• Re: Introducing CapRep
Cool. Good to see this project is still alive. Keeps us updated how it goes. I think once the fews stuff that I mentioned in my previous post are worked out, this might become a very handy tool for people who don't know where to start when it comes to finding capacitor replacements./QUOTE]

Hi, momaka

Whenever I have a board to recap, I use my own website. If it returns no results, I find caps that match and then add that series so there is still much to do and I hope it proves to be invaluable to everyone. I haven't...

• CapRep has moved!

If anyone cares... CapRep has moved!

I have decided to move CapRep to a paid-hosting service for a few reasons. The new URL is shedhead-projects.co.za/caprep.

Also, having recently completed my Masters degree, I hope to have a little more time for working on the site and adding more capacitors to the database.

Yeah, I was very cautious around it and definitely didn't play with the beam. It's a Class 3B.

As for the 4W laser, it requires water cooling and the power supply is 10kW. Yes... These krypton ion lasers are at most 0.04% efficient, apparently! I want to at least power up the unit to get the run time from it, but I worry that the inrush current alone will trip breakers and melt switches. >.<

I dare not power up the 4W laser for fear of destroying my eyesight, and my house's wiring.

Hi momaka,

Thank you very much for your reply! I too am surprised it took as long as it did.

Indeed, the database unfortunately is still very small (601 caps as of this post) so there won't be very good matches for all situations. My main focus now is expanding the database with the goal to add an entire series every day (of the smaller series) as well as some from the larger series.

I had also thought about adding a range to the ripple criterion. Something like values >= (input...

Introducing CapRep

Good day, all

I would like to take this opportunity to (nervously) introduce a project on which I have been working: CapRep (Open to suggestions for a better name).

What is CapRep?
Finding a suitable replacement capacitor involves looking up the specifications of the existing caps and then (for me, at least) trawling through datasheets of "good caps" to find a suitable match. For this reason, I created CapRep (Capacitor Replacer). CapRep...

• Foxconn WinFast 6100K8MA recapping advice

I have a WinFast 6100K8MA motherboard about which I'd like some advice regarding the capacitors. The list of existing caps are as follows:
5x 3300uF 6.3v OST RLX
4x 1500uF 16v UCC KZG
2x 1000uF 10v Teapo SEK
8x 1000uF 6.3v Teapo SEK
9x 1000uF 6.3v OST RLX
1x 470uF 16v Teapo SEK
4x 100uF 16v Teapo SEK

Firstly, the two 10v Teapos only have 5v across them. So they can be grouped under the same capacitors as the 1000uF 6.3v Teapo caps, right?

Secondly, is there a difference between the OST and Teapo 1000uF caps? I know...

Thanks, Per Hansson. I'll replace those caps too and see if there is an improvement.

Hi, c_hegge,

I did replace all the large caps, however, there are still a few 10uF/22uF caps dotted around the board that I haven't replaced yet. It has been suggested to me that these might be causing some issues for the board. I shall replace them as well and see if it improves.

• Re: Lex Computech CV860A recapping

Ok, so upon further testing the board isn't quite as it should be. It will only boot up if it's being turned on from a completely off state. If it's turned on from a soft power off state then it won't boot. After a few power cycles it just won't boot at all, no matter what.

Another issue is that an inductor in the power supply region gets hot... Up to 50C. And that's just standby usage. Pretty sure that's not supposed to happen.

The caps right next to the CPU get warmer than surrounding temperatures. Not worringly warm,...

• Re: Rubycon date codes?

I purchased the caps from egekecu who seems to be a trusted seller according to some on this forum. However, the computer for which I purchased these caps doesn't quite work as well as I think it should. So either the caps are a bit not-as-great-as-they-should-be, or there are other things to fix on the board.

I think my next purchase of capacitors will be from a reputable supplier.

• Re: Lex Computech CV860A recapping

After many months, I have been able to order replacement caps and today I recapped both of my CV860A's.

The first one worked for a bit without any RAM. It beeped at me which is more than it has ever done. So I stuck in some RAM but thereafter it stopped doing anything. Now it doesn't even turn on. I may have damaged the board from desoldering.

The second board beeped at me without any RAM as well. So once again the real test... Stuck in some RAM and powered it on. Lo and behold... It booted up without any...

Hi, mariushm. Thank you for your response.

I have attached another photo of the tops of the caps. They have 'K's... but the one doesn't look as legit as the other. I wouldn't be surprised if they are fake .

I may just take you up on your offer. Shipping cost isn't a major issue but I would like to keep it as low as possible.

• Rubycon date codes?

Hey all.

So finally I am able to purchase items off eBay with my PayPal account. I ordered some Rubycon capacitors to get started on recapping the vast piles of computers I have lying around.

I ordered some MBZ and YXG series caps. I know the MBZ series is discontinued and only realised that after the items had shipped that they'll be old stock. But, and if I am correct, I didn't know they'd be about about 6 years old! And 7 years old for the YXG series (see attachment). Does that still make them OK to use?

• Re: Lex Computech CV860A recapping

Hi, Ray,

Thank you for your interest. Unfortunately, I haven't gotten round to ordering any caps as of yet. I have some 20+ computers that need recapping and am thus building up my complete list before ordering. But I am putting this board at the top of my list and am going to get it repaired as soon as possible. I hope to order the caps before the weekend and get back to you as soon as possible.

Also, what should I do about the Evercons, anyone? I'm going to use the Teapo replacements in their place as I guess they...

• Lex Computech CV860A recapping

After recently acquiring 12 scrap computers, most of which require recapping, interest has been renewed in this board that I acquired in late 2009. A friend of mine got two of them from his place of work. Neither of them boot at all. The only thing that happens is a single 'click' from the onboard speaker and that's it. I remember back then that I heard a very faint 'whistling' noise coming from the board. The row of Teapo capacitors next to the CPU are bulging, a dead giveaway. I've decided to replace all the larger sized caps as they are a collection of Teapo and Evercon. The smaller 10uF, 22uF,...

• Abit BP6 Leaking and Bulging Caps

One or more of the labs at my university threw out discontinued equipment, and amongst the pile was this Abit BP6. Got it home and spotted the problem caps straight away.

I started to desolder some of these pathetic Tayeh caps and this is what the worst one looks like underneath. The rest are just bulging slightly.

I've read the Abit BP6 recapping thread posted by Topcat and want to replace the caps with these modded values. What rated rippled current and ESR value must I look for? Or...

• MSI 915PL Neo KZG bulging cap

The story:
So one of the labs at my university was throwing out discontinued equipment, and amongst the stuff were a few computers. One of them was this MSI 915PL Neo motherboard. For me, this motherboard has two firsts: PCIe and Intel 64 on a desktop board. Free from the dumpster! Anyway, I powered it up and it worked! Great! But I realised that just because it POSTed doesn't mean it's stable, so I slapped in a hard drive and installed Windows XP. It randomly restarted during the install and that was my first sign of issues, but I couldnt see any obviously visual capacitor problems. So...
