• Re: Discharging and General Capacitor Information for LNS4051 LCD TV

Navy, here. If it's any consolation, I was born at Wright-Pat

Agreed. When our profession develops thousands of new components every day, keeping up with things is monumental. I profess that you may have the advantage over me in regards to updated materials. However, the basics still apply - it's the smaller (inductive?) differences that matter here.

True. I admit, I have never measured the inductance of a cap. Have you?

    Oops. I now...

Seriously? The inductive differences are... what?... a few nano Henries? If your SMPS design can't handle the equivalent of a couple of loops on your output leads, then you're in the wrong fscking line of work. Heaven forbid that your load will be a motor, solenoid, or relay.

Nowadays, most SMPS design falls down to just a few controller ICs, some MOSFETs, Schottkys, and our familiar LESR caps. They've become something of a commodity. So, I find it hard to believe that using a 25V cap in...

  • LG Flatron L194WT-SFQ:AUSRQF

    Okay, sports fans!

Our patient this time is an LG L194WT-SFQ:AUSRQF. The Pt presented - wait - this isn't student med...

This monitor was DoA, and plugging it in showed no soft-start or power. Dead as a doornail. After prying the front bezel off (and breaking three of the top tabs), removing the four screws on the back, and disconnecting the switchboard cable, panel header, and the CCFL plugs, the power PCB was removed.

See shots 01, 02, and 03. Shots 04/05 are close-ups of the Samxons by the HS. Shots 06/07 are of the bottom, and shot 08 is a side...

  • Re: LG Flatron L196WTQ monitor with bad power supply

Could you post a pic or look again at the PCB? I worked on an L194WT, and the board had a true bridge rectifier (D2SB60) at BR101 on the AIP-0122 rev. D, made by Lien Chang. Fuse (F101) was the same type as yours.

However, as we EE/ETs say, "What took out the fuse/bridge?"

Since this is the primary, you'll want to look at the mains cap (~100uF, 300-400V - aka, "The Big Bastard"), any power resistors, the MOSFET, and the transformer.

    I haven't posted the write-up...

Believe it or not, I forgot something...

All those High-Voltage! warning stickers? They're there to warn you that the HEATSINK is attached to the tabs of the mounted components, and that they may be at a high-voltage (I was taught anything over ~50-75V) potential while powered.

So, don't touch the big metal "radiators" with your fingers, or use them as ground points for your DVM or scope, while plugged in and you'll be fine.

Depends. Essentially, how much juice (uF-V) and how much load (R) for the juice to pour into. It's right up there with the "RC Time constant". If there is no load, then you're talking about the self-discharge (leakage) rate, which for some serious caps, can be months.

Through a high-enough (use Ohm's Law) resistor. For safety's sake, use the voltage rating on the cap. For a typical input filter, we'll use 450V (the uF value only matters for how long we'll be appying...

  • Re: Can hardly believe how much damage this virus did

Had a friend with the same thing about April/May of this year. I think it was a Java or Flash exploit (and why Avira didn't catch it - it thought that you wanted to run the script) that used a fake "Windows Security Essentials" or somesuch. It then just hid everything.

Avira and MBAM will find and get rid of it, but they have to be updated to (IIRC) the Jun2011 version. All I needed to do is what Krankshaft posted: attrib *.* -h /s (the "/s" means to include subfolders, too!). After waiting...

  • Re: Identify a cap on a IBM systemX3400M3

I used to edit a newsletter (and design flyers and signs), so I'm seeing something you don't:

The "E" in "EZA" is about two points larger (relatively speaking) than the "ZA". Notice that the "E" extends about a millimeter or so below the baseline of where "ZA" is sitting.

    So... 470 E ZA?

  • Re: NEW recap video made and working

Slightly late to the parade, but...

I liked your vids. Short and to the point.

I'm seeing what looks like my setup: a trusty Weller WP-25, a few Radio Shack irons, and that wonderful desoldering iron.

Yeah, I'm what they call a "cheapass SOB".

Yes, I've used professional equipment, but for my home use (and the average hobbyist), Radio Shack isn't as bad, tool-wise, as others would have you believe. So, when one is just wanting to re-cap a mobo or PSU to get back up and running,...

Posting to get the ball rolling...

Navy AET (Go NEETS!), Certified mechanic, yada yada.

HouseFly88: I've met amatuer EE's that could run circles around some "pros" I've known. Don't sweat it.

prof_unrat: If you have one of the newer styled Amigas (A4000, A1200, or A600), then re-cap all the SMT 'lytics - NOW! CBM got hold of those lousy "rotting fish" things, and they leak and eat away the PCB traces. I tried to re-cap my A600 (A4K to follow), but the caps I ordered...
