My XFX Core Edition Pro 450W power supply started making a weird ticking noise some time ago. Eventually, I figured out what the issue was, and managed to fix it. I purchased this unit back in 2012, so it's an old model, but I'm still posting this in case someone finds it helpful or interesting.
THE PROBLEM
The power supply started making an irregular ticking noise when running, but would otherwise work perfectly fine. The issue would sometimes come and go. A Google search for "xfx core ticking" found multiple other people reporting the same issue, so I assume...

Re: Corsair HX620 popped
Alright, so I desoldered the burnt thermistor (it was very "crispy" and fell into little pieces when I removed it, so I couldn't read any markings, but it was perhaps around 10mm in diameter), cut the legs of both PFC transistors, and added a jump wire from the anode of the PFC diode to the main capacitor. It works fine now.
I think I know what went wrong too. I use a power strip with a switch to turn off all computer related devices. I've been hearing a muffled "pop" every now and then when closing the switch, for the last...Last edited by ntoskrnl; 12-01-2015, 01:32 PM.

Re: Corsair HX620 popped
So I did actually find a burnt component. It's a green disc shaped one marked TR301 (an MOV?), and it's sandwiched right between the main filter cap and the main transformer. There's very little room around it. I'm going to try desoldering it now.
edit: It's a thermistor apparently: http://www.jonnyguru.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11537 I guess something else is shorted as well then.
edit: There's no way I could find a replacement thermistor without knowing its specifications. Can I just cut the legs of the shorted PFC...Last edited by ntoskrnl; 11-30-2015, 01:33 PM.

Re: Corsair HX620 popped
Hmm, I guess a bit more harmonics in the distribution grid doesn't matter that much.
The review I linked earlier says it's a Seasonic S12. I wonder what I should disconnect; is it enough to cut the legs on the APFC FETs or should I also disable the APFC chip?

Corsair HX620 popped
My trusty old Corsair HX620 blew the fuse today when I tried to power up my computer. The power supply is from 2008 (manufactured in late 2007 according to the stamp on the PCB). There was no audible or visual spectacle at all.
I opened it up of course, and there don't seem to be any popped transistors, burn marks or other visually obvious failures. All the capacitors seem fine as well (they're quality stuff). The fuse and bridge rectifier measured good, but I found a heatsinked three-legged TO220 component on the primary side that appears to be shorted. My search was by no means...

Re: BenQ G2420HDBL weird white patterns
I checked the panel with a known working power supply and mainboard like I said.

Re: BenQ G2420HDBL weird white patterns
I'm going to junk it since the problem is in the panel.

Re: BenQ G2420HDBL weird white patterns
I removed some more tape so I could get better access to the TCON and the brown ribbons. I wiggled all of them around but there's no effect on the picture.
I now also think the buzzing sound is coming from the panel and not the TCON. There's a coil on the TCON which I tried pressing on with no effect. What could make such a noise inside the panel?
This one has LED backlights so it's not that either.
Sadly the only camera I have here is a friend's phone, so I'm not sure I can get clear pictures.Last edited by ntoskrnl; 08-25-2014, 06:27 AM.

BenQ G2420HDBL weird white patterns
I have a BenQ G2420HDBL from 2010 that exhibits white, flickering, static-like image distortion (see photo). It is accompanied by a slight buzzing sound from the upper corner, either from the TCON board or the panel itself. The ~10Hz rate of buzzing seems to match the flickering. It also appears that the physical orientation of the monitor affects the pattern -- it seems to get a little better when the monitor is laid on its back.
The distortion happens even when no video input is connected. Other than this distortion, the monitor works fine.
I tried the panel and...

Re: fsp271-4f01 repair and wire coding - schematic?
Is it an ATX power supply? The "power on" wire is usually bright green. Short it to ground and the unit should come alive.
Also check the ATX connector pinout: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ATX#Power_supplyRe: fsp271-4f01 repair and wire codi...org/wiki/ATX#P

Re: Medion digial TV tuner doesn't power on – Bulged capacitor in power supply
I'm going to order some Panasonic FC, FM and FR caps tomorrow. Does this sound reasonable?
The replacement caps are physically a bit larger, but the board seems to have room for them. The current caps don't completely fill the painted circles and the legs are bent....Last edited by ntoskrnl; 09-25-2012, 12:25 PM.

Medion digial TV tuner doesn't power on – Bulged capacitor in power supply
I have a Medion digital TV tuner that has strange and varying issues powering up from standby. I opened it up and found out that a small 470uF electrolytic capacitor on the power supply board is clearly bulged.
All the dozen or so secondary side capacitors on the power supply are G-Luxon, which is listed in the "Bad Cap Manufacturers" list. The primary capacitor is a Samxon, but I've heard that primary capacitors usually don't fail.
If I were to replace all the secondary caps, is there something I need to consider, other than voltage, capacitance and physical...
