  • Re: Backlight, Brightness, and Contrast settings

Thanks truep that is exactly the answer I was looking for. I have mine now set at 50%. Yes I get that every set has different settings, but I was looking for the answer to whether the brightness and contrast settings affect the LED life besides the backlight setting. We'll see how long this set lasts this time.

Try using a heat gun and freeze spray to see if you can narrow down the heat related problem area. (providing you have a heat gun and freeze spray of course). You can substitute the heat gun with a hair dryer but it doesn't direct the heat into a small area as good. But it does heat up areas quicker and you then can use the freeze spray to isolate the problem.

  • Re: LG 55LM4600 faulty LED Driver or Backlights?

It's most likely an LED failure at full operating current. The battery test is good to weed out open or shorted LED's, but it really doesn't test the LED's under normal operating current and after they heat up. I had the same problem. I operated the LED's normally with it taken apart so I could watch. I sped up the process by using a hair dryer on the suspected defective area. One LED would open up and the whole strip of 6 goes out (in series). Turned out to be a bad solder connection to the LED.

Yes I imagine that is what killed my 42" LG. I had to pull it apart and find the open LED and replace it with 5 diodes in series. But I just got a refurb 55" and I figured there was an approx. "safe" setting of the backlight to prevent the poor LED's from being overworked
I will try starting about 50% and see what I can do with the other settings to make up for the lower backlight. That is why I was asking.... is it just the backlight setting that causes the stress, or does the...

  • Backlight, Brightness, and Contrast settings

    Hello all,
I may suggest the answer to this question might be made a sticky.
I am looking for the nominal Backlight, Brightness, and Contrast settings to enable a decent picture and at the same time prevent the LED"s from premature failure. I realize all sets have different menus and settings might be variable, but hopefully someone has something to get you in the ballpark. I just don't know how low to put the backlight setting, or how high you can safely set it. And do the Brightness and Contrast settings also affect the life of the LED's as much as the Backlight setting, or...

  • Re: LG 42LN5200 Vertical Line

All ribbons look fine. Both the ribbons and connector pins all look good under a mag glass. I swapped ribbons with same result. Guess the problem is the panel itself. Oh well I was so excited when I found the bad LED and bypassed it, and got the backlights to work. Guess I was too rough taking the panel apart to get to the backlights. Can't believe LG doesn't get a class action suit for this problem. This TV is barely 3 years old.
Off topic but does anybody have the correct approximate Backlight, Brightness, and Contrast settings I should set...

I will have to look at that closer and see. Thank You for that suggestion....

Yes I tried that for quite sometime. All 6 of the ribbons that go to the panel and to the 2 thin PC boards along the bottom rail. I rubbed them all while watching the screen- the line never changed. I came to the conclusion that it is the LCD internally itself? Don't know if that could be it or not....

Yes sir, I did disconnect those ribbon cables when I took everything apart. I re-seated them several times hoping that it might correct the line. I also cleaned the connectors with meth ( I use methanol solution also on camera sensors because it doesn't leave residue behind)....

  • Re: LG 42LN5200 Vertical Line

I imagine COF is the flexprint that goes from the small PC boards directly to the LCD? If so, yes I checked them when I took the whole thing apart the second time. They looked OK, but I am wondering if there is a small tear that I cannot see internally. Maybe one of the traces inside the print? Is there any other troubleshooting I can do, such as what to expect if I lift the ribbons to the T-Con ect. and if they would eliminate anything else it could be. I have no way to fix and bond new prints going to the screen so if that is what it turns out to...

  • LG 42LN5200 Vertical Line

    Hi All,
I am attempting to get the above mentioned set working. It has a July, 2013 date code and I purchased it on Black Friday, 2013. The original problem was a dark screen ( no backlight ) but everything else was normal. I determined it was the LED's at fault so I took it apart down to the LED's , tested each LED with my DVM on the diode test range so the LED"s would light up, and found one open LED. I tried reflowing the solder pads going to the LED just in case it was just a bad connection, but no luck. So I "bypassed" the LED using 5 1N4004 diodes in series. Bango,...

  • Re: New Members - please post your introductions here

OK hello everyone. I have been lurking on this forum on a couple of occasions where I came across it doing a google search for a specific problem I was having on a computer motherboard or a TV. What a great forum it is. I was attempting to get my LG TV up and running and came across this forum again, so I decided to register this time, and here I am.

I'll be posting my first post when I get that privilege granted. Not sure how long I have to wait but I'll keep checking....
