  • Re: LEGION Y530-15ICH - Starting out

Welp, ordered some new mosfets to replace PQ202 and Q121. Replaced them both, and plugged in the charger. The charging light was blinking. Nothing was really going on. I hit the power button on the laptop, nada. Squirted some 91% isopropyl alcohol on the board on several location, and I heard a ticking noise.

About 5 seconds later, PQ601 BURST into flames. I just watched it for a few seconds, before I unplugged and blew it out. Used the hot air station and tried to desolder the smoked mosfet, but it looks like the bottom plate fused...

Got a hot air station and a replacement pu602 mosfet. Replaced the pu602 mosfet, and now the boards charge light comes on when connected. Re-assembled, but it didn't power on. I noted that the main power rail goes up to p201 (has 20v), but not to pq202(no power). Now, Pu602 doesn't have power either. Will keep playing with it.

Noted today that PC629 and PC630 are showing continuity with ground on both sides. Should this be like that? These areas all heat up incredibly, but have no voltage to them.

I also noted that PR605 and PC634 have 4.7v going through them, when the board viewer says they should only have three. They heat up significantly.

Also detected that PU601 and PU602 are grounding out on the +3v_LX line.

    Additional checks this week:

-Checked near the previously mentioned PJ604 jumper. 20v goes in, area gets hot. The hottest spot on the board is at U132, on the other side.

-Near PJ604, is mosfet PQ603. 20v goes into one side, but no voltage goes out through the other pins on the fet. Expected 5v according to the schematic. Potentially bad? Or does this mosfet rely on something else being on before it can reduce voltage?

-PR3103 and PR 3108 are not grounding on one side. I cannot tell from the schematic...

Additional note: plugged in board, and looked at the thermal. Noticed a hot spot near keyboard ribbon cable plug in. Found out that PJ604 is getting a full 20v and heating up.

Alrighty, just finished with this. I changed up and used my fathers Fluke 115 for more accurate results.

Side to board ground, resistance re-check - With Fluke 115 RMS Multimeter
    Board ID#____Pin 1_________ Pin 2__________Component name
    PL601:----------3.69 K ohms-----3.69 K ohms-----1R5-843-C4K
    PL602:.............0.6 ohms.......... 0.6 ohms...........1R5-831-PR4
    PL201:----------1.488M ohms---1.486 M ohms----4R7-842-CDK
    PL1401:...........141.5 ohms......141.4 ohms........R68...

Sorry about the misunderstanding, the PR201 measurement in my last post is from the left side of the pad to the right side, essentially over the component.

For all of the other components, I got a reading from either side of the soldered component, to a copper ground spot on the board.

For the PR201 to ground, I got:
    Resistance Check: PR201 to ground - 57.3 K ohms....

    Understood, sorry about that.
Here are the values for the Resistance checks:

Side to board ground, resistance check
    PR201 - PR201: .3 ohms
    PL601: - 18.6 K ohms 1R5-843-C4K
    PL602:- .5 ohms 1R5-831-PR4
    PL201: .6 ohms 4R7-842-CDK
    PL1401: -Hovers around 143.0 ohms R68
    PL3102: -Hovers around 7.0 ohms R150 V01F
    PL2101: - 1.2 ohms R68
    PL1801: -Hovers around 154.0 R47
    PL5802: - 1.3 ohms R22
    PL5801:...

Thank you, I will begin looking into replacement mosfets.

Sorry about that, I did a diode check on all of those, so that was in voltage according to the INNOVA 3320 multimeter I'm using.
The resistances (in OHMs) are as follows:

Side to side, resistance check in OHMS
    PR201 - - .2
    PR201 - No contact. -
    PL601: -.1
    PL602: - .3
    PL201: -.3
    PL1401: - .1
    PL3102: -.1
    PL2101: - .2
    PL1801: -.2
    PL5802:...

  • LEGION Y530-15ICH - Starting out

Hello all! I recently picked up a broken legion y530 just for the fun of the repair.
For motherboard repair, I am definitely a newbie, but I have always wanted to attempt it.
These are the steps I've taken and what I've found so far. All images attached are relevant to the board.

-Machine does not power on. Light does not turn on when charger is plugged in. The charger is brand new and was not included with the laptop.

-Laptop disassembled. Board removed. Power cable was not in all the way for one. Found a drill bit (for going through wood/metal- four...

  • Re: New Members - please post your introductions here

Hello everyone! I stumbled upon this site in my quest to repair a Lenovo Y530 Legion. I fixed a y410p years ago, and decided to try my hand at it again. There is a board file I needed, and this site came up.

I love fixing things. Be it mechanical, electronic, etc, I just love the feeling of bringing something back to life. I hope to learn much in this community!
