, I'll set it and get it done....

RM801 and RM803 give a nice buzz on the continuity tester. RM802 is silent.

Bud,

Here are the pictures you requested. Let me know if you need any redone. And thanks for explaining the Hot & Cold side for me.

Jet, good eyes. Yes, it looks as though he replaced the cold side caps with Nichicon (5 of them), but nothing on the hot side.

When I asked the cap repair person if he checked the board after replacing the caps this was his reply: "We do just replace the caps and check those components to ensure they are installed and working properly. As for the power supply itself...that...

Jet,

Ok, that's the all green vs the banded one next to it, right? My meter buzzed happily when I touched the red and black on the ends. The case you kindly send the link to does sound very similar, though I'm no accomplished techie to quickly duplicate everything.

Plain Bill said that it is a two part power board- primary and secondary and that the secondary is always on. How do I tell the two sections apart? What should I check next?

Thank you for you patience and help.
