I just picked up one of the sets from the recycling center in my town. I bet when I open it up I'll find the same exact failure. Wonder how many of these have been tossed from the two Wal-Marts in my area. This just kind of confirms my wife's theory that Wal-Mart tends to sale off sub-standard electronics.
