Re: How is it possible to establish bad becoming good?
My Hiper TypeR 580W PSU (circa 2006) is full of Teapos and still going strong, despite having powered an SLI 7800GTX + C2D at 3GHz, followed by the same CPU + a 2900 XT for 9 months, and now a C2Q (B3!) at 3GHz with a G92 8800GTS, which has been left running overnight running at 100% (400%?) CPU load encoding H.264 video with Handbrake fairly consistently for the last few months.
Before I swapped my case for one with the PSU at the bottom, it was removing quite a bit of heat from the case too - the fans in the...

Re: House Lan Wiring
Aargh... That's why I settle for the lower speeds of Wireless (and my Draft-N kit really doesn't seem to be any quicker than the G kit it replaced, but nevermind - the router has a faster CPU and more RAM, which keeps DD-WRT happy.)
I was thinking of getting a pair of HomePlug bridges to network upstairs to downstairs faster - I certainly wouldn't faff around with in-wall LAN cable, but then again, perhaps your walls are less solid than ours - not so much cavity as chipping a groove in the plaster and then re-plastering over the cable. It's also...

Re: Jetway P4845GEBL
Nice clear socket area on that board; you could attach a huge heatsink. Probably a good thing, it being a P4 board and all

Re: Gainward GeForce FX5200
I'm surprised they bothered soldering the fan power connector on a passively cooled card. Most manufacturers will cut every corner possible to save money.

Re: Aspire PSU with bad caps
I did read that article, much to my distress, but I've never had any trouble running pretty heavily loaded systems off that PSU - it was in my main rig until I built the current C2D system (which needed a 24-pin ATX connector) and I've never seen the +12 line go below about 12.2v...
I even ran a system with a heavily overclocked 6800 Ultra and Northwood 3.06 & 3.5GHz off of it and it didn't flinch under load, so either not all ATX-66B PSUs are built with the same, under-specced components or I am one very lucky person to get a 10A...

Re: Aspire PSU with bad caps
Another Youngyear ATX-66B-based PSU then? (joining the ranks of the X-Connect 500W)
Mine has Fuhjyyus though.

Re: The GOOD Capacitors Thread!!
What's the long term durability of polymer types compared to decent low ESR caps from the likes of Rubycon, Panasonic, Samxon, etc?
I've heard that they're more temperature tolerant, but no idea what that really means; does it mean they run closer to specs at high temps, or last longer at high temps, or what?

Re: New Server
I think I'd worry more about IIS than Windows per se... IMHO Windows only has a reputation for being insecure because of idiots configuring it and dodgy hardware (neither of which apply here!) but IIS is amongst the buggiest code to come out of Redmond.
I don't think the OS debate is like Coke vs. Pepsi; that's subjective, whereas it's basically a proven fact that Linux-based servers have longer average uptimes than those running Windows, whatever the reason for that may be. I can't think of a scientific way to prove Coke tastes better than Pepsi or...

Re: New Server
...Why Windows?
Surely some Linux Distro or (preferably IMHO) FreeBSD with a LAMP setup would be more stable, secure and fast. I'll use Windows as a desktop OS, but certainly not on my home server
Plus, it's not like IIS is well known for its security and reliability. You can run Apache on Windows too, if you must?

Re: Now THAT is a sound card!
Yeah, but it's gonna be expensive, and everything I've read suggests that an opamp swapped X-Fi card is in the same sort of analogue stage quality as the Auzentech cards anyway.

Re: Now THAT is a sound card!
I'm going to change the opamps on my OEM SB X-Fi Xtreme Music for LM4562s in the very near future (I'll change the larger caps at the same time and probably knock some of the smaller ones out of the signal path...) - that way, I should end up with a card with audio quality rivalling some of the higher end cards (though maybe not an Auzentech!) but maintain the niceties of Creative's cards, like EAX3-5, since at the moment there really isn't a 'prefect' card on the market. Most of the pro models have awful DS3D support and can't do EAX >2 (and...

Not strictly a motherboard, but a PSU!
Hi, first post here so I'm sorry if I got it all wrong!
I know trodas already from the OCW Forums, where I'm known as RayvenX
Anyhow, the subject of my post is a somewhat unfortunate PSU, a GTR 450W-Li. I've not heard of the brand before, my friend from Hong Kong brought it back to the UK for me, but it has 30A on a single 12v rail and is very stable, even under high loads so I don't want to throw it away (although the bright colour scheme and half-transparent housing is a bit 'bling' for my liking)...
I looked in the top of it, having become...
