• Re: Sony amp "protect" issue

Lack of proper cooling no doubt. Install a heatsink, a fan, or both.

I'd bet that thing has been worked on before. Factory originals arent THAT sloppy with heatsink grease....normally....

• Re: Lightning VS Home audio sub

Could be as simple as a fuse or as complicated as several components being fried.
Also look on the bottom side of the board for foil traces that have been burnt or melted off. You can run fine wires in place of those burnt traces.
At any rate, the actual speaker should be good.

Re: sony STR-AV310

You should start with checking the solder around that xsistor 1st. Be sure it's screwed tightly to it's heatsink. It may need to be replaced if all else fails.

You mentioned the speakers hardly distort. 45W is not alot of power and high volume levels will send it into clipping (distortion). Clipping is when a sine wave gets cut off and is square which is DC in that portion of the waveform. Thats how most speakers get cooked, by being fed distortion or clipping from an underpowered or overdriven amp. That's why you are less likely to blow speakers...

That's alot over the edge hardwareguy. Just because your ears cant tell the difference between high quality audio and the basic stuff doesnt mean an "audiophile" cant. I'll agree with you on some of that but take speakers as an example. A set of Energy 22 reference models sound alot better than a pair of Cerwin Vega party blasters. BUT that depends what you value most. If it's sheer volume then the CW's win but for clarity, pureness, and accuracy of sound the 22's win hands down. It's why you see 22's and similar reference speakers in tv and...

• Re: bad caps on intel 865 gbf motherboard.

Bought a 2.8 Prescott on ebay for $32 incl shipping for my latest 865 board.

The Prescotts in these boards are baking the hell out of the 820/6.3's beside the CPU but there are 2 or 3 others of the same value elsewhere on the board that go at the same time so I am not making the assumption this is heat related.

Virtually every Intel 865 board I come across now needs these caps replaced.

• Philips DVP642 DivX DVD player

I've got 2 of these:
http://www.techtastic.ca/reviews3/dvp642.html
Basic DVD players with DivX. Great little players but one wouldnt turn on at all, the standby light was on and that's it.
After the cover was off there was an obvious problem, a bulging cap on a small board and if I recall correctly it was a 470/25.
Replacing it brought the player back to life.
A very easy fix.https://I've got 2 of these:<br /> ...on at all, the

• Re: Power supply build quality pictorial

Re-posted here, in the newer thread.
I've done 2 of these 4 fan Super Flower 550W monsters this week and am using one now. One took 4 caps, the other took 6. When the fans are on full it is noisy as hell but on auto or slow and the 2 little top fans removed it's not bad at all. On the website it's the 4-fan type at the bottom of the page.

And they have a "Golden Heat-sink"

• Re: bad caps on intel 865 gbf motherboard.

Every time I see an Intel 865 lately, it's got leaking caps. I've recapped one and am currently using it with a 3.0 Prescott cpu and it works rock solid and stable with XP.
I used 1000uf/6.3 to replace the old leaking 820's. 820uf proved to be too difficult to find locally.
I've now got another one to do but need a Prescott P4 and some 400ddr ram as well.
I'll recap it and watch for the parts I need.

Intel is very aware of problems with this board:

• Re: Thinking of doing my first recap

If you dont like to, dont wanna bother, or cant remove the caps from the pc board properly and dont care what the finished board looks like then cut the old ones off from the top. This leaves the original soldered connection intact and eliminates the risk of board damage.

Use sidecutters to chop the cap off about 2/3 down which leaves the rubber seal and a decent length of lead. Slide the rubber seal and remaining piece of can from the leads, tin the leads sticking out of the board and on your new cap and solder the new cap to...

• Re: Help me fix my stove???

Most transformers have a thermal fuse buried under the covering or even in the windings. Any I've done are in the primary so a simple continuity test with an ohm meter will tell you if the primary is open. On your diagram the primary is E1 & E2, or the black wire and the white wire. If it measures open (infinity), start digging carefully into the transformer where the primary leads go in to see if there's a thermal fuse. If you find one but cant get it out you can wire another in parallel with it as long as you can get at both leads.

• Re: Adding in a new breaker panel

In my province, (Sask) all electrical work done by a homeowner is "supposed" to be inspected, and I've had that done anytime I've done any wiring. A few yrs ago I wired in another breaker for a garage I built. I ran it thru the wall and underground to the garage from the house. I also wired the garage. I followed the code book and did exactly as it specified. The code book says the trench was to be open so it could be checked for proper depth, etc. The inspector checked it out and I pointed out that the trench was regulation depth, etc....

General Purpose....now I see after doing some reading on Chemi-Con's site.
Next time I buy I'll be more specific as to my needs.
Always nice to learn new things, thx!
But these will still be going into my ECS P3 Tualatin mobo.

• Re: The GOOD Capacitors Thread!!

I looked at my receipt and they're listed as United Chemicom but on the caps it just says KMG, and has the little logo of a shield?
I bought them with the intention of going on to MB's and PS's, and that's where they'll be going. Cant be any worse than the crap that was there originally.

The various caps I've seen puking all over MB's and PS's look like basic consumer grade stuff, just like in everything else.

Wouldnt calling any consumer grade cap "general purpose" be accurate?

• Re: The GOOD Capacitors Thread!!

I just found this site and it's been very interesting reading. I've been an electronics tech for many, many years so have seen alot of bad electrolytics.
In the 80's I spent several years repairing consumer items such as tv's, vcr's, etc. Electrolytic caps have always been going bad which makes them a a good money maker from a service point of view. In the 80's I replaced 1000's of bad caps in tv's. I recall the Hitachi's that had alot of failures in the vertical circuit and the fix was 3.3/160 lytics. The visible evidence on those was usually...
