• Re: Hanns-G HG281D, LCD Monitor no power

My capacitors, lead free solder (0.8mm) and lead free copper braid (2.8mm) arrived yesterday from Farnell and with the excitement of a young kid I set about de-soldering a capacitor of a dud PCB board using my 25W Antex soldering iron.

For the first step I attempted to tin the tip of the iron. My iron eventually got hot enough to melt the lead free solder but, unlike the Youtube videos, it only flowed off the iron in small balls. So I used a wired pad, from the wash basin, to scrape the black gunge from the iron...

I'm thinking of prurchasing the following items of Solder, De-Solder Braid and Clamp Tool.

Any views on these, pros and cons?

My Logic Board doesn't state it is RoHS compliant but I have chosen the Solder and De-Solder Braid which are RoHS compliant as well as No SVHC.

I'm intending to use my Antex 25 Watts Soldering iron to de-solder and solder (reference Post#300).

Is the Clamp Tool, which is supposed to act like a Third Hand, of any use? Or am I just wasting money purchasing...

If you can direct to where the heatsink is on the Board from post#287 (is it the large aluminium like structure with holes on the left side of the Board) I can possibly have a go at looking at the relevant capacitor/s.

The Power Supply Board details (taken from the top left corner of the board) are:
Model: PSM217-404--H-R
Rev: A1

If I'm not mistaken at looking at the correct capacitors, they are:

2.2uF, 50V (at the bottom edge, left of the board)

1uF...

I think most of the posts on this forum are indicating that if you have a CapXon capacitor (be it on the Power board or the Logic board) then replace them first as they are one of the worst, if not the worst, makers of capacitors.

Their Caps do NOT have "low ESR" or "low impedance" - this can be evidenced by the missing ESR values in their datasheets.Re: Hanns-G HG281D, LCD Monitor no power

So the Voltage quoted on a Capacitor i.e. say 16V, is that 16V SV or 16V WV?

I assume it's WV....

In the attached datasheets what do WV and SV stand for?

I assume "V" stands for Volts.

What do "S" and "W" stand for?

Thanks....

Is there an alternative Part No to EEAGA1C100 as Farnell are out of Stock on this item and will not be re-stocked until Sept 2012....

Where on the board would it say RoSH? I can't seem to find it written anywhere on my Logic board.

What is 60/40? Is this a percentage mix of two composites?...

My parts at digikey come to around £4.50 (or thereabouts), but there is whopping £12 p&p charge, unless I buy goods exceeding £50 in value, in which case shipping is free....

Do we know if the solder on the Logic board is lead free or leaded?

I've been advised that it's most likely leaded and thus I should stick to leaded solder....

My son pointed out to me that we had a soldering iron. It is an Antex 25 Watts which I picked up for £5 from a local General DIY store not so long ago.

Attached are the JPGs.

Some questions:
(1) Is the wattage sufficient for it ot do the work that is required on the PCB i.e. de-solder and re-solder the CAPS; and

(2) Is the tip of sufficient shape and dimensions for it to be used for de-soldering and re-soldering work on a PCB?

Thanks....

I'll stick with the Panasonic Caps, given they are highly reputable on this Forum.

Can anyone advise me the best place to source these components, which is cost effective price wise and delivery wise?

Thank you....

I will report back but it may be a while because:

(i) I'll need to source the components from a UK supplier (never sourced electronic components before, so this will be a new experience)
(ii) Will need to acquire a good soldering iron (again never done that before)
(iii) Will need to learn the art of de-soldering from a PCB and re-soldering onto a PCB (never done that before)

All in all a challenge for me, but one I'm keen to attempt....

There are actually 20 caps (7 + 13) and they are:

10uF, 16V, ~4mm dia. ST series (12 off)
100uF, 16V, ~6.5mm dia. ST series (3 off)
100uF, 16V, ~4mm dia, ~10mm tall, KM series (2 off)
470uF, 16V, ~6.5mm dia., ~12mm tall KM series (3 off)

Thanks, once again, for your time and effort....

Presumably you're referring to the 7 electrolytic caps clustered around V33S and V18S on the Logic Board? You'd like me to me to change these for the time being and NOT the others. There are 13 in total on the Logic Board.

Impressed by your recognition that they were CapXon from the aerial view of the shots. I suppose that's experience for you.

The specifications on Caps say they are:

10uF, 16V (~4mm dia) 5 off
100uF, 16V (~6.5mm dia) 2off

Anything else I need to specify...

Here's my latest attempt at the photos, which were taken this evening (when the natural light was at its low) using MACRO mode. If they still require further improvement I could do this tomorrow morning in early morning sunlight (assuming it's sunny) in MACRO mode.

The first batch are for the Power Board.

JPG4 == Top Left of PCB
JPG5 == Bottom Left of PCB
JPG6 == Bottom Right of PCB
JPG7 == Top Right of PCB

I see now what you mean by T vent - the Caps have the letter...
