• Re: MSI P965 NEO - Question about capacitor type

This motherboard / PC -project has been on ice for some time but now I'm back to it.

Situation is that I was unable to get picture on every boot so I replaced to caps made by Teapo, even though they didn't look faulty. Now it seems that I can get picture every time. However, sometimes it still requires couple attempts to actually be stable. This morning I used the PC several hours once I got it running after which I shut it down. After some waiting I was back again with the booting problems. I have also noticed that it...

  • Re: MSI P965 NEO - Question about capacitor type

Well there is no other reason of buying from eBay than price, capacitors are quite more expensive if I buy them from reseller here in Finland and then repairing this board might not be worth it because I might get fully working one nearly same price. I know that it is risky when buying from eBay but so far there hasn't been problems, altough I've always used bit higher rated caps than what is stated in the originals and those on that auction are not...

  • MSI P965 NEO - Question about capacitor type

I have MSI P965 NEO motherboard which is not working OK. When I received it there was couple bad OST capacitors which I replaced, those were located here and there. The board does power up each time and you can configure BIOS etc, but when you try to boot Ubuntu or Windows it crashes, Ubuntu throws kernel panic while when booting Windows it might just shut down. This leads me to believe it is problem with processor stability and with capacitors surrounding the socket to be exact as the processor is known good. Those caps surrounding the socket are OST branded RLA 680uf 4V. They don't look bad...

  • Re: iMac G5 - works only when cold booted

Update to this. I mentioned that fans were spinning at maximum, in addition to this there was also red led which means overheating. I disassembled the machine and tried to create a kind of "shim" between the heatsink and the gpu, currently I do not have copper plate which I know is the only real option for shim. I did have some thermal conductive mat (or something, I don't know how to describe it, english is not my main language....) After this the machine seemed to be stable in use, I played some 3D games, surfed the net etc....

  • Re: iMac G5 - works only when cold booted

Well it seems that I cannot edit my last message, but today I decided to replace the two caps near the GPU and the video data cable and now atleast couple times I have been able to first heat the machine up with Halo, then put the machine to sleep and wake up succesfully after letting it cool down a little while in sleep mode. I used bit "overspecced" caps made by Sanyo, originals were Rubycon 1800uf 6.3v and these are 1800uf 10V, most of the time when I replace caps I actually use ones rated bit higher, on microfarads or volts...

  • Re: iMac G5 - works only when cold booted

Well it is probably GPU fault, I'm starting to agree. I booted the machine without the back cover in this "artifact mode" and when I applied some pressure back and forth where the GPU is located (heatsink was in place of course) and I was able to change the artifacts according to whether or not there was pressure. I'm not unfamiliar to this solder issue, just based on my previous experience FX 5200 usually does not fail atleast on these machines but it seems that this is the case now. Altought usually it has been so that there...

Well the power supply has those security screws so I can't open it. Would it make sense that there could be one big capacitor which has slightly failed and the time needed to wait is not actually for the GPU to cool down but for the capacitor to completedly discharge? Or same kind of thing for one or more caps on motherboard? Just guessing.

Here is video about the whole thing:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5otU5BmNea8&feature=youtu.be

The machine was on for some time before I started to record. Beforce boot up it had been off for plenty enough time for it to cool down, the power cord was plugged in the whole time. Basically I play some alo, run some GioFX Openmark which displays OpenGL ball spinning and then I watch some Apple commercials. No problems, no artifacts, I have played Halo much longer, for about 30 minutes. The fans of course...

  • iMac G5 - works only when cold booted

So, I have this first generation iMac with Nvidia FX 5200, 17" model. The thing is that the machine works only when booted cold. I can play Halo for example without any problems and surf the web and so on. If I power down the machine after some use and let it cool a little it shows artifacts and usually locks up. When it is in this "artifacting mode" Apple Hardware Test says that the GPU is the fault, when booted off cold all tests pass without problems.

Very confusing, I have changed couple caps, there were two which were bulging. Capacitors which have not been changed...

  • Apple iMac 2006 mobo

I decided to post here because I think users of this forum are used to many kinds of boot problems, in this particular case I don't immediately suspect capacitor problem.

I have this iMac 2006 and when I press the power button hard disk and optical drive will spin up like normal, the two visible fans will make brief movement but not actually spin. If I plug USB keyboard to the back of the computer the backing light on the keyboard will blink quickly but not stay on. The machine will not chime or anything but it stays powered on until I shud it down by pressing the power button....

  • Re: Abit NF-M2SV - bad caps or?

Problem solved, atleast the first one was fixed by replacing all OST caps, even those which did not have external signs of being faulty. At first attempt Windows XP was installed without any problems and is now running fine.

I guess the second board can be cured with the same way.

Seems like I cannot edit my post? Well, I did quickly try to take some caps from the another board and now again this board boots to Ubuntu -desktop but crashes if move mouse! What's really strange is that I can use keyboard.

  • Re: Abit NF-M2SV - bad caps or?

Well no problems with hard drives, it does recognize them and is able to copy files for example, at one point it did boot succesfully into Ubuntu desktop and everything worked including USB keyboard and mouse. That was after I had changed only one cap which seemed to be faulty. This did not last since after couple succesful boots the situation reverted back to what was before, to shutdowns. I have tried the heat gun method two times but it does not change anything, I have repair couple graphic cards and laptops with same settings,...

Okay, bit surprising since I've fixed couple iMac G5's with these and after years the caps are still fine. However I did order Rubycon MCZ caps.

I've also done something which I know is not recommened, but I took some of the caps from the another same kind of board (caps which seemed to be fine) and replaced some of this board I am currently working. The board still boots up to bios at every attempt, it goes trough the first phase of Windows XP setup and then I've noticed follwing (I am using USB stick as installation media):...

Here are temperature readings when idling in BIOS which cannot be correct:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIYbhEsXEi0

There seems however be fix in form of a bios update. I'm not sure which bios is installed since the BIOS screen is not so informative about, there is date 4.4 and year 2007 but none of the BIOSes have been released on that day according to Abit website:

    http://www.abit.com.tw/page/en/download/download_bios_detail.php?pFILE_TYPE=Bios&pMAIN_TYPE=Motherboard&pTITLE_ON_SCREEN=NF-M2SV&pSOCKET_TYPE=Socket%20AM2...

  • Re: Abit NF-M2SV - bad caps or?

    Okay, didn't know that.

I uploaded a small video about how it hangs. The board boots into BIOS every time but hangs on different stages when Ubuntu is being loaded. Windows 7 usually is able to load drivers and enter into graphical stage, there it hangs at the part where I have selected partitions and pressed Next (if it haven't hanged before that). Couple times it did boot up to Ubuntu-desktop and function normally.

I don't know why this video has that kind...

  • Re: Abit NF-M2SV - bad caps or?

Yeah, I have heat gun which I have used to repair this laptop I am now using so probably I could try it next. However, since I got frustrated that I have wasted many good new caps I removed most of them and replace with originals. I of course did not remember which one was where (they have same ratings of course). I switched the system on and noticed that one which is near where the main power cord is connected almost immediately started to bulge and system crashed again. This same thing happened with one near PCI-E slot. Again, all of them have same...

  • Abit NF-M2SV - bad caps or?

I have two of these boards and both of them have same kind of symptoms. First one has clearly bad capacitors and I am planning to try to repair it later and now focus on the other one which seems to have good capacitors but still is unstable.

I don't have enough capacitors so that I could replace all 1800uf / 6.3v OST caps which according to this forum usually go bad on these boards and they indeed are the faulty ones on the another board I mentioned. I have now changed all but two caps near the CPU socket and the board will not usually boot into Ubuntu desktop, it hangs after loading...
