Re: HP dc7800
Is it really? or maybe your just not doing it right!
Believe it or not, I've done it before (multiple times) with a cheapo 30W iron!
Here's what I learned, a lot of motherboards and other circuit boards from recent years are ROHS complaint, and this basically means that they use lead-free solder. Now this kind of solder melts at much higher temperatures than ordinary one. When I first started doing these kind of stuff, I too couldn't get the solder to melt and considered buying a higher-wattage iron, but I decided to do some research first and found...

Re: Samsung R510 no video fault
Maybe so, but let me give you another perspective, if the problem seems too difficult to repair and you can get the motherboard replaced on the cheap, why not? just think about it. Is it really worth spending days or even weeks of your time trying to repair a device you can cheaply replace?...

Re: Samsung R510 no video fault
This is a bit too technical for me, but here's my two cents, instead of trying
to fix it, you could just take the easy out and get the motherboard replaced!
It should have a part number on it, if you look it up on ebay or google, odds are
you'll find a seller who sells it for a reasonable price.

Re: Samsung R510 no video fault
If you have multiple RAM sticks, try one at a time (could be a bad one causing it)
Also, trying an external monitor would be a good idea (just make sure you press the correct key combo to switch the output)

Re: where to find soldering services?
Well, any electronic repair shop should have electronics techs who would
know how to do such a thing. Other than that, some electronic stores also
offer such services (and just to be clear, by electronic stores I'm referring to stores who sell equipment for working with electronics, as in soldering irons, capacitors, resistors and the like)

Capacitor discharge questions
I've googled this extensively, but couldn't find a decent answer.
What resistors are ideal for discharging motherboard and/or power supply capacitors? I found all kind of different recommendations, like 5W 2K, 5W 100K, 5W 20K and the list goes on and on, but nothing definitive!
All help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Need help identifying this special capacitor
There is no logo and that's the only text appearing on it.
It's a short, surface mounted aluminum capacitor with black on the left side and it looks similar to this one:
Thanks for the quick reply btw.
Edit: That sounds like a good guess to me, Makes a lot of sense. But I'll wait to see if anyone got any other ideas before I make the purchase.Last edited by Anndy; 08-26-2012, 09:52 AM.

Need help identifying this special capacitor
Hey all. I need to replace an aluminum smd capacitor on a video card and I'm quite puzzled as to what it's value actually is because it's kinda cryptic.
All it says on it is:
Anyone have a clue what this means?...
