Re: Ultrasonic cleaner: transistor identification help please
Sorry for the delay in replying. I'm more than a little out of my depth here but I think I am managing to follow bits and pieces of the discussion.
I dug the cleaner out from the shed today, and snapped a picture of the label (attached). There are 6 transducers inside, and if the label is to be believed these run at 30khz.
@redwire You're right. It completely slipped my mind to mention it, but the middle legs are insulated.
And @eccerr0r thank you for the schematic!

Re: Ultrasonic cleaner: transistor identification help please
Thanks eccerr0r, I'll put that on the list of possibles!
This gave me a little hope! I tried cellulose and 2k thinner, a knife blade, then various grades of sandpaper, but unfortunately it really is just a rough surface.
If I did go for BUF420AW as a replacement, should I replace all 4 transistors, despite 2 of the "old" ones being good?
And what should I be looking for in a replacement if I wanted to compare the old, to the BUF420AW...

Ultrasonic cleaner: transistor identification help please
I inherited an old, dead, Ultrasonic Cleaner. Inside was a loose live wire which seems to have likely shorted to ground and damaged some caps, diodes and two transistors, as well as popping the inline fuses.
Attached are images of the power board, a close-up of one of the good transistors, and the results when I put the latter in one of those transisitor-tester things (I've never used the latter for this type of component before so I don't know how accurate it is).
As you can see there are no markings on the chip at all (other than a faint smiley face, so I don't get...Last edited by VujeDe; 06-10-2017, 12:17 PM.

Re: MS-14921 (MSI GE40) from dead, to deader. Advice please?
Here's the latest. Read about blind flashing to recover a dodgy AMIBios. So I created a FAT formatted USB with AMIBOOT.ROM file in root, and plugged in a USB keyboard ready. Switched it on and spammed ctrl+home and BIOS recovery didn't work.
Instead it booted straight in to the stock BIOS!
So. What the hell happened there then? Is there a "rescue" BIOS that's triggered to load by ctrl+home?

Re: Anyone have ERSA Product Experience?
I have an old MicroCon 60IA with a TechTool iron that I picked up a couple of years ago, cheap. The element has recently gone in the iron and it is eye-wateringly expensive (90GBP from RS Components) [admittedly I forgot to get a price from Blundell, despite the station originally being from there!].
So expensive that I bought an Antex setup. The tips for that are 10% the price of ERSA's too! However, the ERSA seems better screwed together and heated up the iron quicker.
Basically keep in mind what stj said re:...Last edited by VujeDe; 11-17-2016, 12:30 PM.

Re: MS-14921 (MSI GE40) from dead, to deader. Advice please?
In reply to my previous post: I've swapped the power board ribbon cable for one from elsewhere in the laptop, and I'm now back to getting the brief flash from the power LED when I push the power button!
I sort of know what a socketed BIOS chip looks like, but I see nothing that looks like that on this board, so would assume it's surface mount
Is it likely to be that? What would be the next step?
Thanks again

Re: MS-14921 (MSI GE40) from dead, to deader. Advice please?
Thanks for the suggestion but there is no change when trying this.
My initial thought was a corrupt BIOS but unfortunately I don't have the equipment to remove and reflash the chip.
Right now, I think I need to get it to respond to the power button, or bypass that and see if the board will go back to powering on and off again. As right now, it does nothing.Re: MS-14921 (MSI GE40) from dead, to deader. Advice please?

MS-14921 (MSI GE40) from dead, to deader. Advice please?
Hi all. I've got what once was an MSI GE40 sitting here that has had a hard life. I bought it for the screen (14" 1080p IPS panel, that I haven't been able to test yet...) with a dead Mobo.
I was curious how "dead" so I plugged it in and the charging LED lit up. Pushing the power button gave a brief flash of the power LED, then nothing.

[*]So I removed ram, swapped for known-good, switched slots, tried none. No change.
[*]Removed and reseated CPU. No change.
[*]Removed battery. No change. Measured PSU with voltmeter = 19.35v
[*]Removed...Last edited by VujeDe; 11-15-2016, 11:42 AM.

Re: New Members - please post your introductions here
Hello. I'm Tom and I spelt my username wrong.
I like to (try and) fix broken things as I find it depressing seeing what gets thrown out and into landfill. However my electronic fixing skills are limited, and I have accumluated a pile of half/none working electrical items.
Most searches for information in some way lead back to here, so I thought I'd sign up
EDIT: Yeah, so I've already posted in this thread when I originally signed up. Sorry!

Re: New Members - please post your introductions here
Hello everyone. I know very little, or relatively nothing, about electronics (witchcraft!) but am keen to learn and understand.
I also spelt my username wrong because I was half-asleep when I registered, which isn't a great start is it...!
Cheers, Tom.
