  • Re: extreme measures

Greeting to all you who were so helpful in teaching me the basics as well as a few tricks here and there in recaping.

I just wanted to thank you guys for the help and all the advice which was excellent. Even though some of it was still over my head, I was able to learn by the stretch.

I just put up my first 2 boards and both posted and set up like they were new! Now I can start using my old RIMM 1066mhz modules again! I always liked those things.

    Thanks again!

Thanks everbody... I've really picked up a lot. It's a good thing I did take the advice and diagram the polarity. The first board I worked on the other day was an Asus and if I hadn't made a note of it, I probably would have put them in backward.

    I'll keep readin'

    Re: bios

    Thanks for the reply...

I really don't have anything against Dell in particular. This is just a used strip down computer that I happen to have and I'm scavenging the Motherboard that has a bunch of bad caps which I've replaced. It's 3 years old and a P4 so it's worth trying to fix up. Funny thing about it... From what I've read, it seems there are several caps on it that are not quite right... they're KZE's... kinda general usage... mostly for P2's and 3's but not P4's. I wonder why they put those on there? Anyway, they're gone.

    As far as the...

    started a topic bios

    bios

I have worked with computers for a while but there are some basic sometimes even simplistic things here and there that have escaped me along the way. I have never had an OEM computer; I always built my own so I've only updated the bios from whatever board company I had. Now I have this used board that comes from a Dell computer and would certainly like to remove all traces of Delldom from it. My question: Do you have to use the origional bios or can I put in another? Do you need to pull the chip??? Reading around, I haven't quite picked up on those basics.

    I'd appreciate some insights!...

Thanks guys... I got a lot of good info here.

I changed to good old 60/40 and ran the needle method again and voila! it went right through. I thought I was being cool by using 60/38/2 where 2 is silver which is supposd to be stronger, and a better conductor. The problem I suppose is that it is harder to heat and is also harder when cool. Maybe it's good for attaching but not removing??? Don't know...

question... is there a way to make a basic check on the new caps connection to the board before setting up to the power supply? Playing...

Here's another stupid question... I have had what seems to be pretty good success removing and putting in caps on my practice board. Now, on my 5th try I haven't been so lucky. Like usual, I remove the cap, then add solder to the back, heat it up and use a bulb sucker to clean it. After the second drag there still isn't a large enough hole for the cap so I went to the needle proceedure. I added solder heated it up agin and put the needle in and it won't go through very far. I didn't force it but tried the needle process again. No go. Now I'm a little worried. Tried it again and now things are...

    started a topic polyethylene????

    polyethylene????

Does anyone know if polyethylene is static safe enough for motherboard work? I was tinkering around with some ideas for making a cheep but useful motherboard holder for recaping. I have this polyethylene tubing used to insulate hot water pipes. It comes in tubes with a slit down it's length that snaps nicely over the pipe. It seems to me it could snap just as nicely around the edges of a motherboard to protect it while being held by whatever is being used to hold it up without getting in the way of the work... If it isn't a static hazard that is...

    any ideas?

    repair tool links

    Greetings...

I am impressed by the information on your forum. Cool! I have a couple of very nice old mobos just sittin around needing new caps and now they are gonna get them!

    Question...

Does anyone have any link suggestions were I can get a few basic tools for recapping that are not kits with a lot of stuff I dont need? Believe it or not, around my town I can't even find anti static stuff. I just need an iron, clippers, wrist band and maybe a couple of anti magnetic tools... that's all.

    Thanks....
