Re: Broke my GTX 470, need help identifying replacement cap
Update: Put the SMD components back on the card. Strapped the Antec 620 directly to the gpu die, and it's working fine. Temps are down 7C, and I have a couple extra precious millimeters of space between my cards, so they're exerting much less pressure on each other now.
But it can't be that easy. Ever since I fired up the pump, I noticed a clicking noise. It is the impeller hitting the wall, or something like that. A magnet held up to the pump fixes the problem, but it has to stay there, and I don't like keeping...

Re: Broke my GTX 470, need help identifying replacement cap
That's a good question. And yeah, I think it's an ingenious idea.. A watercooling solution for 60 bucks? Heck yeah. I'm using the ziptie method and honestly it works great. Plus, removing the IHS will give me a precious couple millimeters of space that will help reduce the tension between the two cards. Not that it's terrible, but it will be nice to have them a little further apart.
As far as the mounting goes, you have to make a custom bracket if you want to actually screw it onto the gpu....Last edited by lukeman3000; 02-16-2012, 06:33 PM.

Re: Broke my GTX 470, need help identifying replacement cap
I'm not exactly sure what you're saying, but the Antec 620 will be in direct contact with the die. Both surfaces are (should be) flat, so it should make good contact. Others on OCN have done this, and have reported significantly lower temps after running for several hours, seemingly with no problems.
The only concern that I'm aware of is to make sure that the copper surface of the Antec 620 doesn't touch the resistors when the card is on, because it could short them out. But...

Re: Broke my GTX 470, need help identifying replacement cap
So, I just removed the IHS from my gtx 470. I have a fear that I may have damaged something. If you look in the lower-right corner of the chip (not the die, but the green area that the die rests on), you will notice a little scratch. I can see a little bit of what looks like copper in that scratch. It doesn't look very deep, but still, it worries me. Did I just kill my chip? I thought I did everything pretty much right; I followed the instructions and didn't put the blade in too far, and then I bent it up and the IHS simply...

Re: Broke my GTX 470, need help identifying replacement cap
Well, I decided not to remove the IHS. However, I did attempt to lap it with it still on the pcb. I thought I did a fairly decent job (although the corners are slightly lower than the rest of the IHS for some reason), but during the process I must've nicked a couple of the pcb components.
Yes, I am a moron. First a capacitor, and now this, whatever it is. You see the smd component that is kind of crooked (right under the hole)? Well I must've nicked that one too. But directly to the left, one...Last edited by lukeman3000; 02-14-2012, 01:28 AM.

Re: Broke my GTX 470, need help identifying replacement cap
Why do you think that I might not be able to do it? I've seen others do it with similar GPUs..
Are you speaking to the level of difficulty in successfully completing this without ruining something, or the fact that I may not be able to make contact with the die without touch other components on the pcb? I'm pretty sure the die is raised high enough of the pcb so that this wouldn't happen, and the cooler head is flat with no standoffs....

Re: Broke my GTX 470, need help identifying replacement cap
Why is there a space between the top of the die and the bottom of the IHS? Someone on the overclock.net forums hypothesized that it was a manufacturing tolerance issue, that the gap was there to ensure the safety of the die or something like that.
Is this legit, or is there another reason for the space? As far as you know, am I safe to do this and to strap the antec 620 cooler directly to the die?...

Re: Broke my GTX 470, need help identifying replacement cap
No, I haven't. I'm guessing that it didn't go well?
There are threads about removing the IHS.. people have done it and they have documented it with pictures. Here's one.
As far as the height discrepancy goes, I don't think people are compensating for it. I think they're putting the cooler directly on it. I have read that there should be no negative consequences of this,...

Re: Broke my GTX 470, need help identifying replacement cap
That iron has to get hot as hell. I had never seen a soldering iron actively smoke, which is what mine was doing at 50 watts. It wasn't pouring out plumes of it, but you could see a little trail.
I went with this one.
Thanks again for all the help guys, I couldn't have done it without you. At least, not so easily. This was actually a really simple job -- the trick was knowing the right...Last edited by lukeman3000; 02-13-2012, 04:21 AM.

Re: Broke my GTX 470, need help identifying replacement cap
I received the capacitor from Newark today and installed it.
I encountered an issue at the beginning when trying to remove the old leads that were still in the board. I couldn't seem to make the solder flow. I was using a 30 watt iron.
I went up to radio shack and bought the hottest one they had - a 50 watt. I had read online that typically you want a 40-60 watt iron when working with pcbs (although I don't know how true this is).
Irregardless, I was able to get it done with the 50...

What about either of these?

I'm in the USA.
Edit: I just checked that mouser link -- those bad boys are out of stock with a factory lead time of 18 weeks..Last edited by lukeman3000; 02-05-2012, 05:38 AM.

I already ordered this one. Should it be ok? If not where can I get the one you linked to?Re: Broke my GTX 470, need help identifying replacement cap

Thank you so much for helping me and taking the time to reply.
Would you mind explaing what "VRM" and "Ultra-Low ESR" mean? Just to appease my curiosity. I have just enough knowledge to solder things, but I don't understand any electrical theory or anything like that. Haven't taken the time to learn it.
