  • Re: I am in Emachines and Compaq hell. Help me get out

Wow! I guess E would be my last choice on a new computer. Short of becoming a DIY computer builder, is there any hope for a good generic Computer at all? My husband says Compaq (now HP) is supposedly highly improved but I'm not willing to trust his opinion after my last hellish adventure with Compaq (now a "Frankenstein" - after PSU, CD, + floppy failure). Dell seems to suck as well. Any suggestions for which one of the biggie computer MF-ers Santa should bring me?

Finally, I am back on course.

Thank you so much for your help! My solder iron worked just fine and I feel I can get the the recapping job done just as soon as I can afford to get the caps from you folks.

Here is an update of my progress so far, thanks to MixMasta and Maxxarcade.

I decided to give the Compaq one more chance with a lengthy (like overnight, instead of the 10 minute standard) Bios reset by removing 3V battery, which measured 3.06V. next morning put brand spankin' new 2032 measuring 3.33 V. AND VOILA, the Compaq has been resurrected from the dead. I'm used to replacing this battery but on this oldy but goody computer, apparently, it wanted a little longer rest to clear the BIOS and a new 3V. Interesting,...

Didn't know about clearing bios/cmos fix, but oddly enough, found out before your post how to do it safely, and voila, this solved the Emachines 466i POST problem and it is now back on line. The hard power failure must have somehow glitched it. It did decide to do a "small memory dump" right off the bat tho' but has been solid after that for about 3 hours.

However, this reset bios did nothing for the Compaq. It still will not POST at all, but HD spins and I can power it off normally.

    At least,...

  • I am in Emachines and Compaq hell. Help me get out

Hello to all you wonderful techies. This is my first time ever posting on a forum, but this site has given me a glimmer of hope. Could I be suffering from the bad caps plague? I have much experience soldering so if it is the caps, I might elect to DIY; you make it sound so easy. Here is the sad story of "My 3 computers". I'll make it as brief as possible. All were purchased used.

1)Compaq 5202, had several near death experiences, and currently will not POST at all. The HD is okay, but on power up there is no logo screen, Monitor goes to the amber led mode, HD starts to...
