Re: Toshiba Satellite - Locks up when plugged in
No one seems to have tried replacing those small caps so we do not know for sure what the problem is. Someone needs to take up the challenge, which would also help others with similar issues....

Re: Toshiba Satellite - Locks up when plugged in
Yes, I had checked that through the ebay site mentioned above. Their prices on their own site are lower ($1.29 per cap) than what they are offering on ebay but I did not find the cheaper shipping option. May be you can see that option if you access their site from the US. Also, the manufacturing code suggests that the caps were probably manufactured in July 2007 but I am not sure if that would have any significant impact on their quality now....

Re: Toshiba Satellite - Locks up when plugged in
The ebay link provided above by LuSiD seems the cheapest, especially if the extra ones can be shared with someone here. A costlier option is to choose suitable caps from: http://au.mouser.com/Passive-Components/Capacitors/Tantalum-Capacitors/Tantalum-Capacitors-Polymer-SMD/_/N-75hr2?P=1z0t6f6Z1z0t6euZ1z0t6et&Keyword=t520v337&FS=True . Within US the shipping is probably $4.99.Re: Toshiba Satellite - Locks up whe...by LuSiD seems...

Re: Toshiba Satellite - Locks up when plugged in
Looks like you were trying to disable cores in the BIOS. Try disabling them in the Device Manager as mentioned in my previous post. The former method seriously affects the speed but the latter does not. You can clearly see the difference in CPU-Z....Last edited by Notsosure; 11-01-2012, 06:59 PM.

Re: Toshiba Satellite - Locks up when plugged in
Yes, OE does not last long. My replaced OE128 had lasted about 8 months but some others were not even that much lucky. It is still one of the cheapest solution for people who do not mind another replacement in few months. Of course you can pull on few more months by entering Safe Mode and disabling both the processor cores IN THE DEVICE MANAGER (NOT IN BIOS, as this will reduce speed).
A more permanent solution will require you to replace OE with suitable small caps (you can use the list given above...

Re: Toshiba Satellite - Locks up when plugged in
As earlier, I would still insist that this solution is to be tried either as a temporary measure or if the only other option available is to throw away the laptop. I am yet to come across a better permanent solution than replacing the Proadlizer. However, the very first temporary solution to be tried is to disable the cores in Device Manager, which will most likely extend the life of the laptop by several months. This will provide enough time to prepare oneself for the ultimate solution of Proadlizer replacement....

Re: Toshiba Satellite - Locks up when plugged in
guruji,
Thank you for reiterating the solution, which is known for at least two years now. In this thread itself Rainbow mentioned the solution in February 2011 while stj and Wizard had provided some hints as early as February 2010. To my knowledge, the earliest solution of Proadlizer replacement was provided in September 2010 in Toshiba Forums. In fact, someone got a Toshiba laptop repaired in India in August 2010 but was only told that “core voltage controller chip” was replaced and based on this information someone...

Re: Toshiba Satellite - Locks up when plugged in
I have consistently measured it as a little over 5Ω (after zero adjustement), rievax measured it as 6Ω and inflex got it as 3-5Ω. Therefore, the measurement so far is between 3-6Ω. Any shorting between + and - suggests a possible soldering problem that needs to be corrected.
Overheating problem usually requires addressing possible issues involving fan, dust, heat sink, thermal paste, overclocking, etc....

Re: Toshiba Satellite - Locks up when plugged in
I presume you are trying to add these ceramic caps of unknown specs to the existing Proadlizer so as to increase total capacitance and decrease ESR. There is some obvious risk and the job is likely to be messy but who knows it might actually work. However, why are you not considering a simpler solution of replacing the Proadlizer with http://cz.rs-online.com/web/p/tantalove-kondenzatory/7372832/?searchTerm=737-2832&relevancy-data=636F3D3126696E3D4931384E525353746F636B4E756D6265724D504E266C753D656E266D6D3D6D61746368616C6C26706D3D5E5C647B337D5B5C732D2F255C2E5D5C647B332C347D2426706F3D313426736E3D592673743D52535F53544F434B5F4E554D424552267573743D3733372D323833322677633D4E4F4E4526...

Re: Toshiba Satellite - Locks up when plugged in
Just like Kemet's T520, T528 also appears to offer several options for replacement:

Re: Toshiba Satellite - Locks up when plugged in
For OE128, the following (or similar) replacements could be tried (in the preferential order of my guesswork):
PSGV0E337M6
T520V337M004ATE007
T520V337M2R5ATE007
T528Z337M2R5ATE008
T520V337M2R5ATE009
PSGV0E337M9
NTP477M2.5TRV(6)F
PSGV0E477M9
OE128 (will definitely work but may not last long)
For OE907, the following (or similar) replacements could be tried (in the preferential order of my guesswork):
PSGV0E337M6
T520V227M004ATE006
T520V337M004ATE007...

Re: Toshiba Satellite - Locks up when plugged in
You have made your laptop work again, which is no mean achievement. Congrats!
However, mockingbird is right in saying that one should not randomly pick caps without knowing their specs. There are numerous suggestions in this thread that you could have followed. Most importantly you should look for single digit ESR caps such as http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/tantalum-capacitors/0147639/ or others with even better specs. You are lucky that they are working for you.Re: Toshiba Satellite - Locks...

Re: Toshiba Satellite - Locks up when plugged in
Since you have given a new lease of life to your laptop from a hopeless situation your efforts are really commendable. However, your solution is a strange solution that takes us to unchatered territory and therefore I would advise it to be avoided unless people have no other alternative. I would be surprised if this solution would last long. At this stage we can only wait and watch. Please do keep us updated in any case....

Re: Toshiba Satellite - Locks up when plugged in
Congrats! That is a great price for one of the best suited specs, except the height that may not suit most people. T520V337M004ATE007 (or T520V337M2R5ATE007) are better for replacing both OE128 and OE907....Last edited by Notsosure; 09-15-2012, 03:39 PM.
