Re: esr or cap tester
Hu, Suad. Some things to know about electrolytic capacitors:
1. It is common for electrolytic capacitors to have asymmetrical tolerance. A typical value is -20%/+80%.
2. The reason for the above is due to dielectric resorption during capacitor storage. Go to the following page for information on how electrolytic capacitors are made:

3. It is important to understand that the capacitance...

Re: esr or cap tester
Hi, Mike. No, I'm not a writer by profession. However, technical writing is frequently a part of my work.
A big part of my job is making sure users can actually comprehend both the software and hardware they are using.
In many cases, I find the difference between success and failure in a computer project hinges on having users understand how to use the system competently and effectively. Users can't do that if they don't understand their part in the total scheme of things - as well as what to do when...

Re: esr or cap tester
Hi, Suad. The Micro V4.0s does not have the "deadless" feature. It does have the newer input protection using the SMCJ5.0 transient suppressor - which is far superior to the back-to-back diodes used in the earlier model.
I don't know if mike switched production to the use of the SMCJ5 with the Micro 4.0 - you'll have to ask mike himself about that one.
Hope this helps....

Re: esr or cap tester
Hi, Mike. I picked up one of your ESR Micro 4.0s units on Ebay. Purchased through Paypal, sent by Russian Post to Canada. All went well and my unit arrived in just over 2 weeks - specified in the Ebay listing as the usual transit time by post from the Russian Federation.
So, I unpacked my new shiny
Tested my new shiny. It works! It works!

Not just Samsung Monitors - Printers too!
OK, I am familiar with the Samwha Capacitor debacle when it comes to Samsung Monitors and LCD TVs. What I didn't know until a few days ago was the "Badcap" problem occurs with Samsung Printers as well.
Printer displaying the problem:
Manufacturer: Samsung
Model: ML-2152W
Network Printer: Yes
Duplex Printer: Yes
USB 2 Interface: Yes
Wireless Printing: Yes - 802.11b
Symptoms:
1. The Printer will spontaneously reboot when coming...

Re: esr or cap tester
Hi, Mike. There are a couple of ways to bulletproof that situation:
System 1
1. Your original design uses less than 0.6v for the test - so the test can be performed in-circuit without causing conduction in the semiconductors in-circuit with the capacitor under test. The protection circuit must therefore be sensitive enough to detect any condition which causes the voltage to rise above the level where any semiconductors in the circuit under test can start conducting and therefore affect the test -...

Re: esr or cap tester
Hi, Mike. When will production of the ESRmicro4.0 be available with the "deadless" feature?
I have checked your website and read about the production delays and the proposed timeframe for when new units will be available again - which should be shortly according to the latest info.
Please let me know when I will be able to order and receive a "deadless" ESRmicro 4.0. Thanks....
