<On the hot leg of my variac / isolation transformer I had a switch that would bring in and out of circuit a 25 watt lamp. So on first turn on, current was limited. Cuts down on the burning smell if something goes wrong.>
An old time Ham operator taught me a similar trick when troubleshooting an unknown piece of equipment.
He wired a 100W light bulb in series with the AC line between the isolation transformer and the item under test.

OK, so welcome to the group....
I was drawn here in search of troubleshooting information, found the forum, liked it and registered.
My online name is my Amateur Radio callsign. Those of you familiar with Ham Radio will know how to find out more. I hold an Amateur Extra license in the US (KD3RF) and a + license in Canada (call sign in Canada is VE2DXY).
I've been known to hold a soldering iron on occasion, and am well familiar with the older vacuum tube technology for those old enough...
