Re: Resetting BIOS passwords on newer laptops
I bought a second hand laptop with 8FC8 suffix. I was able to complete the asset transfer process and Dell provided me the master key. So I have an asset tag + the master reset key for that tag. Would this be of any help to anyone, for instance to validate a new version of the keygen?

Re: Bestec ATX-300-12Z with NO bad C36
Must have been a bad solder joint or a problem in the circuit board after all. After putting the power supply back together to do some more measuring, it suddenly started working again. I hate when that happens...

Re: Bestec ATX-300-12Z with NO bad C36
The closest matching schematic I found is attached. I've measured the caps out of circuit, and I even replaced the critical caps but that didn't change anything.
The 5VSB IC is an STR-A6351. I haven't done any measurements yet when it's plugged in (always a bit tricky to measure on the primary part I think) but I guess I have no other choice anymore...

Re: Bestec ATX-300-12Z with NO bad C36
I checked the diode, but it's ok. I even tested it by running 2 amps through it and it worked fine. As the 5VSB can't supply 1 amp, even if I don't try to power on the supply, I doubt that it's related to any of the secondary caps.
I still don't understand what's happening with the power supply

Here are a few pictures. I took quite a few bits out already, hence the different kind of solder used on some components....

Bestec ATX-300-12Z with NO bad C36
Hi,
I have a Bestec ATX-300-12Z that has what seemed "the usual problem" at first sight. When plugged in but not connected, the led (connected to 5VSB) is on. 5VSB measures okay at ~5,1 volt. As soon as I try starting the power supply (I just connect PS ON to GND) the led goes off. When I put a ~1A load on the 5VSB, the voltage drops and the led starts flashing. You'd think C36 (the 2200 uF smoothing capacitor for 5VSB) is bad. But it isn't. Neither is C50 (100 uF, 50V) or C60 (10 uF, 50V). I tested them all with an ESR meter, and even though the ESR meter showed they were fine,...

Re: 50" LG Y-sustain IPM modules
Hi,
I just received a J015B IPM I bought from Utsource; they offered the module at a low price and their handling time was short. So I'm pleased with their service.
But... I installed the new IPM on my Z_SUS board today, and although the set works again, the IPM runs very very hot. I had the set running for a few minutes, and after that the IPM was already too hot to touch. The other modules (J016B and the modules on the Y_SUS) remain cold or become slighly warm. I'm pretty sure if I leave the set on, the J015B will pop...

Re: Antec SL350P - component forensics
I think I have some leftovers from copper pipes laying around; that seems a lot easier

Re: Antec SL350P - component forensics
Thanks! This completes my shopping list. I must say the DM311 mod sounds appealing, because even if I just want to repair the supply, I'll have to replace quite a few components.
This is what's broken:
Q3 SSS4N60B
Q5 2SC945p
Q6 2SA684
C8 47 uF, 35V
ZD3 22V 500mA
D? 1N4148
R18 470R 1W
R23 180R
R22 1k
So leaving the two-transistor design and just implementing the mod may not be a lot of extra work.
I'll sleep on it

Re: Antec SL350P - component forensics
Hi everell, thanks for your reply. Attached you'll find a picture of the supply (I stripped out most of the broken components plus the heatsink).
I'm looking for the transistor on the left, and the resistor (that's already removed) next to the bulging capacitor on the right.

Antec SL350P - component forensics
Hi, I'm trying to fix an Antec SL350P that suffered from a blown 5VSB capacitor. I've identified the broken components, but there are two that are burnt beyond recognition. The first one is R18; it's a 1 watt resistor that's in parallel with that capacitor. The other component is Q6, which is located close to the two optocouplers of the main circuit. Can anyone identify those two components?
I've found the schematic with the DM311 mod, but based on pictures here on this forum, when installing this mod most of the original components (like the capacitor, diodes, transistors) are...
