Re: Gateway (MPC) E4620
I do not know your computer background so I will ask - - have you taken all the steps to rule out other possible causes such as:
disk drive
memory
power supply
optical drives
card readers
keyboard
mouse
I have seen each of the above cause a computer to not post and restart. My own family PC did this last week when one of the optical drives failed. It would not post anything.

Re: Gateway (MPC) E4620
I never received a reply to my e-mail message so I had to buy elsewhere.

Re: need advice on desoldering tool
That is how I would do it too. I became confused when I read of others cutting the capacitor's case off the leads. This seemed to be very difficult when the capacitor is mounted with the case contacting the PCB....

Re: Low ESR capacitors
Thanks momaka. Your excellent explanation confirmed my suspicion about the term "Low ESR" not being a standard.
I was in engineering school and building audio amplifiers and power inverters around 1978. I know semiconductors have changed since then but our general rule was to use wet electrolytic capacitors twice the working voltage as this had the most influence on service life if the temperature was the same. The other part of that rule is to increase the capacitance about 20% because the rated capacitance is observed at the working...

Re: Low ESR capacitors
Thanks tom66. Although I understand what ESR is, you gave a good explanation and it is important for others. The reason I asked is I noticed that some capacitors not labeled as ESR on the OEM website have lower ESR than other brand capacitors marketed as low-ESR capacitors. This led me to think that the term low-ESR is only relevant within a given brand.
I also noticed that a regular 10V capacitor often has a lower ESR than a 6V low-ESR capacitor. I looked at a 61-page resistor & capacitor catalog by NTE and the term "ESR"...

Low ESR capacitors
What is the definition of a capacitor with low ESR?
Is there a standard are is it only meaningful within a specific brand?
I searched on the Internet for a while and did not find this info. When I built circuits in electronics lab in the 1970's, there was not the wide selection that we have today so ESR was not readily available.

Re: need advice on desoldering tool
Thanks retiredcaps!
I can see how the ridges of the bobby pin would help hold the solder for removal. Do you push the old capacitor lead lead through the hole with the SS bobby pin?

need advice on desoldering tool
I need to recap 4 motherboards but have no desoldering equipment other than bulb, hand vacuum pump pencil, wick, and a few cheap soldering irons. I found the following on ebay but have no idea which would be better. Anything over $90 is out of the question for me now. If neither of these is better than the cheap manual method I now have, tell me that too. Thanks in advance for your help.
Hakko Ace Model #481 Desoldering Tool
PACE PPS-5 Soldering/Desoldering Station with gun (obviously old)

Re: Gateway (MPC) E4620
I have 4 Gateway E-4620S systems that start for about 4 seconds then turn off. I can tell that two of them have swollen capacitors - especially the 1800uF one near the memory slots under the optical drive.
It appears that they all have ECS motherboards marked Q35T-GB v1.1
I sent an e-mail message to admin@badcaps.net to check on a capacitor kit for this board. I have not replaced capacitors on a motherboard before but it looks like this is a good reason to do it.Re: Gateway (MPC) E4620
I have 4 Gateway
