• Re: Laptop capacitor type

Couldn't find the right cable so I ordered another inverter. It worked for a second and then stopped working when I finished putting the laptop back together. I knew I should have tested it again. Looked for the cable again on ebay, but no dice.....at least not from a US source.

I really don't want to spend another dime on this laptop so is there a way to eliminate the motherboard as the problem? Is it possible that the motherboard is burning out my inverters? I have purchased two replacements and the latest one only worked temporarily. Also,...

Thanks- I'll check it out and save it for a last resort. Going to try to exchange the inverter first (hoping the online store lets me since they sell refurbished goods).

The cable has a 6 pin for the inverter, and the harness terminates at one plug on the motherboard, with the LCD ribbon joined at the same harness. Can't locate the cable on ebay.

    Same cable in this link:

  • Re: Laptop capacitor type

No, I have not replaced the cable yet. The image is on the screen, however faint, so I'm leaning towards a motherboard (maybe not providing a strong enough signal to the inverter) or a faulty refurbished inverter. I am likely going to try to call to get a replacement inverter tomorrow......but I am near the point where I don't want to spend anymore money. The inverter was purchased from a vendor that was not through ebay and may provide a replacement, so I will take that path (of least resistance and cost), however I was curious if the motherboard caps...

  • Laptop capacitor type

I just replaced the screen and the inverter from my laptop and it still doesn't work. I bought both used (screen from ebay and a possibly refurbished inverter) and I still have the exact same issue---- so before spending more money, I want to diagnose the problem correctly.

    Toshiba L35-S2161 (PSL33U-02401D)

Over the course of a few weeks the display started to disappear. It would work normally sometimes (even powered on for a full day), and sometimes I could only see a very very faint image.

I have connected the laptop to an external monitor and the...

  • Re: LCD TV turns off randomly

Went back to it today because I only went over the power board yesterday with the heat gun. Today I hit the top board and the main board (board with all the TV in/out). I noticed that if I heated the main board, the backlight would not turn on for a few seconds which is not normal since the TV backlight always comes on first.

  • Re: LCD TV turns off randomly

I've turned it on a few times and aside from the wait to get the screen powered up, it didn't budge under the heat gun on low, even with ambient temp of almost 90.

    Thanks-

I will put it together tomorrow and begin stressing the board to see if I can duplicate the problem. I've already desoldered and resoldered many items on the board so it should be a good test.

  • Re: tool needed?

    Ended up ordering these-

    http://www.amazon.com/SE-Dental-Tool-Set-Piece/dp/B001JE32HY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1337125734&sr=8-2

Harbor freights don't really exist around where I live, and driving to save a couple bucks is not really worth it considering the price of gas. I'd rather get stuff delivered to me tax free.Re: tool needed?

Ende...
Harbor

  • Re: Dell Optiplex GX270 ghetto heatsink mod and recap

You guys recap and resell boards huh? I didn't know there was money in that, but I really don't have the money to keep stashes of capacitors around and don't have cash to spend on a bunch of spare parts. I just threw out about 10 boards (yea, not much), but if they each could have put $30 in my pocket, that would have been great.

Found this link after a search-

    https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=20511&highlight=dental+picks

Good info for me- I didn't know what the terminology was so I had to start a thread. A question on top of my original question.......

There were comments that too big a pick can rip out something so I am unsure because I really beat the crap out of the motherboard I was working on and it worked fine, but I don't fully understand the nuances of working on this stuff. I used a pick which, incidentally, was...

  • tool needed?

Today, I replaced a few caps on a motherboard for a friend. The board had 2 adjacent holes for the negative lead, and 1 hole for the positive IIRC. The solder sucker worked well for the 2 holes, but was useless for the single hole. I had this problem before, and I've ordered a couple new conical tips to see if they will allow me to use the solder sucker more effectively for the really small holes, but I'm not sure it would be enough and was hoping to find a tool that was thin enough to clear the hole, and hard enough not to break. I've used sewing needles in the past, but they break under little...

Okay, I just looked at the back of the TV, and the model number I posted is correct. I was not able to borrow a digital camera so I am left with my camera phone which may work to focus on certain points on the board.

I've read and watched a lot of soldering guides....thankfully, I haven't had to replace any of the smaller items illustrated in that link. Maybe later, but I don't even know how to diagnose problems on circuit boards. I would benefit from learning some basic electronics for sure....

same here- this one is going to replace the TV that was stolen out of my buddies garage. It was yet another of the same TV model- I hope it's going bad so the thieves get minimal use from the TV....

  • Re: LCD TV turns off randomly

I should be able to replace the caps- I need the practice anyways because I need to get more familiar with my soldering equipment. For example, I just learned that to desolder the board, the temp has to be dang hot- I set mine to almost 700F and the solder still took a number of seconds before it began to melt. Resoldering was as easy as it's ever been, though. I'm not sure if it's the big joints that is making it easy to clean up the hole, or if the flux pen I used really helped, but so far this is a lot easier than desoldering and resoldering motherboards...

  • Re: LCD TV turns off randomly

I talked to my brother and he described the problem for me-

He said when you'd turn it on, the screen would be black, and you'd have to turn it off and turn it back on again to get it to turn on. My buddy has the same exact TV and he is having the random shut offs- on his TV and the screen does not come back on for 10 minutes or so. I don't have his TV yet, but I asked to bring it to me in case I have to order parts, I can do all at once and save myself a couple bucks.

I don't have a digital camera, but I'll see if I can borrow...
