Re: Intel D865PERL caps
Are you using an 800 degree tip? My 700 degree tip does NOT do well with the lead-free solder on motherboards....

Re: Intel D865PERL caps
What sort of equipment are you using to desolder caps from motherboards?...

Re: Viewsonic VX910
No, I'm positive the power supply card is the problem. The PWM chip is not oscillating. I'm 75% sure it's the problem. I'm probably not going to fix it....

Re: Acer Aspire 5517
I don't have the tools or the expertise to reball. How would I find someone in my area (or anywhere in the US) who does? Every one around here that I can find is a board changer.Last edited by neumannu47; 03-19-2015, 05:42 AM.

Re: Capacitors in CFL's
Take a look at the Cree 60W LED bulbs for less than $5.00 at Home Depot. They are better than incandescents, and with the high line voltages that we have in the US now, they last a LOT longer than incandescents. My wife the color of the light from CFLs. She can't tell the difference between an incandescent and a Cree LED.
I'm not an environmental wacko, but I'm a BIG fan of Cree LED lighting. About 1/2 of the bulbs in my home are Cree LEDs. If I move, I will take them with me. Thanks for reminding me of that!

What is reball? Are these computers known for cold solder joints?...

Re: Viewsonic VX910
I've decided to pack it in on this board. The problem is escaping me although it looks a lot like a bad PWM chip. If it's pad, I'm not sure I can see well enough to replace it since it's an SMD. I did order a through-hole version of the PWM chip so that I can play with it outside of the circuit. That will help me with future repairs.

Re: Capacitors in CFL's
Home Depot runs the Cree 60W LED bulbs on special quite often. I hate CFLs. I love LEDs. CFLs are expensive and don't last as long as incandescents, in my experience. LEDs are the future. I have four 60 watt LEDs in a ceiling fixture in my shop. Try that with incandescents. CFLs don't fit....

Re: Acer Aspire 5517
I created a Crisis Disk on floppy, USB stick, and even CD, all according to various instructions I've read over the Internet. The wincris.exe file actually formats the drive and makes it bootable. The problem is that the 5517 is not accessing the USB stick or the USB floppy drive. It acted like it wanted to read the CD drive, but it stopped after just a few seconds.
The instructions I saw for using the CD drive said to simply put the .fd file (not the .wph file) on the disk and boot. That doesn't fit with any of the other techniques I've heard...

Re: Acer Aspire 5517
I tried both ports. I'm pretty sure I formatted the stick wrong. What is the correct procedure? The manual said to use wincris.exe to create a bootable disk on XP, which is what I did.Last edited by neumannu47; 03-17-2015, 09:47 PM.

Re: Viewsonic VX910
I'm thinking the same as you are. What gives me pause is that while pin 2 does have a pull-up resistor to 6 volts, I have no idea what's inside the "Limited Power Controller". It could have the ability to clamp pin 2 to ground. However, even if it does, there will almost always be at least 0.1 volts on the pin. I measure no voltage on the pin at all.
When I get home tonight, I'm going to remove the phototransistor and test again, but I'm sure it's not shorted....

Acer Aspire 5517
A friend was doing a Windows Update with his Acer Aspire 5517 thinking he had the power supply connected. It was not. The battery died during the updates, and the computer will not boot. The power light comes on and, if you hold the button for 5 seconds, the computer will turn off.
I've tried everything I know to try:

Remove the battery for six hours.
Hold the power button for several minutes with no battery or power.
Try to run the Crisis Disk with a USB stick.
Try to run the Crisis Disk with a USB floppy.
Based on the extensive Internet research...

Re: Viewsonic VX910
Yes, I did. Why would the inverter section have an impact on the PWM chip's operation? The inverter section is not dragging the power supply down.
If there is a short, I can't find it.
Pin 2 on U320 is connected to a phototransistor. The voltage on pin 2 is exactly zero - not even a tenth of a volt that you would expect if the phototransistor were all the way on. There is no voltage on the LED on PC330A. The transistor in the phototransistor is not shorted....

Viewsonic VX910
I have a VX910 that died. The power light flashes, but the monitor will not turn on. When I opened it up, there were several caps with bulging ends. The large cap, which does not normally fail, was not only bulging, one lead fell off when I touched it.
After replacing all of the electrolytic caps with low ESR 105 degree parts, the problem persists. I've started doing some probing on the power supply board, and it seems that the PWM chip is not starting up. The 10uF startup cap has been replaced twice, just for good measure. There is 171 volts across the big cap. The only activity...

Exercising Motherboard
Is there a utility that can be used to continuously "exercise" the motherboard? I have one with a brand new installation of XP that locked up once. It has now run for several days with no problems, but there was no apparent reason for it to lock up.

Re: ECS P4VXASD2+ Locking Up
Yes, I installed SP3, and it could be the problem that you suggest. I've been running it for the last few hours with Avast while doing some intenstive archiving with WinRAR, and so far, no lock ups.
A friend went by Tiger Direct's local store to pick up a new motherboard after they told me on the phone that they had two in stock. When he got there, not only could he not find the one that had supposedly been put aside for me, they did not have one in stock. That's TD for you.
