Re: Suspect Bad PS Apple AcBel API 1PC36
Re: #115 and #116
I am pleased to report that my AcBel (in Apple G4 MDD) is now working like a champ, mainly thanks to Toasty's tutoring style and expertise. The search tool is a friend, indeed. So is observation of previous sessions with other folks with similar hardware problems. However, my noobie path was perilous, even ridiculous at times.
I assembled a two-bulb parallel circuit to persuade the AcBel to start, forgetting that the PSU itself was one of the parallels in the circuit. I fastened the clips together...

Re: Power Mac G4 MDD "Mirror-Door" won't power up
agent24 and toasty
I assume you responded to message #73, my sly request for soldering tips. Your replies are most helpful and I learned more about equipment and temperatures. Actually, the job in #73 is after I reinstalled the heat sink. I started at the heat sink single post and my soldering got better as I went. This was done with my 30 watt famous brand iron. It takes awhile to heat up.
Some of the hacking came from the earlier desoldering, done mostly with the famous brand iron with the red...

I used a 100 watt bulb and will start stepping up the wattage (in parallel).
Thanks for the suggestion.

Re: Suspect Bad PS Apple AcBel API 1PC36
I replaced the 12 caps recommended in this thread as follows:
c7 (220/35), c8 (47/25), c10 (2200/16), c13 (2700/6.3), c16 and c29 (2200/6.3), c21 (3300/10), c35 (470/35), c41 (680/35), c43 (100/25) and c59-60 (1000/10).
The leads to the yellow box connect to the plug posts as do the brown and blue wires. I marked the color code on the components and re connected in the original pattern.
The light bulb test on the AcBel psu produced nothing but 4 bright blinks per second. I expected it to go bright,...

p.s.
I learned a little more "caps-speak" this a.m. So all you savvy and fluent caps-speakers know I bought UCC (495) series KY or KZE and Nichicon (493) series HE caps.

Re: Power Mac G4 MDD "Mirror-Door" won't power up
The attachment shows my first attempt at repairing anything electronic. It shows the "job" I did on the circuit. This is the mistake I am learning by.
I may have damaged a trace or let solder flow where it shouldn't, especially top center in the area of the single post of the heat sink and the pair of Mosfets. The board has a hacked at look, huh. I plan to pull another Samsung PSU as a guide to de-blobbing. Comments would be greatly appreciated....

Re: Suspect Bad PS Apple AcBel API 1PC36
These caps will arrive tomorrow and my AcBel is desoldered and ready to receive. This list was clipped out of the Digikey confirmation file and doesn't give the specs. I used this thread as a guide for cap specs and hope I got it right.

Re: Powerline Adapters
So Im living in a block of units so you're saying seems my next door neighbours power box is next time mine they can connect to me via power.[/QUOTE]
It depends on how your own circuits are set up. Sometimes, a circuit may be isolated. Sometimes, a circuit may link to another box.
If memory serves, I read this in a review of home wiring ethernet bridges somewhere. Since my understanding and memory of this are both fuzzy , I should have kept my mouth shut.
I side with the folks who recommend ethernet cable (but...

Re: Powerline Adapters
My first gen powerline/ethernet adapters served their purpose safely and worked in my home network. Mine were slow but faster than our local DSL.
You need a pair or more for home networks. I've used Tiger refurbs before with no problem. The price is right.
The older ethernet bridges were to be plugged in directly--not into a surge protector. The noise prevention caps (EM and RF) created a problem.
Every circuit may not communicate with every other circuit in the building and some of your circuits may communicate with a...

Re: Power Mac G4 MDD "Mirror-Door" won't power up
Sage advice from Toasty as usual.
This post is to avoid a penalty for unnecessary celebration in my previous post.
My project includes
3 - Apple p/n 614-0224 Samsung power supplies
1 - AcBel (see pic of label)
These units are in Apple Powermac G4 MDD machines

Re: Power Mac G4 MDD "Mirror-Door" won't power up
Toasty (and others)
Thanks for the help. I LIKE this forum!!
I've been hanging out here wondering if I could actually fix my power supplies. The helpful and well illustrated accounts of repairs got my courage up.
Yesterday I thought I had done in two Samsung PSUs. My wiseguy test lamp did a cute light routine (bright --> dim --> a few bright blinks --> off).
It did not light at all with the other Samsung I had worked on. So, given my winning streak,...

Re: Power Mac G4 MDD "Mirror-Door" won't power up
A belated "thank you" for this well-illustrated repair log.
I just finished "repairs" on two Samsung PSUs and broke the wires on the 4th component from the left in the first IMG (the blue disc in shrink-wrap).
I think, with the help of "wiki," it is a MOV (in LF2, next to and at 90ยบ to TH2). The lettering says:
JEC
JD47 2M V1
250V 400V X1
400V Y1
The shrink-wrap in Keith's picture says...
