Re: APC UPS units - troubleshooting
Is this why the alternator on my old car died? I long suspected that the car battery with the shorted cell killed the alternator. The battery was replaced and the alternator died a couple of weeks later....

Re: APC UPS units - troubleshooting
I have a couple of SmartUPS where the batteries were bulging. I got them that way (they were freebies). At least I was able to get the batteries out without metal work....

Re: storm season is here.long run ups mods
I have an APC Smart UPS 1000 (not sure of the exact model--it's a 4U unit that originally had two 12V 7AH batteries in series. One of the older beige-front units, not the newer black-front ones).
I modified it to use two marine deep cycle batteries (Costco Kirkland Signature 85AH group 24 batteries--made by Johnson Controls). It can power a Dell Optiplex 260 with a 15" LCD screen (the Optiplex was running Folding at Home so it was consuming more power) for about 14 hours. It was pulling about 6 amps from the batteries...

Re: 20 to 24-pin PSU Converters, anyone using them?
What about those motherboards that have the extra "ATX12V" 4-pin power connector? (which consists of two ground wires and two 12V wires)
Can you power those with a supply that doesn't have the ATX12V connector?
I've got a lot of ATX power supplies that do not have the ATX12V connector. I think they make adapters to convert a disk drive power connector to ATX12V for the motherboard, do these work?

Re: abs 5-port gigabit ethernet switch, bad caps in power supply
The ATX power supply claims something upwards of 10 amps on the 3.3V rail (I don't recall the exact figure), of course it's entirely possible that the ATX power supply I used doesn't even work right, since I never tested it in a PC. (All I did was measure the 3.3V output with no load).

abs 5-port gigabit ethernet switch, bad caps in power supply
This switch died on me last week. According to the logs on my Linux machine, I discovered the problem just 12 minutes after the Linux machine lost the link to the switch. The power light on the switch lights up but the "alive" light doesn't blink.
I took it apart and I found a Seasonic 3.3V 2A power supply inside of it with a bulging cap. This is a 120/240 input supply.
The bulging cap is a Nichicon HD(M) 6.3v 1500uF.
I thought Nichicon were good capacitors?
I tried supplying 3.3V from an ATX power supply to the power supply...Last edited by brianl703; 12-23-2007, 11:51 PM.
