Re: Apple PowerBook - noise when charger connected + battery problem
Well, installed new battery and there seems to be no problem in charging and using the machine with only battery installed. I guess battery was just bad. I haven't tested other chargers yet so that may remain a mystery why they don't work with the machine.

Re: Packard Bell laptop, dead
I do have hot air gun but.. did those sparks already kill that ISL ?

Re: Packard Bell laptop, dead
I did get more voltages on the left side (in that picture) there was 3.5V and I think even 5V. There was also 19V and after that I apprently f**ked up and the was a spark so is this as good as junk now?
And because I cannot do any surface mount soldering I think my skills and equipment are not enough to fix this. I was hoping that the problem would have been in the bios battery connector or DC IN board.

Re: Packard Bell laptop, dead
Sorry now I don't understand, there is no pq printed anythere or??
I was able to get 3.54V on one pin on that ISL chip.

Re: Packard Bell laptop, dead
Oh sorry, here are results:
1: 102
2: over 1000, like 1300 or something, then goes to 1
3: Same as 2
4: 002
I did switch to 20V and connected charger with ISL. I circled around but it stays to zero.Last edited by weekay; 02-27-2014, 11:06 AM.

Re: Packard Bell laptop, dead
It was on 2000.
It seems my multimeter is complaining about battery, just bought it today with the stock one inside. However, it still stays on but I get absolutely nothing from that ISL chip. Very tiny pins but I tried to be careful, nothing.

Using the setting on the attached picture, here are results:
1: 003
2: 111
3: 105
4: 000...

Wait, did I just do something different, now only the number 4 beeps ??

Re: Packard Bell laptop, dead
Both of those points give 19V.
EDIT: You added text when I was writing my reply, I will test that.
Picture attached.
EDIT2: From those four chips, counting from up on that picture, 1 and 4 give beep, other not....Last edited by weekay; 02-27-2014, 10:35 AM.

Re: Packard Bell laptop, dead
OK. Now that there is 19V I guess it rules out dc in then... what about that bios battery connector? Since previous owner has clearly done his own solderings there, is there a way to measure that point, that it is OK ?

Re: Packard Bell laptop, dead
EDITED: Sorry, I already forgot how to measure. Now I did put black to that ring and measured with red, I do get 19V on all of those!Last edited by weekay; 02-27-2014, 09:58 AM.

Re: Packard Bell laptop, dead
I get 19V when measuring from the connector pins on mobo, first 1 and 3 then 2 and 4, matching colors.
Am I wrong but fuse should be tested with that buzzer setting, to see if there is connectivity? If so, then there is... but will measure again if I'm wrong.
EDIT: The multimeter made the beeping noise for fuse.
Pictures attached....Last edited by weekay; 02-27-2014, 09:40 AM.

Re: Packard Bell laptop, dead
OK, with that same setting on multimeter (20 VDC) I do get 19 which I believe means that there is power, this laptop uses 19V charger.
So problem lies somewhere on the board then?Last edited by weekay; 02-27-2014, 09:08 AM.

Re: Packard Bell laptop, dead
OK, thanks for your patience, I'm learning I'm learning
However, if I did everything right the value remains zero on the multimeter. Charger is connected.

Does this mean that DC IN board/cable is broken and there is simply no power going to the motherboard? Bios battery is not connected at all at the moment, but I think it shouldn't matter.... or atleast machines should power on fine without a battery at all?Re: Packard Bell laptop, dead
...your patience,

Re: Packard Bell laptop, dead
I have to apologize but I don't know how to proceed. I now have multimeter and everything ready.

What setting on multimeter ? VDC 20?
Red lead to a point, black to something metal ?Re: Packard Bell laptop, dead
...ething metal ?Re: Packard Bell

Re: Packard Bell laptop, dead
OK, will do that later.
The DC IN connector is this kind of thing:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ORIGINAL-PACKARD-BELL-EASYNOTE-HERA-GL-HGL1-DC-POWER-JACK-CABLE-/371012025005
Bios battery is connected to motherboard via cable, like this:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Packard-Bell-Hera-GL-Laptop-Cmos-Bios-Battery-/121261059843?pt=UK_Computing_Other_Computing_Networking&hash=item1c3bb8ef03
And apparently previous owner has somehow managed to break the connector at the end...Last edited by weekay; 02-25-2014, 07:54 AM.

Re: Packard Bell laptop, dead
OK, I have very little experience in that area altough I have fixed some laptops. I will get to it later. I was now able to get charger which has indicator led, it does not go away so does that immediately rule out shortcircuit or is that little more complicated?
Thanks for any info. For this model there seems to be plenty of DC IN connectors / cables available, the connector seems to be very solid design but I guess it still can fail so often that seller stock it.

Re: Packard Bell laptop, dead
Hi, I can get multimeter, but I have no idea where I should measure those voltages.
