Re: Laptop Power Jack replacement
The new Toshibas are a pain to disassemble, that's for sure. It's a shame you have to go through all of that just to unclog a heatsink or fan, isn't it?

Re: Laptop Power Jack replacement
Pedro, I do something similar to that. I have magnetic metal cups. They were originally paper clip cups, but I put magnets on the bases of the cups. I tape a piece of paper on the outside and write a letter on each cup. A may be 3.5mm screws, B may be 2mm screws, etc. Then, I draw out a diagram with the placement of each screw as I have them labeled in the cups.
Now I basically do this with laptops I haven't dealt with often. There are some like the HP Compaq nx6110 that I've repaired dozens of jacks with those models. I can almost...

Re: Recapping laptop boards?
Yes, that's is also a very good idea. I may have to think about that as well. Right now we have 8 techs besides myself, though.

Re: Recapping laptop boards?
I think there will be a good market for those who can recap a laptop board, kc8adu. So many shops are scared to even dismantle a laptop to the point of removing the mobo, so I think a guy could make a good niche with this sort of thing.
We see a lot of people bring in laptops with broken power jacks, too. I've gotten to the point that I can do one of those repairs in about 1:15. That's not too bad. Of course it takes longer when you factor in testing time, etc. I generally replace the jack and have the next guy do the testing for me. It...

Recapping laptop boards?
Has anyone on here had any experience recapping laptops? The boards are so expensive, I'm sure there's a market for this type of service.

Re: Laptop Power Jack replacement
I do this sort of thing all the time. I have a bit of detailed info on my site at http://comprehensivecomputing.net/power_jack_repair.htm but no "how to". I'm happy to answer any questions I can right here, though.
But you're right. It's definitely the power jack on that laptop. Be very careful if you decide to solder a new one yourself. Be careful removing the old one. You don't want to pull the foil from the socket if you don't remove all the old solder before you pull it.
You need a fine pencil...

Re: New to recapping (and thanks)
I'm still new to identifying them, but I think the ones I removed looked like Teapos, so I understand that was the problem in the first place. Perhaps that is why they didn't show any obvious signs of problems?
As for the power jacks, yes, I get a bunch of laptops shipped to me every week to perform that repair.

New to recapping (and thanks)
Hey I just wanted to thank you for setting up this web site. I'm still green when it comes to recapping, however I'm experienced with soldering and so forth as I regularly replace defective power jacks on laptops. Until this week, I hadn't really put much thought into recapping a board.
I had an HP desktop which would shut down when I tried to reinstall XP. I did all the routine things a person would suspect with this problem: check memory, try a new processor, check the heatsink, fan and thermal paste, try a different power supply, hard drive and remove PCI cards. I even flashed...Last edited by comprehensive_computing; 06-02-2007, 09:46 AM.
