  • Okay, the problem is resolved. For whatever reason the only working combination appeared to be my original bios + bios patcher and a "clean" EC dump from another site. When I flashed "clean" BIOS + "clean" EC from that site, the machine would turn on but show no picture and restart every 30-60 seconds. I got a clean set of files for BIOS and EC not trusting my work and it still would not work.

It seems only the original patched BIOS + clean EC combined brought it back to life. It first complained about security rom issue, rebooted few more times claiming...

  • HP Z2 G5 Twr BIOS password removal failure

    Hi,

The machine was/is password locked for BIOS. You can imagine I am writing here because things did not go as planned... I downloaded and edited both main bios and EC rom flash chips with 866II+ programmer using RCUnlocker for EC and BIOS patcher for BIOS. Verification goes ok for all files but now the computer is not even turning on.

When I press power on, white LED goes on but as soon as I release the power button it goes back to sleep. No beeps or other sings of life. Soldering of both chips is verified with continuity test, all is connected okay. Both chips were...

  • Re: Palit GTX 980TI working via a riser but not in x16 slot

I have physically covered all contacts after PCIE x1 lanes before inserting into the x16 slot (black electric tape over pcie finger on both sides) but will measure all pairs to be sure.

  • Palit GTX 980TI working via a riser but not in x16 slot

    Hi,

Interesting case, I have a gtx 980ti which suffered typical drmos failure. I replaced it together with 12V PEX switching transistors, all blown fuses etc. No shorts on vcore, vmem, pex or any other rails.

Yet the card does not give any sign of life when plugged into pcie x16 slot unless I plug it in via a mining riser?! I was troubleshooting it using riser as it is easier to measure etc. It worked so I assembled the card put in the computer and no post. When I move it to the riser it works again.

Checked all voltages on PCIE finger 12V, 3V3 while...

  • Re: Palit 980TI JetStream 6GB - keeps burning VRM(s) in 3d mode

Then GPU chip would be likely dead way before capacitors. Anyway have ordered 16V ones for 12V lines.

These 2.5V are 6mm or 8mm diameter? Height 8mm to 10mm will do without issues with the cooler. I mean no problem to measure but not sure how this dimension/footprint is calculated pad to pad, incl. plastic spacer or just aluminium cylinder part.

It depends if yours is still soldered or already welded due shortage, then it will not get off without careful dremeling it out pad by pad. I did not record removal being a problem, alignment of replacement is a bit trickier however.

Soldered ones I preheat the board to 90-100C and typically don't need to go to such high temperatures on air station. With pb free solder I do 375-400C depending how it goes with air speed at 5,5 , pb solder 350C usually is fine. My station is 600W 857DW+ so that may be...

Assuming 6 caps on 12V lines? Will ESR test them before replacing out of curiosity.

Low ESR 105C, will it do?

MLCCs and POSCAPs on vcore if not shorted should be good but replacing them all would anyway be a mission impossible anyway.

Thanks both for taking time to read & respond as it pushed me in the right direction as it seems.

I started again from checking VCC circuitry and looking back at everything connected to high side as this is what it is killing. Measured all PWM signals from doublers and to the controller, checked feedback pos/neg as these doublers have also power balancing built in so need to process feedback independently and drive DrMOSes on behalf of the controller.

Mind I work without schematic so...

Further digging produces no results... downloaded the original bios from the card (on the left) and compared to both versions from techpowerup. If anything bios on the card is more conservative in terms of clocks.

Power tables are identical with limits

    PCIE: 75W
    PEX6: 108W
    PEX8: 175W

    Total: 275W

6823A can handle 60A each, there are 2 for PCIE (switched with 6PIN), another 2 for PEX6 and another 4 for PEX8. That should be well within operating...

  • Palit 980TI JetStream 6GB - keeps burning VRM(s) in 3d mode

    Hello,

Purchased two GTX980ti palit jetstream to learn something about GPU repair. Both cards came in with shorts on 12V PEX 6 & 8 pin. These are old GPUs so economically not viable to invest time & energy but for sake of learning I am going with it.
There's bonus of still somewhat relevant performance and SLI if I get them to work. Have all equipment needed for the job as I do repair stuff as hobby.

Long story short I traced all the shorts and replaced faulty parts. Don't have schematics for this specific board but to an extent concepts are similar...

  • Is that real FDMF6823A?

    Fairchild DrMOS.

Left one came in from China, right one is removed from a board. Left one has almost invisble engarving looking from the top, iso does not help and you can see "shadows" of bottom pad structure on top.

Is it likely this is an original part?

I have only two sets of samples to compare but looks like it could have top layer removed and got relabelled. Resistances check ok.

    Thanks!...

  • Re: New Members - please post your introductions here

    Hi,

I am electronics enthusiast fixing stuff non-profit, hobby mainly. On top of fixing I design simple circuitry around FPGA and ESP/ARM based devices for monitoring, automation etc.

I have started long time ago and over the years worked on PSUs, (now) vintage 8/16/32 bit machines until very recently attempting to explore and learn GPUs (mainly 9XX & 10XX) being on the edge of affordable. Since that's new looking to share experiences with others who are more knowledgeable in this area.
