  • Re: Inside an old Netgear Wi-Fi router

I found an old Belkin router with a similar arrangement. It had a PCMCIA (looking) card plugged into the mainboard and an external antenna connector.

But when I took it out and tried to use it in two laptops, it didn't recognize on either one. I put it in the router again and it worked fine, so I would assume it isn't PCMCIA compatible or some of the pins were switched around, possibly to stop anyone from reusing it?

  • Re: Sony STR-270AV Louder in One Channel

Nevermind, it turned out to be a bad connection between the volume pot and the main board.

  • Sony STR-270AV Louder in One Channel

I got this Sony stereo receiver for free from a neighbor as broken. It seems to be working (mostly) except for the fact that it is somewhat quieter in the right channel. The right channel is sometimes intermittent, and if I turn up the volume, it brings the right channel back. The right channel also seems like it doesn't have enough treble and too much base.

I have already tried swapping the speakers and source. I used deoxit on the speaker selector switch, and the right channel seems to be less intermittent. The left channel works fine now that I cleaned the switch.

I just disassembled the panel, and found the problem. One of the CCFLs was shorting to the frame of the panel, just like the other thread.

    Asus ve205

I have an ASUS VE205 that was given to me with the 2 seconds to black symtoms. I replaced all of the caps (They were Lelon and Elite garbage) with Panasonics, but the problem still persisted. Then I tried checking the CCFLs with another monitor, and they worked fine. I also tried a known good spare, and when I plugged it in to the top connector, the monitor stayed on. With it plugged into the bottom, it still shut off after two seconds.

Then, just to see what would happen, I plugged the bottom ccfl into the top connector, and the top ccfl into the bottom connector, and lo and behold,...

  • Re: Increase PSU Efficiency?

I just got around to recapping my DC5000 and replacing the mosfet + rectlifier and now it is running much cooler. Instead of scorching hot, it is now only barely warn to the touch. I would call this experiment a success!

momaka: No, I have not recapped the motherboard yet. If you could give me the list of caps for the poly mod, that would be appreciated. I just noticed on my other dc5000 has two bulging caps by the memory slots. I figure I should recap both boards.

I have ordered the STP21N90K5 along with some other parts, from mouser and I will report back on how it goes once the order arrives. Hopefully, it won't .

Here are some pictures of this psu....

Ok, yes I will replace the ultrafast rectifier, I have found another mosfet (ST STP21N90K5) with a slightly higher RDS (0.25 ohms), but a 900v 18.5A rating. That should work right?

  • Re: Increase PSU Efficiency?

Ok, I will test the PSU outside of the case and see how much heat it puts off.

The problem with the fan, and cooling the psu in general is that it is so packed full of components and wiring that even with a powerful fan it is almost impossible to get adequate airflow. It also means that many of the caps are touching or very close to the heatsinks. Last time, I tried insulating the capacitors from the heatsink with heatshrink tubing but the psu is so hot inside that it didn't seem to make much of a difference.

    I was thinking...

  • Increase PSU Efficiency?

I have a HP/Compaq DC5000 SFF pc, that uses a proprietary PSU that runs HOT!! It runs so hot that I have had to recap it twice. It even managed to bloat some Panasonic FC capacitors after about 4 years of 24/7 use. I tried connecting the fan directly to 12v, but found that it was very noisy and not very effective. I have also removed the brown glue that goes conductive over time.

Anyway, I was wondering if it would be possible to increase the efficiency of the supply, and reduce the heat output, by replacing the primary side mosfet, which is a single Fairchild 9N90C 900v 9A part...

Hi, my username is ishelly404, I have been lurking on the fourm for about 6 months, but just recently registered and started posting.

Just a little about me, I have been reparing electronics for about 6 years, usually picking up broken pc's, lcd tv/monitors and various small electronics cheap or free, and then reselling them on ebay, craigslist etc. I dont usually make much of a profit on items I have repaired, its more of a hobby than anything else. I am also a keen ham radio operator. I have a General class license,...

  • Re: Packard Bell Maestro 190W psu problem

Sounds like the startup capacitor to me. Look for a small (usually 47uf) capacitor near the smps control chip. Changing that should fix the problem.

  • Re: Possible to have a CPU with one bad core?

I just tried the cpu in another system that I borrowed from a friend, and all four cores of the CPU seem to be working fine. The PSU also seems to be ok, none of the caps are vented. It doesn't seem to be a memory issue either, when the memory was installed in another system, it passed Memtest86 with no errors. And even though the graphics corruption was fixed by installing the Radeon HD 5770 video card, the instability wasn't.

I think that means new motherboard time.

The system seemed to be stable for about a day with the 4th core disabled, but now there is graphics corruption, and firefox won't even start. What should I look at now? Is it possible that it is a problem with the onboard GPU?

EDIT: Just tried installing a ATI Radeon HD 5770 card, and it seems to be working, at least for now, but I will have to see how it holds up

  • Re: Possible to have a CPU with one bad core?

I have already tried to run Prime95 with the 4th core enabled, and as soon as I click ok to start the stress test, Prime95 crashes. It runs fine without the 4th core or when I set it to only run three threads.

When I try to boot the Ubuntu LiveCD, it goes into a kernel panic almost right away.

I have tried reseating the heatsink, and even repaced the AMD stock cooler with a beefy Rocketfish RF-UPCUWR cooler and some arctic silver compound. The cpu idles at about 18°C, and at full load reaches about 30°C,...

The PSU I am using is a Seasonic X series fanless 400w, but I used a crappy logysis 550 watt psu (more like 250 watt) for a few months before I knew better.

I ran memtestX86+ for 10 hours last night and the windows 7 memory test, and it showed no errors.

  • Re: Possible to have a CPU with one bad core?

When I checked the motherboard for bad caps, I found that most of them are polymers or Panasonic FJ, but there are a few Chemi-Con KZG caps by the PCI-E slots and the USB ports. None of them appear to be bulging or leaking though. Is it possible for them to go bad after only a year? The system has been on 24/7.

EDIT: I just disabled the 4th core in the BIOS, and the system seems stable.

  • Possible to have a CPU with one bad core?

I have a system with an AMD Athilon II X4 640 cpu that has been unstable ever since I got it. Windows would crash randomly and an Ubuntu livecd wouldn't even boot.

After some troubleshooting, I found that the culprit was the cpu, and when I looked in windows task manager, the 4th core was always at about 60%, even when the other cores were idle.

Anyway, I was wondering if disabling the 4th core in the bios would be enough to fix the problem, or is it new cpu time?
