• Re: Linux DVR Software?

PCBONEZ,

"Define 'high speed'. On large transfers most drives will max out at around 50-60 MB/sec"

That is fine with me.

At present with the SA 8300HD all I can do is "Real Time" using Video and Audio Out jacks which is a "Real Pain".

Hope you have tried something!

Thanks

started a topic Linux DVR Software?

Linux DVR Software?

Am trying to do my homework concerning building a DVR so need to first decide what Linux software to use (MythTV, Freevo, VDR, LinuxMCE,...)

Have been using a SA 8300HD with TW cable for >2yrs and my biggest complaint is the inability to do high speed HDD to HDD transfers for programs that I would like to archive.

Appreciate any suggestions from anyone who has actually done this.

Thanks

• Re: How to Inspect New Power Supply?

370forlife and zandrax,

Thank you both for the tips!!!

zandrax As Newbie took a while concerning pfc. I read a very good summary at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_factor_correction am guessing that it is best to have active pfc.

• How to Inspect New Power Supply?

Am trying to do my homework concerning new power supply(PSU) purchases.

Among things I have learned so far is that you can Not just buy a "Brand Name PSU" but must do your homework so now check the reviews and a "LifeTime PSU Warranty" is only as good as the company that gives it.

Have found a number of inexpensive PSUs (on sale) that seem more than adequate from the mfrs specs but no independent or even buyers reviews.

As a Newbie in this area, any tips on inspecting a new PSU so not to void the store return policy or mfr warranty?...

Question concerning reading reviews. How would you rate the recent BeHardware? http://www.behardware.com/articles/734-1/product-survey-7-power-supplies-for-less-than-45-euros.html

Mentioned in my first post "Would like to get one with lifetime warranty but have not seen this for a while"

The only "lifetime warranty power supply" I have seen was the Ultra 500 Watt
just did a quick search on the website and found "Ultra Advantage Extend Your Warranty!
Register your product and receive up to a LIFETIME Warranty."

Seems they have a LifeTime Series of PSUs. http://www.ultraproducts.com/product_details.php?cPath=103&pPath=653&productID=653...

Thanks for your suggestions concerning the other PSUs!

i4004 and PCBONEZ,

Thanks for the fortron tip!

Did some searching and found http://www.fsp-group.com/ and even better http://www.fspgroupusa.com/PC_OEM/fsppcoem.asp under tech data there is no mention of caps mfr (have never yet seen this info for any mfr). So how do I find this info?

Checked NewEgg for Fortron models and counted ~26 for desktop PCs. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Description=fortron&x=13&y=30&Page=1...

Was reading hardware reviews and saw Toms listed Antec NeoPower 650W for both the recent $650 Gaming PC and the $1,250 Enthusiast PC. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/cpu-graphics-overclocking,2085.html

Did some quick searching and found it for $89.99 at http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=Antec+NeoPower+650W+&x=12&y=29

Did some price comparison and this price seems at or close to current low.

• Best Buy Power Supplies?

Am looking for reliable inexpensive/bargain power supplies. At this time > 300 Watts for older P2 to P4 PCs. Not super high power just average.

Would like to get one with lifetime warranty but have not seen this for a while.

Would like to pay as little as possible which means purchasing when are being phased out. Usually watch the sales on NewEgg and other Internet sites.

Did some searching concerning "best computer power supplies" and bounced these names off more experienced individuals and was told that many of these better mfrs have...

• Re: Best Tualatin Socket 370 Motherboard?

Wizard,

I have found it easier to get the "whole PCs" because as mentioned these old P3 PCs are obsolete to most people so are available at yard sales for very little or are being thrown out for nothing.

• Re: Best Tualatin Socket 370 Motherboard?

Scenic,

Thanks for the ECS P6S5AT tip. Am guessing with the original bad caps there are a few dead ones around.

Did a quick search and found this on eBAY. http://cgi.ebay.com/ECS-P6S5AT-Socket-370-SDM-MB-Refurbished_W0QQitemZ120326999435QQcmdZViewItem

Checked the store "Clearance outlet of one of the largest computer components distributor in US. Specialize in all optical and hard drives, motherboards, etc." Took a quick look and all the mobos I saw were "Refurbished"...

• Re: Best Tualatin Socket 370 Motherboard?

Wizard,

Thanks for the Asus TUSL2-C tip.

Have started to search and have these questions using a P3 1.4 GHZ cpu.

1. Will only the Asus model TUSL2-C work or can the CUSL2-C and possibily other versions also work if update the BIOS? Thought I read somewhere for some mobo mfrs that if update an older BIOS that the Tualatin CPUs would work with older mobos (think it was a HP OEM TriGem mobo)

2. Do you know of any OEM mfrs like HP that used the Asus TUSL2-C? Did a quick search using...

Thanks Everyone for your comments!

The P3 Tualatin CPU is from the Compaq Presario 4409CL I posted https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=986

I recently looked very closely at the its mobo but could not see any noticeable damage so hope the CPU is working. Am guessing it is a std not S model but have not even taken the heat sink off. Wanted to keep everything together until find a working mobo for it.

Am looking for a 1 CPU mobo and the rebuilt PC would be used for word processing...

• Best Tualatin Socket 370 Motherboard?

Oct 05 I received a nonworking Compaq Presario 4409CL. Close inspection revealed liquid on some of the caps but no bulging as with my recent ECS motherboard.

Did a quick check of the power supply and it seemed OK. Even tried a working one with same result no boot.

At this time I searched if anyone else had posted the same problems with this Loretto (OEM of Lite-On TR 100) motherboard but found nothing.

Since then I have tested the memory, CD, Floppy and Hard Drives in working PCs and all work fine.

Have not tested the Celeron P3 1.4 GHz...

• Re: Mystery ECS Motherboard?

i4004,

Should have addressed this subject in my first post.

To answer your question "i don't get this thread; why do you need to know what mobo is it? fix those caps and run it, and then you'll know."

I would like to determine if this ECS mobo is worth repairing by checking if it has in addition to the bad caps any other "weak components" or problems.
