Thanks for sharing Peste. I did manage to program it successfully in situ with the clip. The battery was disconnected of course. Agreed, though that it might not be best practice...

Just adding a few notes around the bigger picture since I don't see it in the discussion:[LIST=1][*]I read the old BIOS using a CH341B with an IC clip and a I.8V adaptor.[*]The IC clip is finicky. Many reads/write failed until I positioned this correctly.[*]I used Neoprogrammer to program the BIOS with the new image. To achieve that I had to autodetect the device type and select the 1.8v option. I also had to tick unprotect, blank etc. on the write menu. AsProgrammer didn't work for me. Perhaps I did something wrong.[*]HxD hex editor is handy for comparing the supplied file with the one I read...
