Trying to figure out if it is better to just replace the thermal pads or use a copper shim. I would assume that the copper shim is better but if you have to use a couple layers of thermal compound is that going to make the thermal pads the way to go?
Also, does anyone know a few really easy fan mods/ fan control programs? What should my fan be set at to make sure my GPU/CPU do not overheat?
What is the best mod for laptop RAM and laptop hard drives to keep them cool? Any ideas??
Would really appreciate the help!!!!!!!!!!

Red glue around the GPU
Is the red glue around the GPU removable? Also, can you replace it if removed? Do you need to remove it to do a successful reflow?

Do you need schematics/data sheets/ect?
I am starting to get the hang of using a multimeter..
But what I am having trouble comprehending is do I look for patterns in devices or do I have to focus on specific readings..
for example, if I test a capacitor and it should charge and discharge so the number should fluctuate, but should I be paying attention to the number??
Do I need schematics and such to troubleshoot or can I do without them?
And is a 1 always an open circuit and 0 always a short?

Re: Troubleshooting "no power"
Those seem awesome, but are those going to work for a board that is not getting power at all?...

Troubleshooting "no power"
I have a lot of boards that either get no power or will get power but will not boot to BIOS. The fans just spin for a second...
I bought an ESR meter... but I do not know how to test the various chips and I have a hard time identifying them...
Anyone know where to start with testings?
What to test?
How to ID the chip/module/component?
How to test it?
You would be my hero if you could break this down for me!

Instantly shuts off when playing DVD (laptop)
My laptop will instantly shut down when I try and play a DVD or when I got into personalize settings and try to "preview" the bubble screen saver..
Any ideas on what may be causing this? It will stay on forever and play youtube videos but the second I use either of those functions it powers down..

Re: Empty Solder Hole?? Why?
I think it's actually a chip, probably a power regulating chip of some sort. but any component that has a leg coming through the board should have solder to fill it yeah?...

Empty Solder Hole?? Why?
I have a power board for a flatron LG monitor
One side of the board has a chip that is completely missing solder from the through hole..
Could this be correct? Or should I fill it with solder and see if that fixes the issue..

A troubleshooting checklist?? what to look at first?
I have a laptop that wont turn on. In fact I have a lot of laptops that wont turn on.. I figured it was some bad caps..
But where do you start? What are the easy "lets see if this works" attempts to repair the problem..
I just do not know where to start...
I have one motherboard that has what appears to be one tiny bad cap (the little square guys) and I wonder if I should even try to replace it.. could that prevent a whole board from powering? I have another board that has a bunch of little capacitors that seem to be going bad.. and it makes...

Re: Little tiny cap desoldering / testing
Thanks so much
but could you elaborate on what I should be looking for with the multimeter? What should the multimeter read?
Also, what happens if I rip the pads off the motherabord / capacitor? is there anyway to fix that?...

Testing traces / repairing them
Is there anyway to test the traces on the motherboard and what is the best way to repair them?
Thanks!

Little tiny cap desoldering / testing
Hey everyone
I have an ESR meter and a rework station...
It seems as thought I get weird readings from the tiny capacitors (the one's the size of a flea poop).
Will a standard ESR meter be able to measure those sort of capacitors? If not how do you test them?
Also, what is the best way to desolder them?

How to identify proper replacements
I have a motherboard with what I assume are bad ceramic caps (the little square guys).. I will have to take them out of circuit to be sure, but I do not know how to tell what to replace them with.
There is nothing written on the cap like the regular capacitors so do I just go by size?
I have a hotair rework / soldering station.. but any tips to removing the little guys and re-soldering one back onto the board???
Really appreciate any help here!
Thanks!!

How to test power regulators?
I want to make sure the phases on the board are functioning properly.
Does anyone know how to test if the power regulators are functioning correctly? What do I use to test them?
And if one is bad is there a certain way I have to desolder it?
Also, a little off topic but does anyone have recommendations on what flux, solder, and flux remover (motherboard cleaner) to use??? There are so many out there and tons of random sellers selling unmarked jars (of flux and flux cleaner) of the stuff on ebay I was not sure what I should be investing in.

Draining caps
Can you drain caps in-circuit (for testing purposes)
How do you drain them safetly?
Do you have the drain the ceramic capacitors (small square cap's)

new to the game and need some advice
Hey everyone!
quick intro: been wandering the web for answers to various questions and i always end up at this site. So i decided to finally sign up and join the fun!
Just started getting serious into motherboard repair. I bought a ESR meter, and a hotair rework station. However I am slightly confused on a few things...
first, is what exactly can the ESR accurately test? Can I just use it on capacitors or can I use it on other components as well?
What is the "right" way to use the meter. For the smaller caps on the board...
