• Re: DELL OEM H240AS-00 (HIPRO) ~ major blow up!

Thanks for giving your valuable time to the query

I totally got you, and I think is a good learning point to see how Active PFC works in SMPS design. I will go through the UCC2819A datasheet and relatively check the design of this H240AS SPMS to understand it. I have also ordered few pieces of UCC28019A already to fix it.

And yes, I do use a 200w, 230V AC halogen in series on the mains to test these blown-out SMPS supplies for a probable short....

Thanks, I removed the chip itself yesterday and found that the short resolved post that. It is surprising to see that the main switching MOSFET+Switcher IC also blew this PFC chip, interestingly the PFC mosfet is not shorted at all.

Pretty sure the SMPS will be back to life when I replace the blown main switcher mosfet and switcher IC, but can the supply work without the PFC chip (circuit) in place. I know its efficiency and PFC correction will go away, but is it to okay to use this supply without PFC? ...

Wow this is a great help to quickly check the burnt components. As always the main MOSFET Q51, F1 , R25, C52, IC301, etc were burnt in my unit. Though I am yet to replace them, but is there any quick way of checking the PFC chip IC302 (UCC28019A)? I am observing a low impedance of around 4 to 7 ohms between its VCC and GND pin, not sure if has also gone defunct, any suggestions to passively test it though the PFC MOSFET is totally fine and not shorted.Re: DELL OEM H240AS-00 (HIPRO) ~ major blow up!

  • Re: Alternative of TOP244PN switcher IC?

Actually I had some spare TOP245YN. I was able to use the TOP245YN package successfully in the SMPS after going through the datasheet, basically, they just had undervoltage protection enabled for the standby supply section. I did the mods and integrated this package in the SMPS, and got the supply successfully working back ☺Re: Alternative of TOP244PN switcher IC?

PRC was doing illegal trade via aliexpress to India, so the indian govt caught that and shut their business India. Post that these guys have gone mad as they had to suffer losses. There are more plans to reduce even legal imports, more on the way in future, though companies cannot totally get away with china because of CHEAP labor. I think the states is also banning few apps originating from there right like tiktok, etc or not yet?...

Actually, aliexpress is banned in India and Digikey, elemen14 kind of sourcing websites do not sell to retailers in India in few pieces 😥...

  • Alternative of TOP244PN switcher IC?

I have an SMPS where the TOP244PN switching IC is used to power the standby section. I am not able to get this IC locally, is there any alternative in the TNY switcher series I can use in its place?

Also, can I use the TOP244YN package in place of this TOP244PN package? It seems in the PN package they have combined the X and L pins of the YN package and made single M line.I have an SMPS where the TOP244PN switching IC is used to power the standby section. • Re: Huntkey HK340-72FP SMPS shut on load above 2 amps

Yes, they have a 100-ohm power resistor on the 12v rail, and the total capacitance on each rail is around 3000uF. I tried adding another 6800uF cap on the 12v rail but observed the same shutting down.

Though I am fine with this behavior, I was planning to use this SMPS in the future for powering some projects and stuff (not for computers though), but is there anything that I can do to let the supervisor not shut the switching circuit on high inrush currents? Have you seen this kinda behavior/design...

  • Re: Huntkey HK340-72FP SMPS shut on load above 2 amps

Thank you so very much for responding. Yesterday, I was testing it and found out the exact same thing that you just mentioned. I actually bought these supplies from a friend of mine and planned to fix them so that I can use them in any future project.

For a quick high-load capability test, I usually connect a 12v, 60-watt car halogen bulb on the 12 rails. And with this specific supply only, it tripped when I connected this 60-watt bulb to the 12v rail when the supply was ALREADY SWITCHED ON. Surprisingly,...

  • Huntkey HK340-72FP SMPS shut on load above 2 amps

I have this Huntkey HK340-72FP PC SMPS where I am facing a strange problem where the SMPS shuts down when the load on any of its 12v output rails goes above 2 amps while the rating of each 12v rail is above 10amps capable.

    I have checked the following:
    1. All output caps are OK, and all output rails read correct voltages at no load
    2. All output diodes are OK
    3. NTC is ok
    4. Hi voltage cap on input correctly reads 150uF on LCR meter per the spec, also the bridge rectifier is OK
    5. No short in main switching MOSFET
    6. All other components...
