  • Re: Nearing wit's end troubleshooting NAD T777 v3 AVR

Sandpaper was the kindest of several options being considering for this piece of electronics. One of the options involved a tractor.

Hi. So I finally got around to poking at the receiver again. Just to catch everyone up, the unit had two separate issues. One issue involved audio drops and static, pointing to the speaker relays as the likely culprit. The other issue seems like a DSP problem with PCM processing.

Anyhow, I cleaned up all the right channel speaker relays with sandpaper and reheated the relay connections to the PCB, just in case the the connection was poor. They solder work appeared fine, fwiw. Doing the sandpaper thing has resolved...

Wow. Thanks for that manual! I deleted the manual I was using a few days ago. I searched the Internet for a couple of hours last night and I couldn't find a copy.

Regarding your question... I'm unsure this is related. There was a different problem (probably different problem) that started me down this path of a DIY repair. This NAD experienced frequent audio drops and some light distortion/crackling on the speaker channels supported by the right side amplifier. There are 2 amp modules, right at left. The left supports...

I’m interested in plugging away at this, but still replacing it though. I found a service manual for a 758, which is a different model in the same line up. The module schematics appear very similar. Curiosity will drive me to do more studying tonight.

Sorry. It was 100% sarcasm. The ideal repair for the NAD is recycling and replacing it with a different AVR.

Interesting. Good idea as I hadn't tested with different source audio formats. And it turns out this problem only occurs when the source format is PCM! Well, at least that's what I'm experiencing at this moment. It's a buggy device though so time will tell.

All things considered, I have figured out a way to solve this issue permanently. I'm working on repositioning the NAD's power cord. It's a delicate electrical procedure that involves taking the power cord out of the NAD and permanently connecting it to another...

Just to partially close the loop here, CapLeakers statements on repair approaches are true. After digging around, it seems near impossible to find a repair shop that's going to actually fix the hardware inside the unit. NAD farms out repair work to authorized service centers. There are 2 of those within a couple of hours from my place.

Repair place #1, which happens to be pretty close by, said: "no thank you, I'm too busy. call someone else."

Repair place #2 said: "Sure, we can fix...

So many factory resets. And the firmware is current. The replacing boards part is what I was hoping to avoid as it wouldn't be as fun. Will ponder it. Maybe I'l take it in, or just keep it as a spare....

Thanks Keeney. I'm confident about my troubleshooting and I'm certain the fault lies within the NAD. I have decades of technology experience and at a user level I understand how this stuff works end to end. What I'm not is an EE or a competent electronics repair tech. I'm trying to learn a bit there.

I think I'll end up taking it to a NAD service center. Appreciate the advice.

I've considered it. I'm worried it won't get fixed and be a waste of time. Or the cost of repair will be enough to where I should keep going down the path of replacing it with another AVR.

Before I get there I was hoping someone might see a smoking gun made obvious by this symptom. I own a multimeter and can solder and I'm not afraid of attempting a repair....

It'll do it on all sources, including the PS5. The PS5 normally plays background music on the Home Screen, and when that's playing, no audio drops. But after turning off the background music, it'll drop when slowly toggling around the menu. Each navigation step causes a click or boop. When no background audio playing, it'll miss the navigation noise. It's worth mentioning that I believe this happens during movies too. If the scene is absolutely silent, the moment someone talks you could miss a small part of the dialogue. Maybe...

I've tested cables, sources, and inputs ad nauseam. My normal setup has an Apple TV 4K, Nvidia Shield Pro, and a PS5 all connected to the NAD via HDMI, and the NAD outputs HDMI to a Samsung display. I don't use ARC. The problem happens on both the Apple TV and Shield. It even happens when the Apple TV is connected directly to the display while passing audio back to the NAD via an optical connection. Swapped speakers, too.

I'll check out that AV forums site. I've done a tone of googling on problems with this AVR,...

The only good thing here is I've found an easily reproducible problem to troubleshoot. In another thread the issue started with bad PSU capacitors then it seemed like a couple of failing speaker relays. But I've ruled out the relays for this particular prob. This AVR may have more than one issue, but this one is reproducible so focusing here seems wise.

When scrolling around an Apple TV home screen, you'll a hear a normal "boop .. boop" sound, produced by the ATV's interface when bouncing from app to app. On this NAD 777, you'll hear it, too. But if you wait a bit before...

  • Re: 7 channel NAD receiver,Need help identifying a suitable cap replacement

So I'm getting ready to tear it apart and tackle this potential speaker relay issue, but I'm left with one question.

What are the chances more than one relay will have problems simultaneously?

With more troubleshooting, I do see that messing with volume levels can cure the audio issues temporarily. The amp function of this NAD receiver has two modules, right and left. Left is fine. But all right channels seem to suffer the same symptoms. There are 5 separate relays on the right...

The prob reoccured and cranking up the volume actually fixed it, for now. Good call....

I reassembled the receiver and can't seem to reproduce the problem. Sometime it takes a while to materialize.

Haven't tried shaking it. I'm going to do some bench testing once I put the power supply back in.

I love this forum. "It's not at all what you think it is, it's this series of other things you don't understand." I'll eventually understand . I like the logic that the capacitors are good as they would have an effect on all channels otherwise. I was thinking that it may be the order of channels through the circuit paths. The one thing that remains interesting to me is the FR and C...

Are the relays the black doodads in the bottom left of the pic? And ... does cranking up the volume trigger the relay to act when its malfunctioning? I haven't tried messing with the volume as a troubleshooting step so I'm interested in better understanding cause and effect.

    Thanks....
