  • Re: Dell 3008wfp faulty power supply

If you haven't done so already just double check that all the connectors are plugged in. I had to disassemble twice as I had forgotten to re-connect some connectors. There are quite a few to remember. I hope this is the case for your sake. It's been a marathon so we are all cheering you on to the finish line.

I'm glad you got it apart yourself. Reading step 7 now, after several months, is definitely no longer clear to myself without having the monitor half pulled apart again. And that is something I'm not keen on doing again.

If the diode has not failed open circuited (high current) then you probably won't see if the diode is failing short circuited with a multimeter. I am assuming previous failure of D22 on other monitors in this thread was a sort circuit at operation voltage without causing the diode to fail permanently in an open circuit state (both directions). Maybe the other members who have removed their faulty Schottky Diode can report on the state of the diode with a multimeter?

I'd would start by replacing D22. Did the power light at the front...

It's good to hear someone else has now managed to fix their 30" monitor. Definitely not cheap to replace in a hurry.

Sounds like D22 is a weak link in the design. Probably more and more 3008WDP owners will wake up to a heavy paper weight over the next year or so. Hopefully they'll find this thread also.

  • Re: Dell 3008wfp faulty power supply

My problematic monitor is now working with no issues since I've connected my new desktop to it through the same video header (Display Port). Previously I was using a HP ProBook 6540b which at the time of purchase was one of few laptops with a DisplayPort. I bought this monitor 3 and half years ago in anticipation for a new desktop. I was getting worried that it wasn't going to last the wait of my new PC desktop. All happy days now. Is it possible that the laptop was driving the monitor to hard??

  • Re: Rectifier Input Range

So an expensive On-line UPS for clean power may be a bit of an overkill if I'm purchasing devices with very high quality switch mode power supplies. The efficiency of an on-line UPS is a killer. I remember protecting all my equipment on the power side of things to have a lot of it damaged through the CAT5 cabling via the Ethernet switch which in-turn was connected to my ADSL modem which was in-turn connected to my phone line - Ouch.

I'm probably going away from my original topic but the concern for my equipment was the driver for my original...

That's exactly what I've experienced. I was getting the cheapest CFLs I could find which were still $5 a pop but a lot of them were only lasting weeks....

  • Re: Rectifier Input Range

    Thanks Marisushm,

The EMI hypothesis sounds plausible for the specifications put on the label. I'm assuming the rectifier diodes would also have a rating well over the peak voltage of 367 Volts as is the smoothing capacitor (400-450 Volts).

Sounds like I'd need well over 240 Vac before damage may occur. About 5 years ago under voltage was the issue at my house (I've got a 300m main supply cable run). But at some point the main line voltage has increased to the point that I'm getting 260V when I'm not pulling too much current. So...

  • Rectifier Input Range

    Hi Badcap members.

This is a question on switch mode power supplies found in household appliances such as TVs, monitors and computers and the possible problems of sustained over voltage conditions on the rectifier. I have read the FAQ on switch mode power supplies which talks a bout selectable voltage inputs and the affects of connecting 240Vac when selected for 115Vac. But this question is on self sensing switch mode power supplies.

I live in Australia which has a nominal line voltage of 240Vac at 50 Hz. My house utilizes 3 phases with one phase a few volts higher...

  • Re: Dell 3008wfp faulty power supply

I managed to disassemble my Dell 3008wfp. The power supply circuit looked in very good order with all nichicon (125 degree celcius) capacitors looking healthy. I'll need to invest in an ESR meter to check further.

For future reference these are the steps that I followed to disassemble this monitor:

    1. Disconnected the monitor from mains and PC and relocate it to a very well lit area.

    2. Using a credit card with one edge sharpened, part the top of the bezel from the black center plastic divider.

    Thanks Jasgriff,

This monitor has always ran hotter than I had liked. To me it produces similar amounts of heat as you see with plasma TVs. I've got a 40W analogue soldering iron that I pull out on really rare occasions. I'm mainly dreading the removal of the back cover from the front bezel - lots of patience. ANZAC Day here in Australia tomorrow so I should find the time to concentrate on the feat.

  • Re: Dell 3008wfp faulty power supply

    Hi all,

I seemed to have missed the era of bad caps - I was happily doing a lot of solo travelling from 2002 to 2007. In 2008 I bought this amazing monitor - the DELL 2008wfp. Four years on it is still working but I suspect an imminent demise to the power supply. It doesn't seem to be D22 as discussed in this thread as the monitor is still functioning. Here are the symptoms my monitor is displaying:

    1. For a few weeks now the monitor's power supply has been making a whirring noise like a fan with shot bearings or...
