• Re: Post your bad experiences with Antec power supplies here!

I have too many failed Antecs to take pics of / keep track of-

=(

btw, I just am curious if this is a common thing- on every single PSU carrying fuhjjyo caps which has gone bad on me, the telltale sign before looking at the supply has been hearing "chirping" and noise during any kind of cpu usage through the sound card followed by increased system instability.

• Re: Unsafe PSUs

I would like to see something like that,
as of now I know of a shop where they have the psu's actually out of the boxes, and whenever I am there looking at PSU's, people and salesmen around me get really confused and nervous when they see me looking through a crack in the PSU at some cockeyed angle with a flashlight pointed in the fan grill and scream "Damn this POS had fuhjjyo's in it!"

one time I was asked by a salesman "Can I help you with anything?"
I responded "I just want a PSU which doesn't explode"...

Regarding silverstone, make VERY SURE you don't get one of the silverstones with the modular cables-
they suck something horrible (at least mine did)

I dumped $179 on a 600watt silverstone which I had nothing but trouble with-
it was the one with the modular cables, and it seemed no matter how much tweaking to the molex's you did, you still ended up with shorts.
after getting the ATX connector functioning properly, my computer randomly crashed, and had horrible tolerances on both 12v rails, and the 5v rail.
The...

I do not think so. The slot is actually physically different (the first notch in the EDO ram is moved up just a little from where it is on sdram) from a standard 168pin pc66/100 slot.
I have regular (not ECC) EDO 168pin, but it doesn't work in the board-

but either way it doesn't matter as I have way more powerful equipment at hand and I don't have the VRM for that board to enable the 2 cpus to be used....

What is strange is that the older Antec 300watt psu's seem to have larger sinks, transformers, and most importantly more decent caps than the newer ones. I used to have an Enermax 300watt, and it was because of that supply I switched to antec in the first place. (The 300watt enermax kept on shutting the system down and supplying bad power (EI wavering in voltages by ~1volt at times on the 5v rail) to components, whereas I bought a 300watt Antec and all the problems went away <although it's been some time since then>)...

Thanks for putting my mind at ease-

if they can blow like other caps, I will surely blow them with what I put my comps through and post here with end results if they should come to that-

I am praying for the OST's on my asus a8n-sli deluxe and multiple ECS boards to survive as well....

I used to be that way, then I decided that I needed a working model of at least every generation in order to eat up some hobby time- my 386 for an instance is pretty funny with all the gear I have loaded into it- (It's an AMD 386DX-40) (I managed a sound blaster 16 with that awful mitsumi mpc cd-rom drive(caddy loading!), a 1.44mb teac 3 1/2 floppy drive, a 1.2mb teac 1.2mb 5 1/4 floppy drive, a colorado backup 60mb tape drive, 2 network cards, 3 500meg hdd's, an extra parallel port card, a nice old ATI ISA video card, and of course, 16mb of ram...

LOL
I put a 3.5" 25 meg Conner IDE hdd into my 286 when I built it up, and I creep out computer teachers every year with it too . (yes it still works too)...

I am using enermax right now-
Although they are using PCE-TUR caps which I have not heard exceptionally good things about,

PC power and cooling should make the best psu's, but I've heard they are using PCE-TUR's as well

What I've gotten the gist of from these forums and browsing the interent is if you want a good psu which wont die in 1-2 years, you have to buy one to recap it Re: Power Supplies

I found the best way to protect computers these days is with a linux box and good internet habbits (avoid using Internet Explorer-err Exploder, or Outlook, err LookOut!. The linux box will take care of the direct port attacks, and I suggest something like Symantec Corperate Antivirus to take care of virus issues. Where dlinks have smoked up after overheating, belkins had given out, linksys's have been bypassed and hacked through/rebooted, and my trusty cisco 5000 was made into a mash and required a complete nvram reset more than once, my linux box...

Re: good old days.

heck, I still have a functional 386, 286, Columbia Data MPC1600 (8088), IBM PC (Original, 8088), IBM XT (8088), 4 working commodore 64's with 8 working power supplies, a literal ton of appleII's, and if that weren't enough, a 1978 Sansui reciever with original caps which has pretty much run 24x7 for 10 years that I know of.
Ever since I started seeing those damn abit motherboards back in the p3c socket 5 and 7 (Pentium MMX) era with the leaky caps, I've been scratching my head wondering how all of our time, research, and knowledge spent manufacturing capacitors...

never mind about my last comment, I see this forum allows attachments-

Anyway, here are just a few failed units, I am sorry for the poor quality of the images.

psu002.jpg is a 300watt Antec

psu003.jpg is a 300watt codegen

psu004.jpg is another 300watt Antec

Well, I am annoyed to tell you all the truth, and think that PSU's should have their own section here- I am totally frustrated with bad PSU's since antec introduced the truepower line and their quality went down the tubes.

Antec PSU's I've bough have sucked for a good while now, and it's all due to bad capacitors, fuhjyuu's, to be exact-

In the last month alone AT MY HOUSE
-
Thus far Antec wise, I've lost 2x 2200uf/16v's, 3x 3300uf/10v's fuhjyuu's out of a truepower 430, a 820uf/15v out of a smartpower 300, a 2200uf/16v, a 1650uf/16v,2x 680uf/10v, a...
